oh, and let's not forget the boss who thinks that your personal time away from work is still their time and they must call you and leave messages to tell you inane things that they want you to do for the next day. When I leave work for the day or the weekend or whatever, that time is my &*@#^% time!

I actually joked about that with my wife... she wasn't amused.
The worst part was that we knew it had to come down and were just arguing 5 minutes before it fell about whether it could wait until summer. Apparently she was right.
She's never going to let me hear the end of it.

I almost think Parking is worse than shopping during December.
Luckily most of mine is purchased online or ahead of time.
And the running of the red lights is sickening now too...especially the ones that run it only to remain in the middle of the intersection so oncoming traffic cannot go. I feel like ripping off their windshield wipers and moving on.

I should have been more clear in my post because I definatley consider parking to be part of shopping. Don't know why some people are so rude this time of year...now I'm thinking about it and I need to go take a walk.

winter brings out the reruns in in minivans with 8 inches of snow on top of there cars. and because they are 3 feet tall and can only see over the steering wheel with 2 phone books under them there is no way they are gonna reach the snow on top of there car. so they just go along driving 35 in a 50 and when they finally do hit 50 a huge hunk of ice/snow comes flying off and smashes into the car behind them causing a 15 car pile up and they don't even notice because there rear window is iced over, are busy talking on there cell phone, and drinking a moca frapachino

I feel so bad for all you guys up there in the ice and the snow. I grew up in it and remember how much it sucks. None of that here, but I spent a good 20 mins huddled in my tiny bathroom with my son, 80lb dog and cat during a tornado watch at 6:30am saturday morning! Hell of a wake up call! No damage this time thank god.

People who are too lazy to clarify why they are forwarding an e-mail to you.
Just sending me a random dieline file attached to an e-mail that consists of a hundred forwards and comments doesn't help me. What product is this dieline for? Why are you giving it to me? When can I expect more information? What exactly do you need me to do? I am not going to sift through pages and pages of random babble to try to find out what the important bits are.
If you have the word "manager" in your title, do some freakin' managing. Just forwarding e-mails to people is not managing. A computer could do that job just fine, thanks. We don't need the meat in the chair that makes more than $100k a year for that.

Well said TBK.
Sucks too when they send you a die line with no information and then get upset a week later when the box design hasn't even been started. I do one of two things at that point. I either send then the empty die lines and say "Here is the box design with all of the information you provided me" or I send them a file that has the phrase "You are a dum bass" and a picture of a baby picking it's nose on each of the box panels. After that they usually send me more information.

Love it when clients give me CDs that aren't labelled.
Or better still, they label it with "printing" or "flyers" or "brochure" or "business cards" and nothing else. Yes, your business cards are the only business cards I've received on CD this year. If you are going to label your CD with those words, you might as well not label it at all.

Clients that tell you to just pull images off of their website to use on their promotional products. I can't really do anything with a low-res, 1x2 image that they want to fill a letter-sized page. I feel very scrooge-like this Christmas. You would think that one of the biggest, most famous, multi-million dollar international cosmetics companies could afford graphic designers who know what the heck they're doing.
I'm placing translated text into a selling guide that's already been designed by their in-house designers. Whoever did this just LOVES to hit tab repeatedly to move text to the following line instead of using a soft break or even a hard return. I also don't think they've ever heard of the little doohicky that you put in the front of a paragraph so that the following lines line up with that point (I don't know what it's called, but I sure as hell know how to use it). No, this schmuck just hits tab at the end of the previous line until the text he wants to align with the text above ends up where it's supposed to. ARRRGGHH!!!11

I was trying to explain my situation and looked like this:
I.cannot.use.my.space.bar.right.now,please.let.me. restart.to.see.if.it.helps.
My jerked chain right now is certain people who think we can put together a 300+ slide show together with all slides custom for each agent in the matter of a couple of weeks. OH yeah, I just got the list today!

