I second that, wholeheartedly. I also wish Route 80 would be repaved already. That road is littered left and right with chains of potholes. Though I really don't want to deal with the traffic that will most certainly result from the roadwork. I wish there was an "instant re-pave" button.Yes, 80 looks like a B2 did a bombing run from PA all the way to NYC.

What I really wish is that this state would start taking people's licenses away. Doing more than 20 mph over the limit? License gets taken away. You cause an accident on the interstate during rush hour? License pulled. Reckless driving on the interstate? No license.

Yes, that's draconian and mean, but less cars would help out a lot around here.

i live about 4mins 28secs from sandy hook. they are going to start putting in a new bridge to get from highlands to sandy hook. when it's done it'll be awesome because the bridge wont open anymore but i have a feeling traffic is going to be horrendous this summer. i don't understand why all those damn new yorkers can't go to jones beach and make a mess there instead of my purdy beaches =] there are enough dopes in jersey to do that

One thing that pisses me off when people try to merge into my lane is when they don't bother to signal, or signal after they've already started moving over. I'm usually more than happy to let someone in front of me if they take a moment to put on their signal and give me time to slow down a little and give them room.

lol you wouldn't last a day on the hwy in chicago. :p going 15-20 over is pretty much the standard. Accidents happen when stupid people do stupid things, and drive recklessly. Or speeding when it is icy. If your going the speed limit, you get nasty looks for being too slow.

The signs that say "65 MPH" just sit there, taunting you, because you know you'll never get going faster than 40.

Oh, and let me add to my list: Dump trucks should not be allowed on the road during rush hour. You can deliver your crap the night before, or deliver it after 9:00 am.

That's funny because the part of 80 I'm on every morning (Paterson area) is a 55 mph limit. I usually leave late, so the rush hour traffic has mostly dissipated, but people literally drive 80 on 80. It's nuts. I actually passed a state trooper last week going 75 (with the flow of traffic ;)) and he just sat there. I guess 75's just not fast enough to bother with.

Had someone do that to me yesterday in a big blue Lincoln. I'm in the left lane and the right lane ends. There's a car in front of me and no cars in the back of me so this jerk needs to cut me off causing me to slam on my breaks just when the lane ends to get in front of me instead of going with the flow, WTF! Then the punk does it to the car in front of me! So, unfortunately I got real pissed. The car in front of me takes a left turn leaving my ass behind this guy in which I did something stupid. I floor my 300 hp Cadillac and blew the gd doors off that Lincoln and the punk thought he could catch up, so I let him. He drove right up on my rear end and then thought he could pass, but I nailed it and left him in a cloud of dust a second time for good. I should never let idiots on the road get to me that way but man it's like a zoo out there.

Absolutely. As a full time pedestrian, I'm often crossing the road - just when I think it's safe (no cars indicating a turn into my path) some lunatic turns into my path without indicating!

Man all you guys complaining about traffic need to lobby your job for different hours. There is nobody on the roads at 10:30 am. 10:30-7:00 is IMHO the perfect shift.

You are happy and carefree when you get to work because
a) You probably got a full nights rest
b) no aggravating traffic to deal with either way

It's not quite first shift - but it's not second shift either. Since your schedule is about an 1-2 hours off of everyone elses you never have to wait anywhere. Dinner at 7:00? We can seat you immediately. Grocery shop at midnight - walk right up to the cashier. Run some errands before work. Close out the bars the night before and still get at least 6-7 hours of sleep.

Using this schedule you don't get home from work that much later than everyone else because of the drastically reduced commuting time and you don't have to deal with customers for the last couple hours of your work day making you a lot more productive. I use an alarm maybe twice a year.

Is there any drawbacks?

True - I totally miss out on great happy hour specials. My afterwork drinks will start tonight at around 9:00 cause I shoot darts on Thursday nights. We will close out the bar at about 2:00 ... and I will still get 7 hours of sleep.

I know what you guys mean about commuting- such a hassle! I have to get out of bed, walk all the way down my hallway to the kitchen to turn on the coffee maker- and the hardwood floor is usually cold. Then walk all the way back down the hallway to my office. And then sometimes my dogs will try to jump up on my lap while I'm drinking my coffee at my desk, and they hardly ever signal. Arrr. What a pain.

