I was given a $100 gift card to Best Buy from the sales dept. I work with which floored me. Really nice.
So I offered the wife to use it for a new fridge, but they didn't have the size/color we needed. I need a new desk for my home office, but they don't have them large enough. I'd like to get some Adobe software upgrades, but Best Buy doesn't sell Creative Suite or even high quality Wacom Tablets. I'd upgrade my RAM, but I'd rather wait till next year and just replace my entire 4.5 year-old PC.
So now I'm wondering, do I just spend it on Nintendo Wii games? :)

Yes! It's good for you. See it as an investment - it may stop you from getting repetitive use work injuries :)

Or you could skip the item(s) completely buy an extended warranty, a reward zone card, or a subscription to some sports magazine....hey, someone up there at Best Buy marketing has to eat.

Don't forget the Geek Squad service agreement and the pigeon tax. :D

When you buy something from these stores and you're asked by the sales clerk "and could I have your telephone number" (note I have no question mark there because it doesn't sound like a question the way they say it) do you also reply "nope" in a matter of fact way? I'm almost offended by the way that they ask for it, like they want you to think it's needed to complete the transaction or something!?!?

Never been asked for a telephone number when making a purchase. Are you sure they're not just hitting on you? :D

Bwah ha ha! I'm pretty sure not everyone at Bestbuy has the hots for me ;)
I think it must be an american thing because I was never asked in the UK, but several stores, not just best buy ask out here and they ask in the same controlling way too, so I'm sure a lot of people must just give out their numbers.

I've done two things when asked for my number. I usually reply "Off the grid...." and they drop it. The other is if they insist, I tell them "(636) 555-1212." Back at Western Union, we used to use this number in case the customer didn't have a number, obviously substitute your own area code.
I try and limit my Best Buy shopping as much as possible due to their annoyances with purchasing something lately. To the point when I do have to go, the first words out of my mouth is "The answer to all of your questions and offers is 'no'" when I am checking out.
Someone suggested a genius shirt once (if not made already)....
"No, I don't want the warranty."
"No, I hate rewards."
"No, I don't read magazines."
"No, you can't have my phone number."

I'm already a Reward Zone member, which I never had to pay for. Go figure.

Damn it, I just went to Best Buy.com and found out they carry the Intuos Wacom Tablet 4" x 6" and they have it at my local store. I had a coupon for last weekend and could have used that and the gift card on that and replaced my dated Graphire tablet. I hear the Intuos are much better. Is there a significant upgrade in quality between Graphire and Intuos?

What do they do with your phone number? Do they call you?

"Supposedly" it's used to assist with returns, whatnot, but I wouldn't put it past BB to use it for "other purposes."

It's a tracking tool for marketing. Like CompUSA asking for zip codes.
Helps focus their target market and advertising radius.
In theory.

So, in otherwords, from now on give them a false area code... like something from Nunavut.

Or give them the phone number to Best Buy Corporate Headquarters :D

I always give them a fake number. Takes less time and aggravation than explaining that I don't want to give it and them responding that it's for marketing purposes only, and me getting pissy because I just want to keep my number completely and utterly private etc... I do give them the right area code, sometimes the right exchange #, so their marketing is ever so slightly more accurate. Not that I care or anything.
