We're working on some flyers for a local upmarket sushi bar/restaurant for their music nights.

My other half will be doing manga like illustrations/caricatures of the DJs in plenty of detail while I will lay up the text and composition.

I was thinking that I could lay it up a bit like an old film poster but haven't found anything online that is inspirational.

When you think of Japanese graphic design, what pieces come to mind?

Anime, Godzilla...I know, those are lame. You might try looking at the art of Katsushika Hokusai or Kiyotada, although these are artists from the 18th cen. (I think) they were quite influential in classical japanese art. As far as modern japanese graphic design, much of what I've seen (via internet, etc...) seems to have no connection (unfortunately) with the early roots of japanese art. My sister lives in Japan, I'll call her and see if she has any ideas.

Oh yeah, I love Katsushika Hokusai. His wave pieces is one of my favourites.

I'll look up the other guy though. Thanks Brie :)