I swear the people in the apartment above us have discovered a way to stay alive while not sleeping.

You can hear their music blasting and their seemingly-hoofed feet trampling post 3AM, and then, just when you think you can sleep in, at 8AM they've got their music blaring yet again. Oh, and that's also prime time to vacuum and move furniture.

Did I mention that their musical rotation consists of the same 5 or 6 songs repeated over and over?

Normally I'd just shrug it off as slightly annoying, but I'm sick to the point of having difficulties standing, and consequently trying to sleep more, so it has been jerking my chain a bit more as of late.

I've had enough of this ****ing winter. This is about the 4th time I've called in to work this season alone; I think that's the total that I've ever called in prior to this winter due to inclement weather. Granted, it's while I'm still at Target and the whole risking my automobile/life thing through the bluffy eastern Iowa terrain seems a little bit excessive for such a position (that quarter above min-wage isn't that big of a dangling carrot), but once this new job starts next Monday, I'd rather not be dealing with snow as the whole 'calling in' thing is not exactly what my new employers had in mind.

i wake up between the time of 645 and 7. my roommates alarm clock started going off today at approximately 5. he hit the snooze button 6 times. so his alarm went off for an hour! then at about 630 as i was finally getting back to sleep he let one of the cats upstairs and didn't bother to get her and bring her back down stairs. so im having people over tonight to record some hip hop tracks and the bass is gonna be bumpin and the cat might "somehow" get upstairs around 1 am :D

Lol, that sucks Typically. We used to have a flatmate that would set his alarm clock and then sleep through it for hours. The only way to rectify the situation was to get up when it went off, go next door and physically go and push him out of bed and onto the floor.

The_Black_Knight
02-29-2008, 05:59 PM
frankster, in that situation, I would just unplug the alarm clock and plug it back in before the snooze went off again. Then, when they oversleep, just tell them that the power went off.

frankster
02-29-2008, 06:06 PM
The power would have had to have gone off every day. He was totally ok with the method of "awakening" that we settled on. He needed to get up and couldn't and I needed to go back to sleep next door for another hour. It's probably not as bad as it sounds, waking up on the floor every morning to see a chick leaving your room in just her knickers and vest. If I had to get up early too then I'd make a cup of tea to soften the blow. I only had to deal with that for a year. He's married now, so my mate that married him has to deal with it. lol.

Client requests illustration of "connecting" for a therapy group.

Other designers should know not to do that. I glance over, and he's staring. I figure whatever, and look back to where I was, and I glance back, and he's still staring at me. At the store, at the gym, at a stoplight between vehicles. I don't know if it is how other males, in a world with rules against violence or whatever, need to express dominance or what? Great! You maintained eye contact with me longer than I did! Nevermind that I gave in because I think it's a childish demonstration of "I can pee farther than you" and that I think it's inherently stupid, it is a great achievement for you , one that you can go home and ****-*** to. No. I managed to get through a whole day of work without anyone else noticing that.

Why did your friend piss on your floor? Or do I not want to know?

My ex-roommate's boyfriend used to sleep over on certain nights of the week, and this big party he went to happened to fall on one of those nights. He came in all sorts of trashed. He had gotten in her bed, almost fallen asleep and then decided he needed to relieve himself. Except he didn't quite wake up. He just got out of the bed, stood in front of the nightstand, thought it was the toilet and proceeded to urinate on it.

I woke up to my roommate screaming and yelling at him, and then him in the bathroom trying to apologize to her while puking his guts out. "I'm sorry baAAAAAAAAAuuuuggggby...."

John G

My buddy did that to his girlfriend's TV (he stopped when she yelled at him) and then proceeded to walk over to her fridge (open of course) and finish. Her sister was staying over for the night and had claimed the girlfriend's bed.. and he promptly hopped into bed with her.

Some thugs did pop him in the face (broke his glasses) earlier in the evening if that's an excuse.

My friends husband came home in a drunken stupor late one night and the same sort of thing happened.

It involved turning on the light to the bathroom ........ but there was catch .. it wasn't the bathroom light. Let's just say there was a horrifically, violent act committed against a refrigerator that evening.

At least my fiance has never pissed on me or in the bedroom. When he's drunk and in a unfamiliar environment he fumbles around the room trying to find the door to the bathroom. He's normally got his eyes closed which is the biggest problem because if they were open it would be quite easy to figure out where the door is.

