Hi everyone

Simply, I'm attempting to produce a PDF from Quark to show the client different layout options on a page. I need it to be compressed to as small a file size as possible (the quality of image isn't an issue).

Now when exporting I go into Options and am presented with a series of compression options:

Compression: of the myriad options which is the one which wil produce the smallest file size?

What is the difference between Downsampling and Subsampling images?
Which will produce the lowest file size?

Are there any other tips that will ensure a low file size?

Thanks very much in advance

Carl

Rather than exporting, I'd recommend that you print it to PDF instead. That way you can access the Smallest File Size PDF preset.

In addition, sometimes exporting to PDF out of Quark can be iffy in terms of results. Printing to PDF instead (provided you have Adobe PDF set up as a printer) is more reliable.

It would be helpful if you provided your operating system version and version of Quark, and the platform on which you're working (PC or Mac).

And whether you have Distiller...

Yes, good point, PD.

Yeah, I'm running Mac OSX Tiger 10.4.3, using Quark 6 and often have to use Distiller due to Quark's comprehensive inadequacy with fonts.

But thanks for the advice;)

Kind regards

Yeah, fonts and Quark = poo.

It seems that the print to PDF is more reliable. Since you have Distiller, you should be able to set up an Adobe PDF printer in Tiger.

I distrust Quark's pdf engine so much I print to Postscript then Distill. You can access "Smallest File Size" there too and it gets pretty darn small. I wouldn't use it to proof images except for placement.
