What happens when a pantone metalic gold is printed to its CMYK process values?

I have a piece of work and the client does not want to pay for full colour plus one spot (the metalic gold).

Metallic gold is metallic because it has metal flecks in the ink. Without the spot ink you don't get a metallic. The CMYK conversion looks like baby poo. You'd be better off finding a good yellow to compliment the design.

to get that type of gold the same as metalic inks is imposible
well i would say so,
there are ways to give a gold effect using Photshop etc but it isnt the same

Ick! Yeah metalic golds look really nasty when CMYK'd. Definitely change it to a more goldlike process mix.

Thanks for that.... its what I thought. Baby poo is a good comparison PD

Capezio, my printer had a blog that talked about a suitable conversion for pantone gold. It works very well for type and small amounts, not so good if you need to go larger than a square inch or so. Unfortunately the blog is down right now so I can't give you the link, but I emailed them for you and will post you the color build once they respond.

Cyan is the key in the build.

your welcome, Like jim and buda said, cyan is the key. I'd say what I gave you is a pretty good simulation of the standard gold, less cyan would give you a brighter gold, more would be more a faded brass color.

If you want to use a metallic but want to keep prices down, see if you can do the job as 3 or 4 spots colours?

I find many 4 colour jobs (that aren't full photography) can be set up in fewer colours with some minor adjustments.

Buda, I would have done as you suggested but I'm using a 4 colour image/photo. I have used a christmassy red for the type and I just wanted to relieve it a bit. I will suggest the alternative to the gold though to my client. I'd be really interested to see the finished result.
