For 13 years I lived with a woman that wouldn't lift a finger around the house. I kept saying that she will change, she'll grow up. She never did. I finally divorced her two years ago. I know the feeling of being the only one contributing to the relationship. I would suggest that you seperate and find out what YOU really want out of life. Its way too short to be wasting it on someone who doesn't appreciate you. You can't ask someone to change merily for the sake of changing. Either they want to change of they don't. They have to make that decision not you. You can only change you.

I hate it when people get everything given to them. My parents make me buy everything. Then I go to school and there are people that get a brand new car as soon as they get their learners permit.

And another thing that bothers me is when those stupid advertising people come in here and have to change the font of their posts. Usually it's to that god forsaken Times New Roman.

Know what really jerks my chain?

When the salespeople give me and ad to design for someone and they ask for a 2col x2' ad...and in parenthesis is says (LONG). I go ask them 'So you want a 2x2 turned?' and they are like 'yeah can't we do that?' and I am like 'NOOOOO' DUH! Hello! If you turn a 2colx2' ad it is no longer a 2col x 2' ad and it DOES NOT fit into the columns! You wamme to float it and have it look like sh!t? Huh? Huh? I can do that!!! GRR!

Simple...One column for us is 1.4' making a 2col x 2' ad equal 1.4' x 2'. IF you turn the ad then it becomes 2' x 1.4'. Ok...that will put you at 1 1/2 columns (approx) and 2' down. You CAN NOT have an ad at 1 1/2 columns. WTF is that? You can do something that equals those inches. A 2col x 2' ad equals 4' TOTAL...so you can do say...a 1 col x 4' ad if you prefer but you can NOT just TURN the friggin AD people! Column inches to NOT work that way. CALGON TAKE ME AWAY!! ;o)

ARGH!
Ok..wow...amazing how much better you can feel after posting here in this thread :o)

i am a senior @ OKSTATE and am having to do 10 hours of spanish this summer. i just started yesterday and its a pain. for one i am a night owl and the class starts at 7:30 AM and ends at 3 PM with a 30 min lunch break. why would i put myelf through this crap? well i wouldnt but my highschool told me i need 2 years of foreign language to skip it in college, so i took 1 year of spanish and 1 year of chinese (freshman and sophmore years).

so i graduate in 2000 and go to college in the fall, first thing my advisor tells me is 'Oh, your going to have to take 10 hours of foreign language because you didnt take 2 years of the SAME language in highschool' BAH! this class wouldnt be too bad if it lasted a couple weeks, but this last for 2 months, monday through friday. Thanks Jenks High School for giving me hell and pointing your students in the wrong direction

Frickin evil college book stores!!!!!!!!!!11111one I HATE selling back my books. I had to yesterday, so I could buy new books for a class that started LAST WEEK! Selling back these books were the only way I could afford to buy the p.o.s. new, overpriced books. I must have spent a good $120 on 2 books last semester... so naturally, I expect to get maybe 40-50% of their value back when I sell them... ludicrous??? I didn't think so...

So I sell them back, they gave me $10 for one!!!! I must have payed like $50 for that one!!! The other they refused to buy back, because it wasn't in use next semester! ugh!

I know this is prolly the norm for college kids anywhere... but man that just burns me up!

Another thing:

Sales reps that hand you their own designs... I know it's been mentioned beofre but OMG!!!!!1111one I just got a request for a new website design, the rep sends me a manilla folder with 'ideas' in it... basically he's layed out the navigation in a pyramid scheme that dominates the entire page, the text on the buttons are all half assed and mis-spelled, and to top it off, it's layed out over a freakishly over-compressed jpg bg image that's EXTREMELY pixelated and chalked full of artifacts... I'd like to throttle the guy... All of the images he gives me to use on this site are over-compressed and ridiculously blown up jpgs... and these are his idea of 'hi res images'!

Oh well... time to go make a beautiful site out of a pile o sh!t =P

Things that jerk my chain: The word 'JAGUAR'

I HATE it when people pronounce it 'Jag Wire'. That drives me up the wall.
The extreme opposite is when people pronounce it 'Jag You Are' - while probably correct, it sounds hoity toity.
'Jag Wahr' is how I learned it.

How do you folks say it?

Jag-wahr - American, which is the way I pronounce it.

Jag-You-Are - Proper British way of saying it. I hate Americans who pronounce it that way, it just makes them sound stupid.

If I was any less productive right now, I'd be comatose.

Well, I pronounce it Jag-Wire.
Now I know I have a speech impediment and should get a speech therapist.
That in turn will affect my self-confidence and self-esteem.
I will then turn into a hermit in a remote cave in the hills of WV where I will refrain from ever speaking again.

