So, I needed to pick up some sweet and sour mix yesterday and I go to the non-alcoholic section of the liquor store and I am taken back by the selection of mojito mix, and the mojito glass rimmer mojito mojito mojito! (its fun to say)

Anyway, Im just very taken back by the recent explosion of its poopularity... and I have to give the credit to Bacardi with their advertisements and their portrayal of it being such a classy drink. Is this just here? Or has the mojito exploded all over the US? the world? Do you drink Mojitos? If so, did you a year ago?

i'm more the bourbon and coke kind of guy, though my sister likes bacardi and coke (you see the pattern forming here...)

you know, i'm ashamed to say i haven't ever had a mojito, but i like the word cuz it's close to "mojo"... :)

Mojito's exploded out of the castro district in SF.

Too fruity for my tastes. (yeah, that has a dual meaning).

they have really been pushing the advertising, thats for sure!
i see 2 of their billboards on the way to work. and word of mouth seems to have really helped, cause thats all i hear about...mojito!

i don't really like the drink anymore than i have in the past though...

It's funny how popular Mojitos have gotten, especially when you consider that they've been around for centuries. I certainly do like Bacardi though... I am Puerto Rican, it's kinda a requirement. ;)

Some trivia for you guys. Desi Arnez (Dezi Lu Productions , I love Lucy) was a member of the family that started Bacardi in Cuba. How he fits in the whole scheme of the business I'm not sure but his family in Cuba was very wealthy.

Used to drink Mojitos a lot in Miami about 20 years ago. Now they are the only reason we grow fresh mint in our garden. No pre-made mixes here - my partner makes them all from scratch. Of course, he took a killer bartending class a few years ago for fun.

Mojitos popped up with the trendy crowd about five years ago here in Cali. When I started seeing advertisements last year, I laughed. Oh great, here's the next Red Bull/vodka, I thought...

They're alright. I'd had more than my fair share of mojitos (of almost every variety you can think of), but I mainly stick to drinks that kick me in the ass a little more (I like various alcohol on the rocks or straight up in water).

I am unfortunately confined to Long Islands (sans tequila) and Any Vodka! Anything else and the smell alone is instant vomitification for me.
As a side note, here in Kansas it is against law for liquor stores to sell anything non-alcoholic. Even ice. So when you need any mixers or something obscure like Tom & Jerry Batter (which is only good non-alcoholic, but only carried by liquor stores) we have to drive to certain counties of Missouri, or hope the grocery store carries the mixer of choice.
I guess Kansas only wants to promote drinking your liquor undistilled. So much for being a bunch of prudes eh?

Mojitos are big in my circle of friends. Some of you might remember that I had a mojito bbq for my birthday last year. I've been drinking them since my bf became a bartender about 3 years ago.

The mojitos we make do kick you in the ass...it's half a glass of spirits, some sugar, mint and a squeeze of lime. No soda or nothing for us :D

Being as new as I am (2 days) ...sounds like I am going to fit right in!

So where are we meeting after work tomorrow?

That looks like a real funky Mojito up above - I am a little more familiar with the golden brown bottom, clear middle, and the mint leaves on the top. That is the traditional way - right? Seen a lot of promotion in the Northeast the last year or so - we're always a little behind the jet-strem!

Tequila - blue aguave - sipping glass - no shots - no lime - unless we move to the Mexican Flag, the Slammers, and the Flaming Cockroach!

That's pretty nuts. Our liquor stores sell everything. Snacks, mixers, cigerettes, shakers, glasses everything you need for a well rounded drinking experience.

Oh it's hit the northeast. A chain steakhouse I used to work for added Mojitos to their alcoholic repertoire (this chain is mostly in NJ, a few in NY, LI & PA). They have the habit of jumping on whatever trend they can (they started making their own mini-burgers soon after Ruby Tuesday's started advertising theirs).

Speaking of weird liquor store laws, PA has drive through liquor stores. And I think there are a couple of states where all liquor stores are owned by the state.

This actually makes sense to me. This way only people old-enough to buy liquor should be entering package stores. No reason for impressionable kids to be going in. Puts liquor stores on par with adult video stores. :(

Here in Virginia the state owns the liquor stores, they're called ABC stores. Just across the river in Maryland, liquor stores are privately owned and plenty have drive throughs. One exception about Maryland is, I believe, the only county in the U.S. that owns its own liquor stores. Privately owned stores are forbidden. The county also makes and labels its own liquor called "Montgomery County whiskey" vodka etc.

Mojitos. I love them when made properly. Most places (restaurants don't do them that great) I like to prepare them myself with fresh Mint from outback. I make them pitchers at a time and have them at summer/spring parties alongside pitchers of sangria.

oh, and in Maryland, you cannot buy alcohol in grocery stores but nothing too odd other than that.

I like Mojitos because they are a nice refreshing drinkn on a hot day. and can be made to match your taste...i don't thinkn mine are too sweet, more like a limeade with mint and rum.

