hi my prepress peeps.

i refuse to ask anyone surrounding me, sooooo
Got this Indy file, consists of a tif, an eps logo, text in Indy
and some drop shadows. the PDF goes thru but it seems like
the something isn't getting processes when the postscript is being
made.
everything's perfect BUT my stooopid crop marks aren't showing up.

any ideas? have this happen before?

the crops are selected in my preset. it's ONLY this file...

this is prob. too vague...
thanks!

are you making your document size larger than the finished? ie - 8.5 x 11 doc to print oversized on 9.5 x 12

try copying and pasting to a new document and see what happens. I've encountered this once in a while and creating a new document seems to do the trick.

the other thing to try is restarting your machine.

yeah, tried that. no dice.

I haven't tried re-starting 'cause there's no prob. w/ any other files...
thanks!

I can't replicate the problem here. anytime my 'puter starts acting wonky, like what you're describing - restarting clears it up.

Have you tried exporting the InDy file as InDesign Interchange format, and then opening that up in InDy and exporting the PDF? Interchange format is supposed to cure certain ills that sometimes happen with InDesign files.

cool, cool,.

I'll try again in the a.m. then and see if that works...
i'll let you know!
thanks for taking a look

One other thing, are you exporting the PDF or printing to PDF? If you're exporting, you don't need to plug in a page size, but if you're printing to PDF you do. prepress_goddess's post made me think of that.

This may only be a run around, but it seems you might be getting frustrated and I got an idea. First question is what do you need the crops for? is it going to a printing company or do you need them for output where you work? Another option to get you by is take the PDF. Say for instance its an 8.5 x 11 PDF right to size, take the PDF and place it into a new Indesign doc and export it again and actually make a 2nd PDF and add the crops.... 3rd idea is what version of acrobat are you using, If im not mistaken, acrobat 7 lets you add the crops after the PDF is opened

Yes! Acrobat Pro 7 certainly does. I use it often to add crop marks and registration marks to files where people have forgotten them. If they don't appear on your file when you add them in AP7, they are on there, they just can't been seen because the page is too small to accommodate them. You will need to make your page size bigger so that they appear.

son of a biscuit!

re-starting this a.m. failed.

exporting as an interchange file failed as well.
(thanks though, that may prove useful in the future!)

making a new doc. failed.

I print a postscript. not export. these are specific specs requested by the printer, however, I'm about to try making the damn PDF by exporting to see if that makes a diff....

yes, using acrobat 7
where is the option of MAKING crops at?

yes, I have to have the damn crop marks especially for this specific ad b/c it's full page.

Grrrrr.....

thanks a lot for everyone's help. much appreciated

exporting also failed.....
I wasn't given the extensive options as you get when you print
to postscript...

going to try placing the 'cropless' PDF in a new Indy file and print again...

this is a bad week.
of course i'm swamped and these ads need to be done tomorrow...

i WILL be back on the prepress sect. for prob. 2 other 'trouble' files i can't figure out... boy, i just got knocked off my pedistal!

Open the PDF, go to Tools > Print Production > Add Printers Marks, that should allow it to do so.

Im new here, but is it possible to share the PDF and let someone try to add crops and send it back to you?

well, still interesting to know, BUT it doesn't give you the option to offset the crops! (TONS OF CHOICE WORDS SPEWING FROM FACE!)

grrrrarrr!

thanks again prepress peeps. i'm just going to place the cropless PDF in a new ID file and print....
whatever.

quick fixes are good in the sense of time-sensitivity HOWEVER, i'm not satisfied! there needs to be answers!!! i want to know WHY!!!!

thanks again guys!!

Can you bring the cropless pdf into an Indesign file and re-pdf it with cropmarks?

Okay, this is a long-shot, but is it possible that there's something corrupt in the file, like an image, that's preventing it from fully postscripting? You mentioned something about something not completing processing or something in the original post. Have you tried troubleshooting with different images turned on and off?

yeah, i'm pretty sure it was the background image causing the trouble, but unfortunately I'm so busy right now i must move on.
Thanks for the fresh 'thinker'.

Er, if it's giving you problems, why not just draw them in?

Keep the page as is, draw the lines snapping to the corners (objects or a guide) then just move the lines away 2-3mm from the page, enlarge the page then make the PDF.