In high school I didn't have a first name, everyone thought it was cool to call me McNutt...which was fine, no big deal...I made lotsa friends bc everyone wanted to know who this 'McNutt person' was..LOL! But get someone on the phone and have to order something...like a Pizza or whatever...HUGEST pain EVER!

ME: I need to place an order please

Pizza dude: Ok go ahead

Me: a medium supreme with thin crust. I'll pick it up.

Pizza dude: anything else?

Me: Newp, that's it

Pizza dude: Your last name please

Me: McNutt

Pizza dude: McKnight?

Me..NO! McNutt. M c N U T T

Pizza dude: McNulty?

Me: No..it's McNutt...M - C - N - U - T - T...McNutt...like a NUT with TWO T's

Pizza Dude: *giggles* (lil Fkr) ohh ok McNutt

Me: Yes

So I get the pizza box and you know where they print the name on the side of the box...what does it say - McNutt?? No..uh uh...of course not!! it says McKnight...EVERYTIME even tho I spell it out!

I frickin hate it when sales reps screw up my sites... In my company, Sales Reps have access to Front Page (i know, but it's the only WYSIWYG editor we have access to). My main gripe here is that they ALWAYS go in and start tinkering with things. They're only permitted to make text changes, but for some reason, they constantly find a way to screw something up. Then a Task Order falls in my lap making all these demands, sort of like it's MY fault that they screwed up the customer's website... ARGH!

This jerks my chain

I'm pasting this from an email I sent a few friends so mind the obvoius stuff most of you know anyway.

I got this job over a month ago to do a awesome poster,(heres the thread for that one (http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/?f=15&m=41349&g=42072#m42072)) full color with response cards to be glued on (for students to mail for info). the poster is on this card stock and was scored and folded into a quarter (for transport). Now the response card (size of a postcard) is a mailer, so no postage neseccary. the collge has a few ways of doing this and I wasn't sure on this one so I asked my printshop guy. He tells me that I have to contact postal services here on campus and they will take care of it. I tell him ok but to IGNORE the back half of the file I gave him but he can use the top half (meaning the response part where you fil in your info, etc). He says fine cause they can get started on it.

easy?

Well you would think. I call my client and she says she will call PS for me, great. so she does and i tell her that I will pick it up and take it over to the printshop. so a day later I go get it and it's a laser print out. no problem I go to the printshop and I write on it to USE THIS ONE! (has all the bar codes on it, etc). He isn't in that day (which is typical) so his little lackey (with huge boobs) tells me to leave it in his box. I do! I call him and leave a message AND email him that it is in there.

He has had this job for like a month now anyway (usual turnaround time in 2 weeks). but my client is fine with it... being cool. Well I go in today for a different thing and he just happens to have that job done today. GREAT. Hands me one and it looks awesome. Great portfolio piece! Well I'm sitting at the table waiting for him and lift up one of the response cards (cause the fill in side face the reader) and NO BARCODE...NOTHING!

TOOOOOOLLLLLLLLL!!!! I was pissed. I tell him and he looks at me with this blank stare! I'm like 'john remember that HUGE conversation we had about this? You told me i had to go get this done.. I did and dropped it off.' no clue..he says vaguely! Well what did you do with the printouts the PS gave you? Hummmm. now i'm worried where that is.

Luckly my client is cool about it but still.... jesus age christ man! so aggravating and my hands are tied cause university rules is everything goes thru him.

British accents annoy me, but mostly just from men. Actually, and foreigner that just doesn't speak English very well annoys me. That might be because I have to deal with it all day every day. Many of them WANT to learn to speak correctly, others use the barrier to thake advantage of people and they don't care to learn the language any better.

now that just really jerked my chain!!....i speak 3 languages fluently (i also understand spanish and french cos i use to speak them pretty well but not anymore) and the thing is that i probably speak all 3 of the fluent ones with some sort of accent and also probably make some grammer mistakes in all 3 but i really don't give a sh!t cos i'm already proud of myself for having learnt them and i feel more intelligent then most people who can only speak 1 language and who don't even try and learn another lanuage.

even if someone doesn't speak a language perfectly at least they try to and i really don't think people use is as an advantage........maybe you don't know this but it's easier to learn a language when you are younger, my parents speak english and italian with a very strong accent eventhough they have been speaking both lanuages for the past 21 years......i know alot of foreigners that get treated like sh!t cos they don't speak the lanuage at least they're trying....wouldn't it be worse if they didn't even try??? and if it's so annoying then just learn their lanuage!!!

oh and guess what when i speak english i have a english accent.....i guess i'm really annoying!!

