My GD professor has given us an assignment to design a editorial spread for a real magazine. The one I've chosen is Rolling Stone. We're supposed to use the same measurements as the real magazine. I'm wondering, what are the margins? Rolling Stone has a border on all pages and I thought that the margin would be from edge of page to border but when I do that in Quark, it puts the columns at those measurements which would mean I would have to put the border in the colomns, which I would think would make text work a bit troublesome. I thought it'd be easier to make the margins be where the actual text begins, then I could put the border outside the columns. I want to do it the right way though. Any help or ideas?

p.s. People will probably say ask teacher but he's out of town this week and leaving us to work alone

I think what your looking to find is the terms Live, Trim, and Bleed sizes. I'd look on thier website under advertising and see what their print specs are for a full page ad, then set two facing pages up in quark for your spread.

Another way to go is to cut that page out, scan it, and place it into quark. Lay some guides over it and see where it takes you.

I personally would have the margins up to where the text begins and leave the border outside it. The text is more important; the border is ornamental. It will make it easier if you have to add more pages.

I think that's what I'm going to do. That will make it so the border doesn't interfere with columns.

I'm just wondering though, does the stuff "outside of margins" still print? I'm guessing it does.

Yes, elements in the margins do print. What doesn't print is the excess bleed off the edges of the page.

I have another quick questtion and no sense in starting new thread for it.

I saw that quarkxpress has a evaluation version to download. I thought it'd be nice to DL it and work on the project at home some. Only problem is, I have a PC and the computers at school are MAC. Will I be able to transfer a Quark 7 file from a PC to a MAC that has (I think) Quark version 6. I understand that pictures and fonts would probably have some troubles but what about just the basic text/picture boxes.

Thanks again :D

I haven't used Quark 7 at all, but I do use Quark 6 on both platforms and have had reasonable success (the issues I have had have been font-related). Remember to save down to version 6, and read the fine print regarding the evaluation software - some options may not be available, including important stuff like saving or printing.

edit: Just checked out Quark's site, the evaluation software is fully funtional, so nevermind my last comment....
