I have responded to quite a few ads from different websites looking for freelance work etc.. and it seems that everyone I have responded to wants you to make a bunch of mockups without paying you and then they ask for revisions etc.. When I ask for a deposit and let them know that the art will have a watermark they stop responding to me etc.. I have had this happen 3 times.. Does anyone know of a genuine source for freelance work that does'nt charge? Also how do you balance.. rough drafts that can take a bit of time with NOT getting paid for them etc?

You stay well away from these sites! They sound dodgey to me.

^ exactly. No spec work.

Send out postcards advertising your services instead. It's inexpensive and will attract more "legitimate" clients.
