Adobe Fobs Final Blow in Piracy Battle - The Dongle?
graphicdesignforum.com
July 19, 2004 - Does Adobe Systems have the answer to software piracy with something as simple as a key fob?
Under developement for only 12 days, the Adobe Dongle (http://ekoboard.com/index.html)should prove to be the strangest move Adobe has made in years - even stranger than buying out Aldus Pagemaker. Known under it's development name as the "Dongle", Adobe packs the entire Adobe CS Suite into a tiny USB-2 pen drive that can plug into a Mac or Windows System with room left over for file storage.
"I'd say this was a massive undertaking that will revolutionize the way software is released," says PiracyPrevention Director, Stephen Fobs, "But really it was only a way to get around the massive piracy issues we have with both the internet and counterfeit CD's. And it only took 12 days. We have no idea how the public will react, but so far everyone we've shown thinks it's really cool."
The product contains both Mac and Windows Adobe CS software in an encryptedproprietary ROM.
"It simply cannot be copied." Fobs says, "Each Dongle comes with it's own password string and that string is used as a key to decrypt and run the software. You could try to copy it, but it will simply be random bitsand cannot be copied or run on any other device. It's almost too simple. And it's fast."
While the development version only has 256 megabytes of additional storage, Adobe promises the production version will have a massive 5 Gigabyte RAM storage and plans to push the 20 GB barrier in future models.
Software updates, plugins and additional CS tools can be updated online, from any computer connected to the internet, through the Adobe Dongle portal which is still under development (and promises to take longer than the development of the Dongle itself).
The Dongle will come in Black, Green, Red and Purple. Release date and prices have not been set.