This person's keyboard has been broken for over a year then, and this company makes enough money to buy him a new one anyway.
While I'm at it, what else jerks my chain: my stackable washer/dryer slowly taking a crap on me. At the end of the wash, my clothes are still sopping wet (I can wring out the water) and the dryer's big felt ring (acts as a buffer between the rotating drum and the stationary portion of the interior) has completely dislodged itself. I'm guessing I could get away with drying clothes in there without it, but I'd rather not have some article of clothing get jammed in there and cause some sort of serious problem. Granted this thing is ancient, works for crap and has a load capacity the size of my fist, but I was hoping to make do with it for a couple more years until we moved into a larger apartment or bought a house. So some of the money I have earmarked for wedding-related stuff will now be going towards a new washer and dryer. How domestic.

Yesterday I went to pay for about $80 worth of groceries. My card declined even though I knew I had about a thousand in my account. So embarrassing not being able to pay for groceries. We are regulars, so we just put the groceries aside to go get some money out.
Went to the ATM to check my account. Sure enough, I had a thousand in my account (all unavailable), but for some reason, it said I also had about $68,000 in funds that was yet to be cleared! What the hell!? The ATM couldn't do anything for me so we went home to scrounge around some cash and returned to the supermarket to pick up our groceries just before they closed.
So I called the bank up right away. The lady initially said that my funds were locked because my cheque hadn't cleared yet. The cheque was only for about $250 so that couldn't be it since I couldn't even spend $80. After being put on hold for ages, she figured it out and set it right.
Apparently the person that had typed in the details for the cheque had typed in the cheque number instead of the amount!
Dumbass! You'd think big warning bells would've happened when someone tries to cash a foreign cheque that large!!!

A coworker here had a mortgage check bounce because someone at the gas and electric company misread the check she'd sent to them (a week before she wrote the mortgage check). They thought her 1 was a 7, so they withdrew a $700 payment from her checking account for a $100 bill. And to top it all off, she had to present the mortgage company a notarized letter from either the utility company or the bank where her checking account was (I don't remember which) explaining the nature of the error before they would remove the negative mark on her credit rating.

Clients that use multiple question marks. One lady said something like,

so... this guy called and said he wanted to have his website redesigned. I talked to him about his current site (which sucks) and he said he wanted to redo it because a friend of his aunt or some crap just made that for him for free and he wants it to look more professional and up to date. Well, fortunately for me, he got my name from my dad, who said he was already quoted $X for the site which was too much. Its a basic HTML 10 pages whatever and $X was already twice as much as I would have charged so I found a happy little medium and sent him a quote.
I called him and asked what he thought of it and he complained that it was way too high. He asked if I could come down at all and I said I could come down about 7% he said that was ridiculous and why would a website cost so much? EXCUSE me? I thought you were looking for something not free and something professional looking? Did you think you'd get another free site that doesnt look like crap? I was so insulted. No respect.

You've got to admit though, if your dad gave him a 2x price estimate before he even got to you, then the guy has been quoted:
2x, then x, then x-7%, so any sane person would figure, "hey, I wonder what happens if I just keep asking? It's going to go even lower right? Might as well try"
Edit: actually, I read things a bit wrong. Looks like he was quoted 2x then 1.5x, then 1.5x-7%, so is that equal to x (the usual price you charge)? If not then you're playing him at his own bartering game aren't you.

I love it when past clients refer new ones, but when freinds and family refer people they know, it often involves some cranky form of the kevin bacon connection thing, where they think that they are entitled to "mate's rates" even though they have never met you before.

I had this same problem and I solved it by buying a high quality steel thermos. I also checked into thermal coffee carafes but they were more expensive and the thermos had the advantage of being portable. Anyway as soon as the coffee is done after pouring my first cup I put the rest in the thermos and it stays hot and fresh all day. Just be sure and pre-heat the thermos with hot water before you add the coffee.

I hit him up about it and he said that's what he always sends a proof before plating to double double check. So now I know how he holds up jobs. Client approves and we set a deadline for print for a few days from approval date. We don't set a new deadline when my guy sends this second proof for approval.

The whole purpose of a CTP system is that the job has been approved and NEEDS plating --- direct to plate, not direct to re-proofing! Idiots, you just have to love them! ;)

A client called up complaining that she never received the proof for some artwork that was supposed to be emailed to her last year.
My coworker said he had already sent it twice to her. When I asked him if he had received any bounced/returned messages, he said got 2 bounced emails (message not delivered) but didn't do anything to chase it up. Turns out he had spelt her email address incorrectly both times. He said that he often gets bounced messages so he doesn't chase them up anymore.
Someone please tell me this is not normal practice!

