Horizontal & Vert text???

A question please...as an on going disagreement in our studio about this problem.

Text - when is it RIGHT to stack words like this

(i think this is wrong!!)

for the purpose of a spine, or anything else?
should text when needed to be vertical - should be turned 90° clockwise or -90°?? any answer would be great. please end this stupid disagreement!...ha

Myself I think is wrong, what does everyone else think?

Book spines are usually turned 90 clockwise. Or written stacked horizontally if the spine is wide enough.
Stacked like you show just never looks right. Even if the letters are broken into point text and stacked on center. yech.

-90° clockwise, imho. unless you're making a cool, kitchy neon sign for outside a casino or 1940's diner...

re. the 90° vs. -90°: people read down, not up.

Guess it all depends on what your program thinks is -90. I use 2 progies that are completely opposite. Don't ask me why.
90 degrees in the clockwise direction is reading down.

mmmm...been playing with book spines all day in illustrator and photoshop: -90°. but we all knew what we all meant, right? :)

Yeah we all know what we meant.
Might be a version thing too.
PSCS +90 turns to read down. Or Rotate Canvas 90 Clockwise.
AICS -90 to read down.
