I have a quote (see attached) that only uses a single quote in the upper left hand corner as graphic to indicate it is a quote. The boss said there needs to be a closed quote after reviewing for grammar and errors. I know I have seen it done this way before. Does anyone have an example that I can show her? Do you think that it needs the closed quote?

I've never seen an "open" quote that didn't have to be closed.

This (http://www.itcfonts.com/Ulc/2811/SmartQuotes.htm) probably doesn't help... although it is a good article on smart quote usage.

ive never seen it unclosed, and if it wasn't it was probably not on purpose. Close the quote.

I've seen it done both ways. It depends on how you interpret that opening quote. If you think of it as a literal quotation mark, then it needs to be closed. If, on the other hand, you think of it as a graphic element signifying a quote then it doesn't.

I'd call it a matter of house style...

Why not just close the quote within the text... you don't need another big quote graphic.

I've seen it done like that before. I can't remember the company though.

In this case, it's not considered punctuation as such, but the punctuation serves as an illustration.

yeah as Hewligan/Buda said... technically it does have to be closed but these days, using the mark more for illustrative purposes and using the specific layout above, which clearly defines the end of the quote, it kind of negates the need for the closing mark because people can tell where the quote ends.

it will look better if you close the quote.
If you don't you will have people staring at it thinking something is not right here )closing quote is missing). That could be good if you really want them to study that peace of text

Close it.

Close it.

Looks more complete. Plus you've got tons of room there:

Thats not a bad suggestion if you are set on using only one large illustrative quotation mark.

Example of one I've worked on:

You can always make them different sizes.

If you are dead set on using the quotes symbolically, don't place them at the beginning. That would lead someone to expect them at the end. Maybe place them behind the text...