It's easier for me to mention St. Inky Moronicus's failings to my boss casually and when it seems to be relevant.

It's been so long since i've had to know this sort of thing offhand ^:)
Setting up my new computer.
I didn't want to migrate over my user account from my old computer because I thought starting fresh seemed like a good idea. After I had it running I realized that I didn't have all of my bookmarks, E-mail, passwords etc.
So I decided to migrate my profile over from my other machine ... OSX won't let me merge or overwrite the owner account and I have to rename my transferred account because it has the same name as the owner account.
Fine. Transfer over a shit ton of files only to find out that I cannot log in to the transfered account. **** around with changing passwords and logging in and out of account for an hour or so before I give up and attempt it again.
Try again and I can finally log in. Hooray! Everything is good, e-mail is there files are in place - everything appears to be spiffy. Except it keeps asking for my password for almost everything I do. Move a file -> type a password. Check E-mail -> type a password. Start Firefox -> Are you sure you want to open a downloaded application file? Every time I open the browser. I was thinking I accidentally installed Vista.
So I decided to take a break from troubleshooting and play a little Full Tilt Poker. No tables would show up after I clicked on them. Ugggg! Check the Owner account and everything is fine.
Pitch the transferred account again.
Now I have a dilemma because all of the freelance files I transferred over are "owned" by the deleted account and I do not see an apply to all enclosed files button under get info. Rather than waste another couple hours attempting to find the right solution I just trash them all and bring them all over again without the help of migration assistant.
I guess I will be stating from scratch.
Tried to move my e-mails over (a couple times) manually this morning before work only to find that they didn't show up ... maybe Mail just needs some time to process them. (2.5 gb over 1000 inbox messages) Yeah I know I need to go through them...
I can't wait until I get my software next week! Wheee!

yesterday morning leaving for work i noticed something odd in the back yard. the cooler that has been sitting outside for awhile was moved in front of the grill that is right by our sun room roof. i noticed it but didn't think anything of it.
i got home from work yesterday and my roommate notices a lawn chair on top of the AC unit. so i grab my flashlight and check it out and the gutter is pulled down too. So i call my parents then i call the cops.
The cops come out and ask a few questions and look around the house. She says that it definitely looks like someone tried to get on the roof or did because there was change and a pen on the roof by my roommate's window. those windows were open btw. they said they will patrol the area more often and told the neighbors about it.
so i'm just a little freaked out about this because they did this at night with us at home sleeping. they could have came in the house no problem but didn't. so i'm just worried about them coming back again. so with all that said we moved the chairs and cooler into the garage locked all the windows and left the light on in the back yard.
now i have a reason for getting a big dog and a 45 =]

Reuber, it could always be worse. I just had to spend a grand to get my breaks, rotors, and axles replaced. Apparently, they were so bad that the break pads themselves were sort of flopping back and forth, not grabbing anything when it was time to stop. Nothing like driving around in a deathtrap going downhill to make you realize that breaks are one of those things that you need to live. However, I could have always Flintstone'd it and saved a $1000. It does suck though to have to turn out that chunk of change for anything car related that's not an upgrade. I feel your pain Reuber.

OK, we have 6 locations... all different types of employees. When it comes to our shipping department, I don't understand them. They get orders thru out the day at every location, they scan the internal tracking sticker, it prints a shipping lable, they stick it on the box (sounds simple to me).
Now the problem, which I have to deal with...
Once they stick the UPS lable on the box, they SHOULD scan it! Instead, they keep going putting their pretty little UPS lables on other boxes. Once they are all piled up, now they decide to scan the UPS lables (which could be several hours later).
OK, I get a call from a customer... "I see our xxxxxxx has shipped, can I get a tracking number?"
UHM, NO, the idiots didnt scan it yet, so it sits there waiting patiently.

