Hello everyone,
I'm new here (hi). I've been shopping around town (Tucson, Az)/making phone calls, but I don't seem to be getting to the bottom of much. So I thought I'd post here to see what you all think/say.
I have some graphics I'd like to turn into static cling window decals for car windows. They do have color. In size they run anywhere from 1" by 1" on up (to approximately anything that would fit a car window). So far the only company I've found that even can suggest anything says that since they outsource "static cling window decal" work, the orders have to be placed in orders of a 1000  . I didn't get a price, cuz I've yet to call the guy back (I planned on doing it after work today). However, I'm not exactly sure I'm asking the right questions or going about this in the right way. The company who told me I'd have to order them in quanities of a thousand (which seems to be a LOT to me, if anything I'd only want to start off with 100 of each design?) does have the ability to have a "charge account", and if I don't find any other solution, maybe that's the option I need to heavily consider.
However - do any of you have any suggestions, references, anything? I'd greatly appreciate it!

Question is do they have white?
We print static cling window sheets for stores and displays, but there's no white ink and the colors are translucent.
Also where are you putting them for car decals - and do they meet the regulations in your state?

where they would be placed is up the the person who buys it I guess? And I didn't even think about the white issue. And also - where would I even find out the AZ state laws of window decals? I mean they'd just be similar to those that are in target, only funner, and better designed??
I'm pretty sure I can design them without white. So far, all the ones I've come up with are colored (no white) on a transparent background and only "silhouette" type image that is black.
By translucent I'm assuming you mean they're still colored only semi see through, correct?
Thanks for your help!

Most states have DOT (department of transpertation regulation book - might even try online. Some cities have stricter code so you might want to check with your local police to direct you where to get that information.
I used to have a custom car - strange rules would appear.
Distance between wheelwell and tire. Height of car from road. What percentages of tint is allowed. how much window space (percentages) is allowed to be covered. What time of day headlight covers where allowed. How bright aftermarket lights and fog lights/running lights were allowed.
I finally told one officer - the fith one to pull me over in a week after I painted my car - to not worry about me as I'm just an artist enjoying her ride in a custom car. Suprisingly they did leave me alone after that. heh.
And yes, translucent means semi - see through.

ok. well what about this. now that you brought up the legal issue, i was writing an email to the azdotgov thing regarding the matter and i thought about this.... lol
if i'm to sell them online, i can't really control to which state they go to. SO - since they're generally small, average decals, do you think it's safe to say what I should do is place a disclaimer on the site saying that we are not to be held liable for the sate laws. I mean I'm not thinking of designing something that would take up the whole window. I mean my boyfriend has a window decal that goes across the entire bottom front window that is a link to a forum he goes to for his car (www.gnttype.org (http://www.gnttype.org) or something) and he's not gotten any comments or been pulled over, and I mean the thing is pretty big. I'm not thinking anything THAT big...

If you can find a sign vendor who does his own (usually) solvent prints onto window cling material you are golden on the small quantities. I sure there is a material now that you can image to that is white but I'm also pretty sure it has to go with the white against the glass, not the image. And you don't want the cling on the outside of your car. ;)
If you want white ink though you have to go to a real press where they want the runs in 1000's. I do window cling once in a while. Hate it. The colors are so washed out, the blacks aren't true, blech.
Doesn't car heat in summer melt them off the windows?
Have you considered thermal or ecosol prints on clear adhesive vinyl? Again, a sign shop with a printer/plotter or an Edge machine could help you out with small runs.
There are state rules about art on the front window not exceeding a certain letter or box height.

hey - thanks for the help print driver.
one question - how do i find them?!?! and what exactly is the difference between thermal or ecosol prints on clear adhesive vinyl? ha ha im so sorry but i have NO idea about any of this stuff, so any info is helpful.
what i'm looking for is simply something that is similar to those window decals you can find in target/wal-mart. Or even those kinds of stickers for different universities and such. That's the kind of thing I had in mind.

Hi welcome to the GDF, im in PHX and I can tell you that you dont have to order in quantities of 1000. My old shop used to do runs of anything from 50-1000 and even smaller orders. I know of shops in town here that can do this for you quite simply. I would recommend Digital Color Graphics, and Imagecraft. Both can be found on qwest dex. You might even be able to find a courier to drop them off for you, or make a trip up here on a weekend. Good luck, pm me if you have any questions.
