Gill Sans or Futura?

urstwile

Umm, meaning which do I like better? Gill Sans, definitely. Although Futura has its uses as well.

Yup, you got it Urst.

Can you tell I'm a wee bit bored?

Must be rough trying to play with GDF on a Sunday when it's Monday for you. :)

urstwile

Oooh, Futura got a vote!

budafist
01-07-2007, 10:16 PM
I reckon...

Though it gets busier during the week while I'm at work - which is afterhours for others.

urstwile

What is the time difference, anyway? I've been meaning to look it up. Say from PST to your time?

budafist
01-07-2007, 10:33 PM
Well, what time is it where you are Urst? It's 11.20am on Monday morning here.

urstwile
01-07-2007, 10:34 PM
2:30 p.m. here, on Sunday. So 21 hours?

budafist
01-07-2007, 10:36 PM
So is that 21 hours difference? or am I just hopelessly bad at maths?

or both of us!

urstwile
01-07-2007, 10:40 PM
I'm pretty sure it's 21. Unless someone steps up to correct us!

And now, back to the font war!

21 it is ;)

I actually like them both .. but if I had to choose I guess I would go with Gill

I'd definitely go for Futura.

Of course, that may have something to do with the fact that Gill Sans is the standard font for everything at the university I work for. Some days just the sight of it makes me want to kill...

Hewligan, I got into Gill Sans because of Uni! Weird huh?

hewligan
01-08-2007, 04:15 AM
Heh. That is kinda funny :D

Still, at the end of the day, I've always had a soft spot for the geometrical sans serifs, and would probably have picked Futura anyway.

Plus, it's such a great name. Really sums up the font. And I've often had good experiences from picking fonts because I like their names :)

Futura...for me!

Thanks, gra-ph!c-D'sig-nah - I was beginning to feel lonely in the Futura camp :D

I'm a Futura fan hands down.

Also

hewligan....I apologize for my name length here in this forum. i appreciate you typing the whole thing out! but you can shorten it to "gra-ph!c"....

Well, thanks, but to be honest I didn't type it - I just copied and pasted ;)

Gill Sans by all means! As much as I like Futura, Gill Sans is one of the only Sans-Serif faces that has the legibility and readability of a Serif typeface. Although I will say that Gill is heavily misused. Even though it's a very neutral face, I see it on a lot of flyers and such. I think Gill Sans MT comes installed on most PCs.

I see Gill Sans everywhere these days, but I don't think it is misused. It's quite plain but with a personality still that can suit many situations....unlike other overused fonts.

Yes, that is true.

I'm a firm believer in never doing anything myself when the computer will do it for me :)

That's an especially important rule when you realise that, while I have a very low boredom threshold, if the computer will do something once, it will happily do it a million times - while I wander off for a coffee and a cigarette.

Now if only the computer would make a decent coffee, too, I'd be set :D

Futura, and only because Gill Sans is the biggest PITA to rip out of all the
standard fonts clients use in submissions here. Gill Sans used in
Quark 6.x documents makes me want to go postal.

budafist

Excuse my ignorance, but what is PITA? It's bread to me, but I don't think that is what you mean.

I have a question, when "you" are reading (just to yourself) things like PITA and LOL etc. do you say the whole phrase, or just say peeta and lole, or does it vary from word/phrase to word/phrase?
I would say that I say the word and not the phrase about 90% of the time, unless I just learned it, or it's impossible to say/think.
Oh and Gill Sans is a better font, but I try to stay away from both. Goudy sans wasn't an option, damn!
My real vote for body text is impact though.

budafist
01-08-2007, 08:39 PM
For easy ones like LOL I think lole. But it's funny coz I have a friend that used to say lole in conversation instead of actually laughing.

Ones that I don't see every day I have to translate to myself to ensure I'm thinking the right words.

*goes to look up goudy sans....Are you serious about impact? It is not a appealing font in my world.

DesignerScott
01-08-2007, 08:46 PM
IMPACT IS DA BOMB. IT REALLY MAKES SURE EVERY WORD STANDS OUT SO CLEARLY AS BEING TOTAL CRAP!
In conversation, I say "Bee Tee Double You" all the time, and get tons of blank stares.

Gill Sans

I've always been partial to the number set in Gill Sans.

I read pita, as in the bread, and I have to struggle not to say "pita" when
talking sometimes about things that pain me. LOL I read as individual letters.

I may have voted wrong. I like Gill Sans better than Futura, I just think Futura has broader uses. Oh well. It's not like Gill Sans will be executed and banned from future use because it lost this poll by my one vote.

Or will it?

Hey Virgo, I was going to vote for Futura so I'll vote for Gill SAns and all will be right with this poll again.

lole. ;)

DesignerScott

double-you tee eff? I demand a recount, and let's find Tom Green so we can hang "The Chad" once and for all! Maybe then we can pull the troops out.

Gotta say I love them both, but Futura wins out because its such a good headline font, but Gill Sans is great for setting long blocks of text. I love Condensed sets of Futura though,

Impact is a totally underrated typeface, scott booo!!