I'm used to it now though. I get up, grab his hand and march him into the nearest bathroom.

There was a theme rework. So the note card and the tote bag design need to be redesigned. The theme is “Spring Garden”. Then, some flower incorporated into the design. The flowers need to be an Iris, Lily of the Valley, Tulip. (you can have all three or just one kind.) I am still thinking this needs to be one color…I am not sure if you can find images of these flowers that are not color. Let me know if you have any problems. Maybe you can crate images of outlines of these flowers…like in a garden?!

As for the note card. This can be four color, please add the ‘spring’ design with the flowers. The card note size is 4 ¼”x5 ½ (they would like to be able to print these cards themselves, on their computer…is that possible?

Could you have these redesigns by next Wednesday? Thanks!

So instead, they sent in files with no bleed and spot colours set up as CMYK.

Once I asked the dentist he told me he needs probably a few days to illustrate the diagram.

I said no problem I'll talk to the doctor about it. Right after I said "he needs a week to..." he says, "Just go home Tom, if your not going to try (by trying, he means coercing the dentist to draw) having the attitude you have about it."

I'll tell you what's been jerkin' my chain lately! Small vent session about a pet peeve I have:

Anyone read Computer Arts Magazine? Its one of my fav. design mags - I LOVE IT. But their advertisements totally disapointment me, and give the magazine such a cheap look! If you thumb through HOW mag, you won't find very many badly designed ads, like you do in the CA mag. There are more bad ads than good. WHY IS THIS? WHY MUST IT BE LIKE THIS? WHY CAN'T CA only INCLUDE well designed ads - its a design mag - so I would think that their ads would want to reflect the quality of the magazine. It bugs me I can't help it! Anyone else notice this? I'd scan in what i'm talkin about, but thats not legal. :p

I love Computer Arts too but the March issue was weird. Have you got that one? I don't like the new die cut and those weird lime/green circle quotation marks throughout the magazine are ugly.

I have a subscription so I guess I just have to handle it. If I didn't have a sub I might stop buying it because of the new design.

I don't really look at the ads, but I can see your beef with them.

I don't mind the redesign - it was overdue. I liked the feb issue design and cover MUCH better though. I LOVE the front cover type treatment! :)

When a client needs an urgent poster A2 poster job, then upon collection realises he had meant to say A1.

Then he complains about the price for the job and wants to pay the price he got quoted for the A2 posters but printed in A1. So now I've printed a set of A1 posters as well as the set of unwanted A2 posters and he gets a discount on the A1s he takes home.

How does that work?

He said he used to be a printer too!!!

I think the biggest thing was his attitude towards me - as if I should have known that the posters were to be A1. Sure, the posters were on the small side, but an order is an order. I don't upsell people. If you don't know what A2 is, then ask for the dimensions.

I got another project request recently on my website, that falls into a certain category of requests that I get occassionally, though not often. The "client" seems to know far too specifically exactly what they want, and uses terminology that makes them seem overly familiar with the graphic design industry. When I provide a quote or estimate for the work, I never hear from them again. I'd say these are almost certainly other designers feeling out competitor pricing. It's really frustrating to me that we're not allowed to discuss pricing in a constructive environment like this one, and the only way to accomplish it is to waste other designers' time with bogus requests for work.

Just heard from my boss:

One of our clients owe us a lot of money from a previous print job so the new job that they just had printed had been printed and then put on hold. It has been sitting here at our office until they pay their old invoice.

We expect clients to pay their invoices within 1 month. If they don't, any new jobs don't leave here. I think that is fair.

Now they are threatening not to pay for the old invoice or the new invoice because their job won't be delivered on time for the weekend. They have had all week to pay (and the last month) and they need the print job for a show in the weekend.

That makes me so mad.

Client asked for dark green. When my boss called her up and asked for a Pantone number, she said "just any dark green". So we printed it a standard dark green. When she came to collect it she didn't like the colour. She wanted a much greyer dark green, the one we picked was too green.

So boss tells her that she can pick a green out of the book for next time and we'll match it. She said she didn't want these ones since she didn't like the colour. She wanted us to reprint the job.

Boss: Well, what do I do with these? You'll have to pay for this lot.