Not all restaurant jobs are like that. Many overstaff in an effort to 'make sure there's enough people around to give impeccable service' and you end up with less of the pie so to speak. My boss still wants us to give the best service possible, but he wants us to make good money (less likely to quit and make him have to train a whole new person). So there's only two people for the whole place, and he only hires people who have experience and aren't afraid to bust their asses. I only have 16 years waitressing experience, but I know what I'm doing. ;)

We don't tip in New Zealand so wait staff are usually students or people passing through waiting for a better job to come along. It means service can be pretty crap.
Since no one is working for tips and they get paid regardless, they really don't try too hard.
Also, it means that people don't stay in the position for long.

I experienced very bad Australian restaurant service on my recent trip to Perth, so bad that it made me grateful for the tipping system we have in the US. 45 minutes for coffee? Yup. It happens. It once took us 45 minutes to receive our drinks order at dinner. By then we had finished our meals but were totally dying of thirst. Had they given us drinks before ordering, before dinner and then during dinner, we would have ordered at least 3 rounds. Since it took that long to get our drinks, we just finished those and left after our meals.
I left a pretty nasty review on that restaurant on an online dining website.

So I need to make a newspaper ad and I was looking for some tips online. Found this:
It's a little-known fact that sinks your advertising as soon as you begin...
...And that is letting the newspaper make your ad for you!
Yeah, I know it's a free service, but just because it's free doesn't mean it's good.
You see, the newspaper employs a Graphic Artist to put the ads together. He has to make lots of ads. To save time he churns out these ads super-fast using standard templates that can be re-used again and again.
To be fair, these ads do look good artistically.
But being artistic doesn't sell squat . . .
. . . I mean, what does a Graphic Artist know about selling? All his training has been focused on art stuff and making the ads look good. His ads will just blend in with the rest of the newspaper and won't catch the attention of prospective customers.

So I need to make a newspaper ad and I was looking for some tips online. Found this:
WOW!!!
that is disgusting. I worked at a newspaper and took my time with each and made sure they had their own "personalities". Boy is that a slap in the face. Plus I was a Marketing/Advertising Major as well and not only do I know what is pleasing to look at, but the how/why to communicate to people.
And, we were paid, so it was free to them but not to the paper. Oh, and I got quite a few side jobs from working at the newspaper where people saw my talents.
sorry about that...and if you need any help / questions with your newspaper ad, i might be able to help you out.

It was pretty insulting. Thanks BJMR, This is my first newspaper ad so I was just looking for tips. I feel as a GD, I know how to communicate with people through my work!
They were trying to sell a book (which was as big as a dictionary) on how to design newspaper ads.

South America also had a really really bad year. They usually help cheapen grain prices substantially (i.e. last years soybean prices ~$5.50 bushel now ~$12.00 bushel).
Even more fun will ensue depending on how many farmers change their rotations for more bean land this year.

Sure were! Most of these people are in their late 50's. I guess they freak out and are easy targets because they need to get rich quick scheme so that they can retire pronto.
They are so desperate and pushy though. Zero design sense.
So there is this company they all work under, only every member wants a totally different coloured/style business card. The only thing that is constant is the company logo. Some like butterflies on their card because they love butterflies and someone wanted a pic of their yacht on it. I can't believe the company allows for such crazy personalisation of the cards. I guess at the end of the day, the company really don't care about their image at all. As long as people keep buying in, they are happy.

So one of my staff has been sitting on a logo design for about and hour and from the looks of it, he's typed out the company name and now he's going through every font in the system trying to find the right one.
So I asked him how many logos he's going to come up with for the client to have a look at.
One.
So I asked him if he did any sketches or conceptual stuff to get to the solution that he has gotten. I mean, typing out the company name isn't exactly a concept.
No, he does it all in his head. So, he had a think, what's a great concept? I know! I'll type out the company name and that can be the logo! Then he had the cheek to say that people do sketches at uni but none of us sketch in the real world.
I told him I sketch for logos so that I can get down a bunch of ideas down quickly. I go throug about about 5 before picking one quickly and getting it down.
I mean, taking 1 hour to do a text only logo with no concept is really naff. He is going to do a gradient in the background and apply filters to it next so that it doesn't just look like the company logo typed in a special font. How can I tell this person that is not a concept?
Some people can do things in their head. They can. Some people don't have much going on upstairs and shouldn't leave creativity to inside their head.
DesignStudio
02-17-2008, 10:41 PM
I don't do sketches either, I just visualize concepts in my head, and then draw the best one. Though sometimes it does take several attempts to make what's on the paper match what's in my head. But this works well for me, and it sounds like it doesn't work well for this guy.
Providing I'm understanding you right, I think the most important phrase in your post is "one of my staff". If this guy works for you, then you're well within your right and responsibility to tell your employee what is expected of him and how he should do his job. It's nice not to have to micro-manage, but some people need the extra guidance, and it sounds like this guy is one of them.

