So you present a customer with a set of ideas...for my work place its a set of 6 ideas...I include what her "vision" of the project is too. Some ideas are good, some are bad...this goes into revisions...i take time on the good ideas and kind of leave the bad idea alone, just let it join the group of concepts as an outcast...

She focuses in on that black sheep....She has my revise it...and revise it...then simplify it back to what it first was....ARGH GO WITH SOMETHING NICE, YOUR TRYING TO BUILD A CORP. IDENTITY

Doesn't matter what letters follow or preceed your name, nor the acclaim your skills have garnered - your credentials mean nothing to them, after all, their niece can use crayons(R).

They will always choose the napkin with the cat puke on it that they brought in. Remember, you are their interface into a realm which intrigues and threatens them, and they spend much of their 'Walter Mitty' time wishing they were you...

Their alternative? To control you... to dominate and instruct you...

whats worse is Its template design, so I need to work with predetermined designs, and place my own touch on each project, I have freedom of type placement and such, but I cant create vectors or do fancy type effects, the only thing i can do to photos is crop them.

She choose the Most OVER used template too!

Thats ok, this is the beginning of my career...i can also be truly creative on my own time...Thank god for freelance

Aargh. Templates. Sorry Dro. Don't take this as a dump on you.

I was just reading today in POP Design how FastSigns is starting a large format line, all using templates and weblinks where clients can just walk in off the street and get 60' goods done in days (can't imagine the print or color quality). I never quite understood the concept. Hmm...'I want my graphic to stand out at a trade show so I'll choose this template.' So wrong. They go in, the 'designer' 'pushes a few buttons' and they come back tomorrow for their prints. See, anyone can do it.

The more that concept proliferates, the harder it will be for you designers to justify your jobs. And the more crap we get to see on the walls. Maybe this is what Stickwood is complaining about.

Or maybe it will help. Who knows. After seeing masses of crap maybe people will swing back to getting original work done.

PrintDriver thats why I'm not worried. You have print houses doing 4/4 Full color business cards for $39.99 1,000 of them. But guess what the templates suck so bad it's not even funny. Wow talk about crap!

But yea they are shinny and you competitor picked a better font so how does your client know the diffrence, in walks Benjo and charges 2x times that price for artwork alone and wala all your peers are evious. Yup no worries from this side of the fence.

Yeah but only WE know they are crap! Just like salespeople and - I'm gonna say it DZ, cover your eyes - and their STARBURSTS.
THEY love em!
And is that what really matters?
Does the client know I bust my hump to get colors right?
Do I know if a client would accept colors that are slightly off?
My clients don't and I guess I should feel lucky they aren't off at FastSigns getting their museum exhibits printed.
They still expect FastSigns pricing though, and don't get it that it costs more for custom work.

Sorry, this thread and the article I was reading today just set my teeth on edge for some reason. Guess it's because we are so NOT busy at the moment. Feast or Famine.

they allow you to upload your own designs at VP as well, I;ll use that as a freelance resource, but anyway I think they find people are wanting more personal touches, hence the hiring of designers to play with, tweak, or completely break down the template.

just understand pd this is only the beginning of my career as well, a couple years, then moving on up!
i'll be freelancing to keep meself sharp, maybe some classes as well

I know Drorain. That's why I said not to take it personally.
You made a good decision to take the job you have and I know you'll do well.

It's just this cookie-cutter want-it-NOW attitude that people have. Driving me insane.

My clients always think they know more than I do...bastids...
