I think Design in it's simplest form is the arrangement of elements.
Graphic Design, as most of us use it, is the arrangement of elements to effectivly communicate a message to an audience.

Design is a very subjective form of art. There are accepted norms of what good is in different elements of design and this evolves overtime. What is good design for business to business web design is not what is good for eastern european interior design etc.

The balance of art and functionality to transmit a message.
Design is about connections and relationships. Not form. Not function. Design is the relationship of form to function. Not communicating at users, but testing users to verify what was communicated. Design is the emergent surplus beyond the simple sum of component parts. Design is the negotiation of consumer desires and business constraints.

That music video is rad. Move over Kate Wolf, hippy folk guitar is at a whole new level.

It really is a brilliantly executed promotion. I smell awards... big awards. At least an inch bigger than everyone else's.

I saw a magazine advert several months ago that must have been for this product that made me giggle. It was very simple with just two kiwi fruit in the center of the page, one of which had been shaved with all the fluff/hair lying on the ground around it and the text just said something like "shave whatever you want". Nice!

Yeah, being at the site actually made me think about buying the thing. Thats good. I'm not one to be swayed by advertising but that song made a lasting impression.
Has anyone seen the Geico, "So Easy a Caveman Can Do It" commercials? I think they are hilarious, The whole theme has evolved into a continuing story, and I can't wait to see what they do next with it.

Using a variety of elements to best communicate an idea, product or service. Type, imagery and layout can all be included with this and should be considered both individually and as a collective piece. Design can convey information or emotion, depending on what the creative need is. Some people feel that they are the ‘l33t’ designer that everyone will love since they simply know how to apply a grunge brush or stack images and adjust transparencies. If it doesn’t convey purpose then it’s not design, but rather just art. Going out into the world, researching, gathering, developing and execution…this to me is design.
Doesn’t need to be 1000 thumbnails either, but it shouldn’t always be your first idea. I believe what matters is the quality of the research and what you output.
Yup, that’s what I think, but I may have my head up my ass too

Unless you are in the museum exhibit business, then it's all about form and function. The function is teaching, not selling. The form is how you go about the function - whether it's simple graphic, graphic and artifact, computer interactive, or mechanical interactive.
There are other avenues of design beyond consumer desires and business constraints.

Design = Making things pretty
That seems to be the only way I get my family to understand what I do and I've been doing it for over 30 years now.
