Another question, thanks in advance for help...

Does anyone know why it is when I try to download fonts, (on a new mac) I get a sort of error message, i.e. a red "x" saying that "serious problems were encountered" when I try to install the font in the install box in fontbook? I have the option to override and install anyway, but do not want to hurt my computer.

thanks

Catalina

Is there another font programme you can use?

For installing and activating fonts I prefer to use Extensis Suitcase.

ok thanks, i will look into that. otherwise, would the fact that my font that I am trying to download is only a font of capital letters (no number, etc.) have anything to do with it being marked as having errors? (and would therefore still be "safe" for me to install?)

Where are you downloading them from? I use Fontbook as well. I am on a new MAC and I just download and double-click. It then installs in Fontbook.

Do you get the error when you try to download the font or when you try to install it?

A good, free alternative to Fontbook is Linotype Font Explorer X. I find Fontbook somewhat cumbersome to use.

to answer your queston Sharkfin, i am having problems once I try to install it. I double click, the download box comes up, it downloads, and then when I click Install, it says that there are problems and that it may not be safe to install the font...... (?)

Can you post the link to the font?

I can check if it's the font or just your computer...

It's your fontbook. When I have no problems installing that font into my fontbook.

Try reinstalling fontbook - should be amoungst all your CDs you got with your new mac.

i dont even remember installing fontbook...i mean, it must have been included in the CDs but not a CD on its own.

i am not at my home computer but at work, so i will check later...thanks for the replies, has anyone else ever gotten this red little "x" when installing fonts.

Be careful with reinstalling system software. I was having trouble with itunes last year so I decided to trash it and reinstall it from the web. Apparently you cannot do that. itunes is hooked into the OS and in order to replace it you have to reinstall the entire system. I wish they would have warned me before I emptied the trash.

The thing that really sucks is that after reinstalling the OS I also lost the preferences for suitcase and all of the custom font sets that I had created. I would rather manually masturbate caged animals for artificial insemination than re-sort and re-classify over 4000 fonts again. Hopefully I get gloves.

My font book says the error is in the font name table. I don't know what that means. I use another font work supplied me with that has a problem with the glyph location table - it mostly works, but substitutes myriad for ™ and ©. Wish I new how to repair it.
