I have all the Stuffit DropTools on my computer. I've really only used the .sit and .zip formats, though, b/c they seem like the most common compression types. When I stuff a folder, though, its takes more than double the amount of time as when I Zip the same folder.
Is there an advantage to using either format?

Well, ZIP works on PC. I've never seen SIT on a PC. However, if SIT takes longer, then it probably compresses better. Another common compression is RAR, but I don't know if it works on Macs.

If it weren't for the last minute, nothing would ever get done.

Most people can open ZIP files easier then SIT files. I find that SIT usually compresses smaller but not always. Many unknowledgable PC users may not be able to open SIT files either because they do not have stuffit, whereas all new PC's have something that opens ZIP, and all macs come with stuffit expander which opens ZIP or SIT. I know its not hard to download stuffit expander but do you really want to explain it to every single person you send a SIT file to?
Both are good formats though. Both compress well and protect files from getting corrupted. I have been a stuffit fan for a long time until they made dropstuff not free anymore. Even though I own stuffit deluxe, this made it harder for people I send and recive files from who may not want to purchase a $60+ license for what used to be free. So I started using and recommending http://www.maczipit.com/
Winrar and Macrar are also good but much less common. RAR/PAR is the best for segmented files where you can break up say a 200mb file into 20x 10mb pieces.

you have to make the stuffit a self expanding file then all can use it!

Most of the time.
I've had more .sea files corrupt thru emailing than either .sit or .zip.
My usual rule of thumb is if recipient is PC send .zip. If recipient is Mac send .sit. If recipient machine unknown, send .zip.

Yeah, I used rar a lot when I owned a PC. In addition to DropStuff and DropZip, I also have DropTar. wtf? Thanks for the info. For my purposed I think I'll continue using zip most of the time since I prefer faster compression/decmpression time. We have a super-fast LAN so uploading/downloading time to ftp isn't much of an issue. Our sister company is the recipient of most my files and they have all the same equipment as us. The only thing I really care about is that all the files make there okay without being corrupted.