I don't know because people are miserable?
I'll vent since I've had issues with driving to work the last few months. There is only ONE way to get to the highway to get to work - one day it may take me 10 mins to get to the entrance ramp, another day it could take me an hour! (once ON the highway, mind you, usually traffic is fine). But right now, there is construction on the bridge. Two lanes merge into one - you either have to turn left, or go straight - which then you hit the ramp on the right. I need to go straight to get to the ramp. So, tell me, what the hell is wrong with people pushing up to the car in front of them, practicaly KISSING their bumpers so you can't get in, and BLATENTLY NOT letting YOU into their lane on purpose! Not to mention the dirty look you get. We all have to get to work, and we all are annoyed by the nasty traffic on this road. But purposely not letting someone in - esp. after seeing their turn signal on for a mile you would think SOMEONE would be nice enough to let you in! I let others in, why can't they let me in? I hate people today, and feel your pain buda. people are mean and rude and sometimes only care about themselves.

Mebbe your car is too "nice" for them to believe you will squeeze your way in. My experience w/Chicago (& St. Louis is even worse!) is that the rattiest car has the right of way because the driver obviously isn't worried about getting a dent in his ride. The well-kept cars have drivers who are too concerned w/keeping their car nice; therefore they'll be "nice" and not force the issue.
Then again, some people just turn into self-centered dickheads when they get behind the wheel. They don't give an inch because they are invincible behind the wheel of their ego...
Isn't Chicago always under construction?
DesignVHL
02-20-2008, 02:15 PM
Ha well yes we are under construction right now - they are widening all the highways and finishing up with the speed passes - ultimately it SHOULD help in the long run. But yeah there is always something going on somewhere with construction!
I wouldn't say I have the nicest car in the world. But it sure is not a junker. Pontiac Vibe from 04 ... :) People just get grumpy in the AM because drivers sneak up on the left to merge in on the right - and people who were sitting there for 20 mins to get over the bridge just get a little pissy and mean - I don't blame them, but at the same time - come on, we all have to make it to work! It is like this every morning. It really motivates me to work harder at night though so I can go off on my own and work from home, and be happy. :)

Really I don't think it's nothing, its part of a trend that is super frustrating- when people act like they are just plain more important than everyone else. It makes me so mad I get instant ulcers. The other day a woman ran up behind us at a restaurant and leaned over the counter where my wife and I were already standing, in order to shout her name to the maitre de and get on the waiting list before us. And the last time I had to go through customs at the airport, two women actually cut in line. I couldn't believe it. Every line was 30 people long, and they just walked up to the front and cut in front of this old couple who they thought wouldn't say anything, and they didn't. I'm sure these are the same people who I see on the road trying to merge ten feet before the lane ends in heavy traffic.

I second that, wholeheartedly. I also wish Route 80 would be repaved already. That road is littered left and right with chains of potholes. Though I really don't want to deal with the traffic that will most certainly result from the roadwork. I wish there was an "instant re-pave" button.

Potholes are nasty right now here too.
I agree, not sure why some people feel they are more special than others, and think they have a right to NOT wait in lines, or wait their turn, or just leave earlier and have more patience.
I can't tell you how many times I'll be coming off the highway onto an exit ramp, only to get the crap scared out of me due to some speedster jerk-o (usually some business suit arse in a fancy car) squeeze in NEXT to me practically driving me off the road, just so he doesn't have to sit 30 cars back and wait till its HIS TURN to make that left turn at the light. I try and move over to the right also to ensure this doesn't happen - because its happened too many times and it gets annoying. OH yeah, and when I do that, they have the nerve to be the one pissed off and flick the finger. Classy. Good thing we have a lot of snow on the ground, people can't squeeze in right now.
