So they want me to design a new company polo-shirt with the logo of our software and our e-commerce package, and it will be embroidered. I ask what format it is needed in for the off site embroider-er, and was told that it was 'EXP'.
I've never heard of it, and everywhere I look it appears to be an extension for 'exported' . I don't have contact with the individual unfortunately so I can't get a hold of them. Anybody have any ideas?

Never heard of it but I found this: http://filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=EXP&Search=Search (http://filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=EXP&Search=Search)
Probably doesn't help, sorry?!

I found this http://www.embroideryresource.com/html/freedesigns.html
Check out the "free download" box and you'll see a file .exp. I think these extentions are for the type of machines that do the sewing.
I'll bet it's some kind of embroidery software file. Those machines use computer files to do the embroidery.
EDIT: written while above post was being posted :D

That's good info to know... thanks for the link jim.

Yeah jim, you're right. I did a bit more searching on it and it does seem that those are the file types those machines read. How to get it in that format is my next step.
Searching the web for answers has led me down HTML-Hell, I will say that much. These sites wouldn't have looked good in 1996. Thankfully (only because I'm at work) it isn't the "xxx" embroidery format, I'm sure I'd be led to some other sites via google searching.

Maybe Corel Draw (yak) has these extentions. :p

Looks like the GUI-deficient shareware program 'Quick Stitch' will do this. $40 to export as an EXP to whatever size I want. Hopefully the shareware is enough to get what I need out of this.
EPS and JPG are "unknown file format"s for importing. This ought to be fun.
I bet they could take an EPS. There's no way they could expect everybody who wants a shirt embroidered to have this software.

My thoughts exactly. I've been looking around and I saw another program that can export to this format as $169 (was $349 :D ). They have to have something like this on hand that they can do themselves. EPS it is.

That's what I've always sent... EPS, but I guess every place does things a little different.

The embroiderer I work with takes an EPS and converts it using the software the embroidery machine works off.

yeah, the EXP file is what is called a "stitch file" just send them the eps and they convert it for you... if they don't have that capability you should be getting your shirts made elsewhere

I had this same thing a while back also for embroidery. It ended up being cheaper to just send them the eps and have them convert it, than to find a way to do it myself.

I sent an EPS and an Illustrator PDF just in case (I'm on Illy 8 and EPS's tend to be wonky for some reason), and evidently they said those will work.
So now I know whan an EXP is.
