I ALWAYS listen to music while I'm working. I think I've actually developed a dependency on listening to muisc when I'm designing. If I'm listening to an album and it ends, I find that I'm jittery and uncomfortable until I put something else on. Does any body else experience this?

I haven't had that happen to me. I usually have my headphones on, but about 30% of the time I forget to turn my music on. Oooopy.

What?! Not around graphic design? ;) kidding...

Sometimes music helps me be creative, but there are times when I just want absolute quiet while I work. I guess it depends on the nature of the work at hand.

i used to think that musicians who painted or whatever were flakey. but then i couldn't decide what field i wanted to go into. took me years to balance music and visual art. and it's still not balanced...it's a struggle, because i'm an all or nothing personality. it's hard to do a bit of something everyday, because once i start something, that's all i want to do until the next thing. not so good for the chops or the freelancing! but i'm working on it....

I listen to music all the time when I work. I work faster with music and am much more creative when its on.....plus it helps me drowned out the constanly ringing phone at the office and the obnoxious sales people too! YAY!

I answereed always because most of the time isnt an option. I'd say 90% of the times I do but sometimes you are really in the zone and you can't be bothered with CD's or playlists distracting you. Also, I am a partly a musician too so it can be too distracting sometimes.

Music is what helps me get through the day for sure! It needs to be constant when I am designing but if I switch into programming mode I can't get anything done when there is music.

Music is great while creating, but if you get into the major right brain of mind, you will find it doesn't matter, you loose all track of time and surroundings, it's called an axel switch.

unkle carbunkle, your avatar is very funny, just goes well with most of your comments.

I can imagine meeting you with a flock of sheep on the top of a cold mountain and discussing gradient fills or fonts perhaps

Back to the question, if I have had an idea and I know it's going to take a while to do, then put on some good trance or minimal techno and it keeeps me a goin

Yikes Scoob, it's behind you!

aroo?

trance is no good for me. i need stuff that engages my brain, not 'numbs' me. whatever floats your boat, i'm not judging... sometimes i'll even just flip on the radio, but something without ads - like cbc or something. then i can tune in and out as the programming interests me.

I use iTunes on PC. I like the way the library works. I haven't used Winamp in a while. There is also a program called Foobar that is becoming quite popular.

Not to sound like everyone else, but it depends on what I am doing. If I am designing, music generally helps me stay focused. If I'm coding though, I usually cut off anything that could distract...I've tried coding with music on and it only makes me have to do more work b/c I miss mistakes and leave out necessary stuff.

I personally like Switchfoot (www.switchfoot.com (http://www.switchfoot.com)) Switchfoot andPillar (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.pillarmusic.com">www.pillarmusic.com (http://www.pillarmusic.com))right</A> now. My favorites will be different next week, but for now, these will do...

Even though I'm pretty sure your music tastes and mine differ considerably, I'll answer your query. These are the radio stations i've been know to *ahem* frequent through itunes:

www.dainbramage.com (http://www.dainbramage.com) (Alt/Modern Rock)
www.wazee.org (http://www.wazee.org) (Alt/Modern Rock) (Radio Wazee. We're playing it. I also like to pretend to be the guy that says that)
di.fm (http://di.fm) All kinds of techno (and more!) I usually kick the vocal trance station.

holliday, i tried the wazee one this morning...it lasted awhile, but then i felt all dirty and turned it off. i like the look of some of the playlist of the other one, but i'd have to have a hankering for it.

dy - i'll try that station now. haha. any music links are always WELCOME in my books. they make a nice addition TO my work day, along with THE GDF.
