I haven't used Quark Xpress for some years now. I have a question. Is it posible to save a QuarkXpress file to PDF ?

Yes.
Print to postscript then use Acrobat rather than Quark's lame pdf engine.

If you are using version 7, the internal pdf engine is a bit better (but still not perfect). It is under File>Export>Export to pdf...

Same location in 6.x
Ask your printer what he'd like you to do...

Do you have your images set for non-printing (suppress printing of images)?
How did you do the pdf? There are settings in Acrobat that will remove images over a certain size to reduce the final file size. Not sure what Quark's pdf engine may have done. I never use it.

Nope .. haven't got that option active. I made the PDF by selecting in Quark : File -> Export -> PDF

There's also a checkbox called Rough or maybe it's called something else (I've been using Quark less and less, and don't have it here at home), that will print boxes with an X whereever there are images.
