This is very interesting to me. If you guys recall the gainey village ads I was working on (see attachment) the printer has had this file for 2 weeks, its going to be published in a magazine. Check out what I was emailed this morning....
As you know, (corporate name) corporate has new guidelines for this year's book. To ensure that these preferences are adhered to, our COO has been reviewing all ads.
Regarding the Gainey Village ad for (more corporate jargon) Scottsdale: I'm sure that a great deal of consideration went into the ad's color scheme, and that what you supplied is exactly what your client wants. That said, I hate asking you this--and this is not my request--but is there any way the brick color background can be removed? If not, we'll run the ad just as you supplied it.
Please let me know.
Thank you and I apologize for the request.
So lets here it you prepress people, why on earth would they ask me this....and of course im sure you can all imagine my reply. But I asked them why and they never replied back....I almost asked them if they ran out of Magenta and thats why they couldn't run the ad, but I figured it was best not to be cocky.

so, in order to make your client's ad look more in keeping with their new guidelines, they'd like you to change the ad. to look more like their book. and all the other ads.....
sounds like a good use of your client's money. you could maybe take that idea and run with it. 'designs so standard, nobody will know who you are' or 'advertise with us - we'll make sure your business stays unnoticed'. 'the new scottsdale whatever catalogue: if you need to find something - check the index, you'll never find anything any other way...'
?

WTF?
"Ran outta Magenta" That's hilarious man. I'd totally reply that.
"I am sorry. We've made repeated requests for Gainey Village to change their corporate color from "Brick" to something other than "Brick". Fiscal restraints prevent the Village from replacing all their "Brick" colored signage, banners, vehicles, buildings, fascades, benches and helium baloons. They have, however made a concession. They will allow the colour to be changed from "Brick" to "Dark Rust".
Please find the new file attatched. The magenta values of the background have been reduced by 2 percent.
We hope that is enough. If it is not, the Village of Gainley politely asks you pass on to your superiors that they would like you to fire the dip5hit who requested the change in the first place.

Yeah, sounds like horse-malarkey to me. Like the publication is cutting corners on ink or maybe they actually are trying to make all the ads similar. Either way, it's a clear case of a no-brains suit trying to make a call on something he/she obviously knows nothing about. But take another point of view... charge the extra time to the client and make some extra cash... just be VERY up-front with them as to why the price is coming out higher... let them b-tch out the publication, and let them decide if they want to run in that publication again /emoticons/smile.gif

They should've been more upfront with you for sure. What I'm wondering is why the person included he/she hates asking this and he/she is sorry for the request. It shows poorly on the emailer and the company. Weird.

This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of. so you client buys an ad in thewir magazine and now they want to dictate how the ad should be designed? Screw that! If I was the client I would pull the ad!

They ran out of Magenta - that's funny D-F
Every top-heavy corporation I've worked for has had a few quarter-witted VPs who whirl in make rediculous, know-nothing-about-it comments. Then they wander away to admire their fat paycheck and go over the offers fielded them by headhunters smaking them the next gig - 'cause they've been at the current one six months, produced nothing and are a couple of months away from being found useless by their peers who are making mind-numbing comments, checking their fat... I think you get the idea.
But that's why they do it -- because they can - and it only takes about an hour for their secretary to read the Wall Street Journal to them. After that they're free to range about the earth causing mischief!
Whew - thanks - I needed that; but don't forget D-frag - that's why they do it...
they ran out of Magenta... jajajaja

Sheesh, it's just like buying your own house and having the HOA tell you what you can and can't do to it.
By the way, D-F, your ad turned out pretty nice! Did you take that new photo yourself too? Good angle and nice colors. 8)

LOL, no prob. I've done the same thing a couple times (luckily not for a client). I've missed typos on school projects, etc before. Gotta love it when your teacher makes you look like an ass in front of a classroom full of students b/c you missed something like that. LOL