Yikes. That blows pretty hard. In retrospect, my total return is actually substantial, so I'm not too pissed...I was just kind of reactionary at the rebate/bribe amount because I was under the impression that $600 was the lowest amount people would be given, or you weren't getting one at all.

I'll probably be looking into a new TV now...I was thinking of saving for a MBP, but since I'm working as a designer full time now, the only thing I'll probably do on a new Mac is surf the Internet and fiddle with Garageband. How did you find out how much your rebate was going to be? I have yet to send my taxes off, $144 isn't enough motivation.

I am sure that right around the time the rebates ship out there will be a lot of tv's on sale for about $600 - $700. During Christmas my Dad picked up an Olevia 47" for $599 at Sears the weekend before black Friday. They were running a deal that took a few hundred dollars off if you charged it to your Sears card.

One of Turbo Tax's updates pretty much lets you know after doing the federal portion how much you're getting, and it said "You're eligible for a $300 rebate." without any explanation to the amount. Since I was unemployed through September and most of October, and I only worked part-time as an intern during June, July, and August, I'm sure that has something to do with it.

I'm holding off to see if Target will be carrying them with their electronics department reset that usually comes in April (the store I've worked at has 720ps for the most part), because with my Target Red Card I can get 10% off my next purchase if I put about another $500 on it *coughPlaystation3MetalGearSolid4bundlecough*.

If I get one soon, I'll let you know, but I've pretty much unanimously heard great things about Samsung.

*Rant is go*

Clients don't seem to understand the concept of "Artist Rendering."

They want me to "design" metal signs for their lobby, but really that just means I take their logo, make it one colour and put it up on a photo of their wall so they can see it before I ship it off to the sign makers.
So I thought it might be helpful to render the conceptual finished sign rather than just putting a white vector logo on a wall, so I put the logo into Photoshop, applied a basic steel texture/colour to it and added a drop shadow to it so it looks (mostly) like a 3-D sign actually hanging on the wall.
Apparently, this confuses people. I always explain to the client that it's only a rendering of metal, and due to the sign being real metal and the variances in the atmospheric lighting in the office, it may not look exactly like my rendering. I make it clear that I have no control over the final colour of their sign unless they choose to do it in plastic instead of metal. But today the response was, "We like it...but I believe you said the color could be changed if needed."
What?! I said no such thing! My exact words were:
"I have no control over the final colour---changing the preview colour won’t affect anything."
It's a RENDERING, as in, not real! I thought, if you saw that it looked like a metal sign, you were smart enough to realise that it represented a 3-D metal sign. Do you think we're going to be printing something on the metal to alter the colour? You asked for a steel sign, did you not? So no! The sign shop will NOT print the drop shadows or Photoshop generated bevels! I (http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a256/beowolfe03/WallPreview2.jpg)t's an artist rendering!!

Perhaps I'm better off just giving them the flat white vector. But no doubt they'd complain about the sign being white and not being able to see it.

I just can't win here.

*Rant completed*

1080P in anything under 50 inches is a waste of money. You can't tell the difference if you're more than 1 or 2 feet away from it.

Save your money on the TV and put it on a good power filter and HDMI cables.

Really? Did not know that. Even for gaming though? Now that I have the time, and something more than just the Wii (360 now, and a PStriple when the MGS4 bundle arrives), I want to make sure I get a really crisp image, but I am definitely not in the market for a 50" or larger...42" is almost too big for me even. I've been reading things on 'ghosting' and what not, but it's a lot of info to take in and I need to get some sleep.

May have to start a separate thread so people can continue to bitch. :p

*********this is a temporary hijack. You will be returned to your regularly scheduled thread shortly. Please stand by*********

MD--HDMI cables give a better picture and sound than the component cables do, partially due to no analog/digital conversion necessary. Difference in picture/sound quality of high-dollar HDMI over cheap HDMI is questionable, agreed. A lot has to do with whether you're running through a receiver or not, and the capablility of said receiver.

Rueber--unless you have VERY good eyesight (and some of you folks in the design biz obviously have the eye for detail), the difference just isn't there. Check out how many top-flight 1080p panels less than 40 inches are out there. Most of them start out @46 to 50 inches.