There was a time in Maryland back in the 70s the State allowed beer and wine to be sold in 7-11s. At least in Prince Georges County. I think it only lasted 2 years top then it was banned. You can buy beer and wine in 7-11s and grocery stores here in Virginia.

If you've ever gotten bad service and negative vibed after ordering a mojito, its because most bartenders hate making them (a real one, not from mix) Especially if you order more than 1, and you order more than 1 round. What's all this talk about 7-11s - not sure if there are any left here! Haven't seen one in 10 years or more! We just took a vote, last time around, to see if "wine" only could be sold at grocery stores - kinda break up the monopoly of the lil' package stores every 20 or so feet. The voter's downed it and the little guys won!

...and when we all meet together, I'll make good!
Reminds me of a new hire we had at work. One year we told him that the new hire had to set up the holiday tree in the office - get it from storage, assembly, lights, ornaments - the whole bit. Once it was completed we moved it to the boss' office - it completely took up the space and he had to take it apart just to get in behind the desk the next morning! The noob was a little red faced and we had instructed him that the job was his every season from that day forward - until a new hire took his LOW spot in the rank. Funny thing is - he did it for three more years before he realized there was no such ritual!

...I bought the drinks then too

Mango Margarita

- 2 oz Tequila
- 3/4 oz Grand Marnier
- 1 oz Fresh Mango Nectar
- 3/4 oz Fresh Lime Juice

I like to puree it in a blender with ice and make nice frozen margarita ... ya know once you drink enough of them... you don't feel the brain freeze :D

Oh yeah, they take ages to make, so don't order it when the bar is busy! I was lucky that I was the bartender's girlfriend and I hung out at the bar during the week. That was fun times. A cocktail or two while I did my homework at the bar. It mades homework more fun for sure :D

Though it's not a good idea just to order 1. Better to order 2 at a time. They can fit 2 drinks in a shaker easy.

I still don't get it! To me that would be like passing a law that says that popcorn can't be sold in adult video stores.
I mean, every other state that I've lived in, it doesn't matter if they sell ice or not, if you're not 21 you can't be in there. I even got carded for just buying ice at a liquor store before. It seems to me that the state should encourage watering down the booze.
In certain counties of Missouri I'm told that they can't sell cold beer, as a method of preventing drunk driving. (to keep people from opening that six-pack as soon as they get it) That seems like a smart, but still PITA law.

It's always funny to watch someone who is in New Jersey for the first time try to find the beer or wine in the supermarket or convenience store. Heh heh.

It's also funny to watch them try to pump their own gas and get hollered at by the station attendants to stop.

But then again, New Jersey is a pretty strange place.

You can't pump you own gas here in Oregon either.

On the alcohol front here, you can only buy hard alcohol in state run liquor stores - and it's expensive due to all the taxes on it. Some liquor stores are even open on Sunday now. We usually do booze runs to California where it can sometimes cost half of what it costs here - especially at Rite-Aid.

I thought it was weird that you can't buy beer and wine on a Sunday in Atlanta.

In Maryland, in Baltimore County, the liquor stores are closed, unless they are a bar/restaurant that also sells alcohol, which smoe do just for that reason. In Harford County, teh next county over, they sell alcohol on Sundays, so there are some county border crossers. Although, maybe wineries can sell wine on Sundays since it is made there and can be sold but not too sure.

Of course, as much as I laugh about people from out of state trying to pump their own gas, it can be even funnier to watch a native New Jerseyan try to pump their own gas in another state. I've known people that will drive miles out of their way to find a place with full service because they can't figure it out for themselves.

I think the not buying alcohol on Sunday is true for the whole state of Georgia. If I remember correctly, you couldn't buy it on Sunday in Savannah, either.

I dare say I'm old enough to remember when buying beer in Ontario that you had to fill out a form (there was only about six brews to choose from anyways) and wait for the clerk to go back and retrieve the stuff from the warehouse. Same with the liquor store. And the service hours were something like banking hours (back when they closed at 3 pm every week day).

For those non-Ontarians out there, you still can't buy beer at the grocery stores in Ontario (or at least, not most of them). Alcohol control is a very long, and strange story up here owing to the fact that the government fears that we citizens have no self-control when it comes to consumption, and that without these laws there's a very good chance that we all could just burst into spontaneous street riots... or hockey games. Depending on the weather.

My boyfriend is one of those people who, if faced with the prospect of pumping his own gas, starts to panic and has to ask another customer for help. I'm not a rum drinking by any means, but somehow white rum doesn't register as rum in my brain. I guess it's because I stay clear of dark spirits in general so when I see a clear drink I think it must be good. :)

Oh, by the way, we don't use Bacardi here to make mojito anyhoo. We just Havana club or Seven Tiki (http://www.seventiki.com/) (which is a New Zealand made white rum that Bacardi just purchased for heaps of $$$)

Seven Tiki is fantastic. In fact so are all the range of alcohol that 42 Below make. Hopefully Bacardi doesn't stuff things up by changing things around.
