ATL (Above The Line) - Advertising/Marketing term for expensive media like T.V., Radio etc.

BTL ( Below The Line ) - Is commonly referred to print media such as direct mailers, flyers, brochures etc.

So "the line" would indicate the level of mass media exposure?

Ned

No, the "line" would indicate your belt-line. ;)

I think it has to do with where the cost of the advertising comes from...

"A colleague of mine told me that the origins of the term refer back to the balance sheet – Above the Line advertising costs are part of ‘costs of sales’ and are deducted before Gross Profit is determined; non-commission baring advertising (BTL) is part of the operating expenses and is deducted before Net Profit is determined."

Again, this is the place I found that info: http://www.marketingprofs.com/ea/qst_question.asp?qstID=401
