I want tosave an object with transparency to PNG but Photo Paint tells me I have to combine the object with the background.
But then the picture isn't background independent anymore.

Here is an example:
www.arokh.s4.cybton.com/images/Trans.cpt (http://www.arokh.s4.cybton.com/images/Trans.cpt)
<a target="_blank" href="http://www.arokh.s4.cybton.com/images/Trans.png">www.arokh.s4.cybton.com/images/Trans. (http://www.arokh.s4.cybton.com/images/Trans.)png</A>

Is there anyway to save an PNG file with just the object and without the background?

The way I'm doing it now:
Create mask from object
Combine object with background
save to png

I don't use Corel, but in Photo Shop you can just delete the BG layer and your good. One note about PNG's: Stupid Internet Explorer does not handle Transparent BG PNG's very well. Many times it will default a grey bg around the image. Kinda ticks me off as PNG's are so cool for web graphics. Works Fine with Mozilla based browsers though.

Unfortunately it is not as simple as in photo shop,
when there is no background corel draw warns me
that the object will be combined with the background,
even when there is no background.

For the problem with IE not displaying the PNGs alpha transparency correctly,
I used a similar method like in the link described:
