On the "average" items, after a while you start to just know the sizes by heart. If not, then the Wikipedia entry above that was posted works for most things.
But...if you are looking for a resource made specifically for designers, here's a great book I found a couple of years ago:
Forms, Folds and Sizes by Poppy Evans (http://www.amazon.com/Forms-Folds-Sizes-Details-Designers/dp/1592530540/sr=8-1/qid=1166117282/ref=sr_1_1/002-4797468-1008035?ie=UTF8&s=books)
There's a LOT of great stuff here and the info on the folding, etc. is awesome. I highly recommend it...well worth the $20!

Are you in the US? If so, check the post office website. If envelopes are not standard postal sizes then you might experience delays and extra charges due to the man handling that has to go into processing them since they don't fit properly into their automatic machines.
Here's a link for cards. At the bottom of the page there are more links for other types of parcel:

As far as other sizes like business cards, etc. I'd say google it up. You'll eventually learn them by heart!

I know some of them off by heart, but I've also drawn up a little card with a diagram and measurements - got them all printed and laminated and handed them out to everyone in my office. Brownie points?

Sorry, we don't use US Letter sizes in my country, so maybe it wouldn't be so useful for you guys...Similar layouts can be found in various places on the net.

Everybody knows the oddball sizes that are US-Only, such as Lettersize (8.5"x11"), Legal Size (8.5"x14") and Tabloid Size (11"x17"). It's the A Stock sizes that most people have trouble with, so your post was right on, Buda. :)
In some countries (like China), B Stock sizes are used... Not relevent for most US designers, but some American companies do their printing in China or another underdeveloped country, to save cost.