If you're big into BluRay (which is just a last gasp for the DVD format--it's dead but doesn't know it yet) or xbox360 or PS3, the added crispness is noticable over 50 inches. Since 1080P isn't broadcast, and no provider is crowing about broadcasting it in the near future, if you're not into one of the afore-mentioned groups, you're better off w/a 720P (check the warranties on the less-expensive ones, many of them suck) with the proper accessories to get the most out of it.

Check out hdguru.com. Great info. There is an article on there about warranties. I'll wander around it and pm you the link.

PM me if you want more info (facts? opinion? who knows?). I'm learning from you folks about the design stuff, but I do know a **bit** about Audio/Video.

**************We now return you to your regularly-scheduled griping. See---I told you it was temporary**************

most games display max 720p only (some do 1080i, but 720p is a better picture than 1080i).... Grand Turismo 5 may be doing 1080p when it comes out in a year though...

Just a little. Our local "meteorologists" (smug guys with suits who stand in front of a green screen...education in meteorology not required) updated the local site at 5:00 CST, saying that the storm has moved east of us and we should just be in for a calm night and a sunny Friday; it was still snowing at 9:00 last night, with a band of nasty weather from Des Moines to here according to Mr. Doppler.

So far they are right on the ' sunny Friday' but there's always a chance for a monsoon.

But really, you're thinking too far into it! Idiocy ftwlolwtfbbq! But hey, I have a great idea! Why don't I use this slogan to promote my social networking site aimed at healthy, vibrant youth from age 13-20? Oh man, that's super! all the work we (another girl is interning with me) do is not even considered for being used... we are working on the same projects (separately)... and we never have enough work.

So, my ten hours a day here ends up being spent on overworking the same project over and over and over again with no break... which leads to boredom... which leads towards me working on my own projects..

I did some in-house contractor work for a large (read: extremely large- number one in their field in the world) company once. Although they offered ongoing work (some contractors had been there in-house for years), I had to quit after just a few months because of the same problem you're having. Out of a given 40 week I was required to be there, I probably had a good 4-6 hours of work to do. Of course every weekend we were asked to come in for 20 hours of overtime where there was a week's worth of work that had been handed off on Friday evening and was needed by Monday morning. After three months I reached the end of the internet and my tolerance for downtime, and I had to quit despite the cushy paycheck.

I feel your pain, here's a list of things I didn't figure my dogs would eat while we were out of the house:

-Laptop charger
-Vacuum cleaner cord
-Shoes
-Entire bag of cough drops
-Entire box of herbal tea bags
-ibuprofen (that one cost us about $3k in emergency treatment)
-Couch cushions (to be fair though she was just trying to dig her ball out from under the couch)
-a hat
-chocolate covered raisins
-a loaf of bread
-package of hamburger buns
-partial bag of onions
-partial bag of potatoes
-poinsettia
-Mac computer cord
-iron supplement pills
-q-tips
-earings

I'm sure that's only a partial list, but that's what I can remember off the top of my head. And so I don't give all dogs a bad name, both our dogs are terrors... I mean terriers.

No, that's what made the job truly great. Not only was it against policy to be working on outside work (you couldn't transport materials in or out because of sensitive material and clearences). But we were using powerpoint as a print design tool, and our computers didn't have Adobe software on them. And in case you think you read that wrong, yes I did say that all design work was done in powerpoint.

I would have guessed they'd eat chocolate covered raisins too, I just didn't guess they'd figure out how to open the pantry and get the raisins off the top shelf.

Yes onions are poisonous, luckily they didn't eat many. The zinc in the coughdrops, the electric shock from on power cords, and especially the ibuprofen are all harmful. Luckily they survived the entire learning process, and now we take much better precautions. We've installed locks on all the food cupboards, taken the hanging towel off of the refrigerator since they figured out how to use the towel as a handle, and keep anything edible off of the counter since even though they are too small to jump up they've apparently figured out how to move furniture or open drawers to create stairs. For dumb dogs that will eat anything, they are pretty smart.

MD

well then we'd have to be home to shock them. They don't commit the crimes when there are witnesses home. We could leave a t-bone in the middle of the floor and they wouldn't touch it as long as we were around.

They know what they are and aren't supposed to do, they just think they can get away with it when we aren't home. And you can't punish a dog for something after they've done it, you have to catch them in the act for it to be succesful. They're thought process isn't such that they'll relate the punishment to what they did wrong, they relate the punishment to the last thing they did. So if they eat something they shouldn't, and then run up to us when we get home and we punish them then- they think they're being punished for running up to us.

