I work hard on what I do but people won't employ me as I haven't got a degree, just lots of self taught usefulness, but hey what would I know, come on guys, wake up a bit and let people prove themselves, just once

It's not always about the designer. I'm an advertising designer with a degree, and my portfolio and contest entry stuff is great (so I've been told) however the ads I create for people are solely what the client wants, and sometimes they are ugly, and I can't convince them to do otherwise.

My boyfriend doesn't have a degree either, and he was hired quite easily, and it was based on his ability to communicate and mesh with the team.

'To Design is much more than simply to assemble, to order, or even to edit; it is to add value and meaning, to illuminate, to simplify, to clarify, to modify, to dignify, to dramatize, to persuade, and perhaps even to amuse.' --Paul Rand

It is just a myth that you need a degree I just got hired by a large company and all they wanted was someone that they could get along with and could do the work required.

I've been struggling for years to get a good job and one day I just got lucky. Looking back it was such a waste of time to worry about degrees and experience If you feel good about your work and experience others will and then you will get a job you like.

give the clients what he wants and they will be happy and come back for more. BELIEVE me on this one folks, you can be the best designer in the wrld, but don't give them what they want, then you lost em. If they are willing to pay I will make sure they get EXACTLY what they request, i have done a lot of 'ugly' work, but the client loved it and they have come back to me (just me) for over 5 years. As a matter of fact that particular client will be by tomorrow to discuss some new things they want over Sunday lunch. Gotta get them food endorphins working so i can get more money (LOL).

Why not get started on a degree--at least you can say you are working towards one. Classes *will* make you a better, more rounded out designer and you do need a degree for the best paying jobs most of the time.

I am sure I will feel some hate for this, but I won't interview anyone without at least an Associates Degree, because I know they have learned a lot of things in school besides how to run Quark. Yes, you need to be a good designer, but you also may need to know how to write, how to give a speech to the board of directors, or how to meet deadlines. I also know that a designer that has been in school has learned how to take a critique without freaking out :-)

So yes, you MAY be able to get a job in this field without a degree, but you will get a BETTER one (and more interviews) if you have one.
