Mythbusters recently did a huge Christmas themed Rube Goldberg Machine, http://youtube.com/watch?v=V1z7fFBrjmA

I've always thught these things were pretty cool. I plan to build one someday, anybody else ever built one? http://home.comcast.net/~rnick9/koolsmiley.gif

I never built one but I always thought they were pretty cool. I was watching a show once where they actually built medeival siege weapons like a trebuchet and a giant cross bow. I always wanted a siege weapon for unruly neighbors.

huh, I didn't know that these had a name. I helped build one in school many years ago. It was pretty neat! :)

Same here. I didn't catch all of the one last night though... No worries, it usually re-runs during the weekend.

We had this game called Mousetrap when I was a kid. Does that count?

Mousetrap was a total rube goldberg game. Heh heh, I still have the little diving guy here on my desk.

I had mousetrap too - We would always break it out on rainy days because we would forget how shitty it was. If you were playing it correctly it took forever to complete the trap, then every time you nudged the board the stupid net would always fall down. Like most board games it was fun for about 20 mins ... then we switched on the nintendo :D

When I was a kid Nintendo was not an option.

We only switched to Mousetrap after our hands had blistered up playing decathalon on the Atari 2600.

That's probably why you have such a fond memory of mousetrap. Keep it that way - never play the game again.

My mom had a similar experience with Disney world. When my parents got married they took their honeymoon in Florida. They spent a couple days in Disney World and she was impressed by the 20,000 leagues under the sea ride. We took a family vacation 15 years later and my mom could not wait to show us the greatest ride in the park. Her memory of the ride and reality were not one and the same. It looked so fake and cheesy, my mom was so disappointed. a few years later they took the ride down completely. Here are a few shots of the ride I found on a 20K fan site.

My son is in a class at his school called Science Olympiad. Instead of regular science, it's competitive science. He has to build a trebuchet and a bunch of other stuff along those lines. It's a great way for kids to learn.

There's a computer game out there called "The Incredible Machine". Basically every level you have to build a different rube goldberg machine to complete a puzzle. It's pretty fun.

I totally agree but according to my mom back in the mid seventies 20K was the end all ride. I guess it's like video games - Intellivision games that used to keep us entertained for hours as a kid hold my attention for about 5 minutes now. I wonder if advanced dungeons and dragons will hold up after all this time ...

We built a few small ones in the physics dept, just because we had access to cool stuff like liquid nitrogen and helium, but nothing that took anywhere near as many stages to complete as that one. I love the honda advert that came out a few years ago that did that...

I doubt very much that it was for real, but nice to watch anyway.

I saw a video of a genuine one that went on for about 20 minutes and it was astounding. I think it was a german bloke that set it up, but I'll have to do some searching to try and find it again as it was about 3 years ago that I saw it.
