I like this line on the home page of 1001fonts:
In case you are looking for professional high quality fonts, you may want to visit Linotype.com, Fonts.com, MyFonts.com or ITCFonts.com.
And apparently they are not all 'free'.
Although all fonts can be downloaded for free on this website, certain usage restrictions may apply in respect to the different font licenses. Please make sure you comply with a font's license when using it.
Again, all I can say about free fonts is sometimes you truly get what you pay for. Be sure the ones you select will rip before committing a project to them.

I also find that some free fonts have some crazy ligatures on it. Once I had a font that all instances "qu" was replaced by a $ sign. It drove me nuts until I realised I had to untick the ligatures box in Indesign.
Be sure to proof read extra careful just in case - or you could just turn of ligatures.

Some free fonts also don't include certain characters, like vowels. Those are kinda important.