I'd like to set up a hidden camera and a microphone so I can yell at them when I'm not home, but I think the hook and eye latch on the pantry and keeping the countertop clean is easier.

I would have guessed they'd eat chocolate covered raisins too, I just didn't guess they'd figure out how to open the pantry and get the raisins off the top shelf.

That's hilarious! And the stuff of cartoons.

We found out the other day that Tofu finds our air mattress quite delicious. So that's why he was hanging out under our bed (where we keep the air mattress). It's covered in bunny sized bites now and quite useless.

...But we were using powerpoint as a print design tool, and our computers didn't have Adobe software on them. And in case you think you read that wrong, yes I did say that all design work was done in powerpoint.

Wow, that really sucks... so at leas this isn't that bad... today is my last day anyway and everyone has pretty much told me to not do anything and relax... and the director thinks I did a really good job, so that's nice. A good grade should come out of this at least.

Hello, I'm Average Joe and I'm starting social networking site that is guaranteed to be the next Myspace because I'm just that cool!
I mean, check out my my personal, rocking motto:
"I'M IN A RACE TO BEAT LIFE SINCE I CAN'T CHEAT DEATH!"
You may think I'm big into Cancer Runs or an old folk's health club since my motto roughly translates into, "I can't wait to die since I'm going to die soon anyway!" But really, you're thinking too far into it! Idiocy ftwlolwtfbbq! But hey, I have a great idea! Why don't I use this slogan to promote my social networking site aimed at healthy, vibrant youth from age 13-20? Oh man, that's super! That will bring MySpace to its social networking knees, loln008DQcultrbkgtg!
PS: Screw you design girl! You are utterly helpless and have no say in my world! Take that! Buwahahaa!

---

Yeah. People with high expectations for their social networks make me laugh, but when you add it to the fact that they're too silly to even understand their own motto...that jerks my chain. But it's mostly just laughable. :p
It's even worst with porn sites.......

Well that kind of makes since, if by boss you mean wife or girlfriend. Otherwise, that's just wierd and seems to bring up some boundary issues.

And on second thought, that's not even normal if it's your wife. So that's pretty weird regardless.

Well my fiance replaced his old necklace with a new one. The only difference was that his old necklace was all medium sized black beads and the new one had the medium sized black beads with some smaller light colour beads thrown in.

When I finally noticed it was like I'd be neglecting him. I didn't want to ask how long he'd changed necklaces for.

My wife is the opposite, she buys new stuff- shoes, a purse, etc, and then hopes I don't notice.

When the boss asks me to come up with some new covers for our sample folders! Great!

So I grab out the corporate guide and standards manual, follow a few design elements, chuck our current slogan with our logo on the bottom in a white strip along the bottom.

He likes them. But says he thinks the titles for the covers should be on a CURVE across the top, and should be in rainbow colouring. I chuckled with him.

I printed them out, cut them down, put the new covers and spines into the folders.

"They look nice, but I really wanted to see the rainbow coloured text on a curve."

Er, okay. Sure, I'm your graphic designer but you can have a bit of leeway I guess. Maybe you'll see the error of your ways and realise it looks SUPER corny and utterly awful...

Guess what happened? No seriously. Go on... GUESS.

Oh the humanity.

Every time I get out the sample folders now, just watch how quickly I open them up in case the client dare sees the cover.

Wow... So I'm being asked to make a product list for the back of the book. Not asked, demanded to. Im demanded to raise hell with doctors that they look at the pdf documents I made, and to go in each page and identify what product was used in what place. He wants it done by friday this week, and Im going nuts trying to explain to him I don't know these people well enough to demand stuff from them, either you or your assistant's need to complete this task.

Is it really within my knowledge and jurisdiction to make the list my damn self which is what he really is asking?

Sure I'll design it, but getting all the assets to be proper, just nope. He is also trying to push out the current project director which is causing her (the project director) not to do anything I ask from her hence we are at a nice little stalemate due to his idiocy.
Oh well, I'll just keep collecting paychecks till this moron gets his shit together, or if not, w/e. I feel like shit whenever I'm thinking that but it really is true.
