Yes-- use MS Publisher.

Failing that, nope-- not really. You can ask the person who sent you the file to either make a PDF or an EPS file out of it, OR.... ask them to cut and paste from Publish into an open MS Word page and send you the Word file. That's often your best bet.

I was just going to post the same question yesterday. I can't seem to find any other way to open the .pub file that I just received either. Although Adobe says you can open a .pub file in Pagemaker 7.0 and then save as a pagemaker file and import into InDesign. Lot of good that does me, Since I use InDesign, so I have pagemaker . I am not sure what version of publisher files that will work with though.

I've never heard that one, or seen it work. Good luck, but I think you need to
get the application, or befriend a person that has it.

there are a couple file converters online that will put into a pdf format for you. You'll need to retype all the copy afterwards though, each letter is assigned to an individual point.

I'll post a good pdf conv at home, or you can google it.

The PageMaker PUB converter was first introduced way back in PageMaker 6, I think. And even then, it was obsolete as it only worked (and I use that term loosely) for the earliest version of Publisher. I really doubt if Adobe has invested anything in updating that import filter for PM7, so I wouldn't hold my breath. Somebody prove me wrong, please.

Publisher has something like a 'package for commercial printing' command but it's about as useful and reliable as the rest of the package (including the PDF export). Sometimes I have been able to coax an EPS or postscript file that I can open or use, but it's the inconsistency of it all that drove me nuts. If you do have Publisher on your system though you can copy and paste directly into AI or CorelDraw. Or, as I already mentioned--into MS Word. At least most of it. And when you weigh explaining to a client how to copy paste from Pub to Word vs. how to get a good PDF or PS file from the same... most of the time I would stick to the Word route.

i had to ask a friend to convert it to PDF and then use that as a base for my design. I have Publisher at home but will not install it on my machine as it doesn't belong.

Postscripting a Pub file is really pretty easy.
You just have to get past that UUGGGHHH Publisher feeling.
Once it's postscripted and pdf'd, it's just like any other file.

You're a good man, Mynock.
I'll remember you in my will:

To my good friend Mynock (even tho he likes the Bears):
I leave all copies and owner rights to Publisher 2000-2050.
Microsoft is your friend!

Bears, I meant Golden Gophers. My mistake.
At least you got rid of Monson as coach. Just don't send him back!

Ok, this is a bit off topic, but I thought it was funny enough to post.
Go to www.google.com and type "microsoft publisher sucks"

Check out the 2nd post.

Heh, I just converted a 120 page catalog that was done in MS publisher to an editable pdf. A easy couple hours yesterday.

I downloaded the MS Publisher trial version. Then I opened up the files and "print to Adobe PDF". Just make sure that when you "print" that the setting is High Print Quality. The files are then able to be opened in Illustrator and edited.

Client was completely happy that the files he got from his previous person were recoverable.

The better question might be "How Do I Rip Apart Someone Who Sends A Publisher File?", in which I would have many possible (and creative!) solutions.

Oh yeah, go Bears.

Unfortunately you're outta luck.

If a client sends us a dicky Publisher file, we ask them to send a PDF. And they usually do that with no probs.
Failing that, ask them to supply all photos electronically, and copy all the text out into Word if you were planning on redo'ing the job anyway.

Oh yeah, make sure with Publisher files, you ALWAYS get a printed copy from their machine to check against. As a lot of things change when you take that file from PC to another PC. Things such as WordArt that they've used, Publisher will never tell you what font was used... handy.

I'm not sure how you'll go with the copy/paste option. I've found with the Publisher 2002, it will only copy a really grainy 'preview' image, which is annoying.

Thankfully we don't get as many Publisher files anymore. I do get one or two newsletters in Publisher every few months.
Kinda like an annoying bill that you know is coming up and have to deal with it.