I hate it when an employer lies to your face and tells you business is great and things are going places. Then he has the freakin' balls to lay you off and not give you your last two weeks of pay. This is what I just had to deal with!! Freakin' sucks!! Now I am back at my old job as a freelancer which means no insurance, no vacation, no benifits! I feel like someone wrapped a freakin' chain around my neck and dragged my butt all over town. Can't get any worse? Oh hell it can't!! It all happened to my girlfriend too who I live with and now we are trying to figure out how the hell to pay the bills!! I hate it when a person says to me 'You call yourself an artist, sh!t, I can paint, im sure I can do what you do.' or when a client goes behind your back and calls your printer and demands a lower price after you have padded the bill with a 10% pre-press fee.

Or another example of things I hate recently, slow pancakeing drivers, and especially slow pancakeing drivers talking on there cellphones. Also on my list of things I recently hate, calling ANYWHERE in AZ and having to sit through a 30 second speech in spanish before it even says anything in pancakeING english!!!! What the hell happened to English first, illegal immigrants later? (sorry benjo, but you don't know whats going on here right now, nothing personel k) Im venting, and this is what this thread is made for.

Oh yeah, pollution, lately all of CA pollution has been sifting into our state, I havent seen the mountains in what feels like weeks (and theres lots of em around) so yeah pancake pollution, and those hippie conservatives drving ther hybrid vehicles carpooling, in the CENTER LANE!!!! You would think with an IQ of 150+ they would know how to use a HOV or carpool lane....no wonder we have traffic problems.

k im done :) thanks thread, see ya later!

Also...on whole driving thing...I HATE when someone is driving slow in the FAST lane...you know, the passing lane!! WTF...get over in the right lane ya dumba$$!! GET OVER! So they don't get over...you finally get a break to get into the actual slow lane so you can pass them...they see you trying to pass them...they speed up! GRRR! You FINALLY get to where you can pass them so you can get back into the passing lane, then they get into the slow lane and speed up and pass you and this goes on for what feels like hours.

People..this is the Interstate, the highway...wherever you are. FK the games and follow the friggin rules! If you are driving below speed limit....and if you are NOT passing someone...GET THE FK OVER IN THE RIGHT LANE!

Peace :o) LOL!

Now I don't have a clue what motorhome they are talking about. There was no attachment of any photos. Is this a business card or a magazine or a poster or a tshirt or a billboard? WTF?

oh benjo, don't joke. i once had an art director take crummy digital photos of himself and his girlfriend, instructed me to make a replica of a famous movie poster (as gak for a tv commercial) then, as he's rushing me bc of deadlines, says: 'can you make me a bit thinner? oh, and make my (double) chin smaller'. it was a fun project, but that was just silly! oh, and all this after he's stolen bits of my lunch - and i can't stop for lunch because of, again, impossible deadlines! Speaking of bilingualism...benjo is right. You want attitude, drive to Quebec City and speak english. Did you know if you tried to set up a store there in english, and have english signs you'd be charged? Did you also know, that such charges is against the Canaidan Bill of Rights? Those *** slurpers get so many breaks it's disgusting. Here in Ontario we have bilingual road signs..in Quebec only french.

Stupid English should've kicked them out 200 years ago.

What irks me huh, let see....

It annoys me when you go to an art college, and when you create a photo-realistic object through Illustrator, people dismiss it as a trace job. I guess their methods of modeling a character from 3D Studio Max, using a character sheet on their screen isn't considered tracing.

Or how some students like to believe photoshop, max, or maya is more of a challenging program then illustrator is. Please, spare me with that garbage. There is no single 'easy' or 'hard' programs out there, if there were then one of them would be selling like hot cakes making anyone a designer (although that part is still true) and the other a waste of a perfectly good compact disc.

Then there is the fact that there are actual design teams working for large brand names such as nike who charge 18 dollars for a cotton t-shirt illustrating the word 'NIKE' on the front through a silk-screen method. The design team must be laughing their ass of at the stooge who purchases that hot piece of dung for what they are pricing it for. However, society wants us to all be hip and cool from garbage we don't need.

Or when I associate with my college friends, which all attend an art college, and they don't know a spit of any info on the masters of art who paved the way for them. Or the industry. How can someone expect to get a job in a industry they have no idea about? Whatever happened to knowing of Van Goah, Monnet, Cubism, Modernism, Abstract, and so on. Oh wait, there is a single art history class meant to teach those things which no one makes the effort in learning, thats right. Have fun hiring these yutz for your companies.

Thats my rant.

I am starting to get annoyed with this new age (my term for it anyway) use of multiple layers/screens/shapes in design work. The odd placed text, oddball sizes and shapes of smithereens and so forth. You can walk into any 'wanna be' upper echelon company, grab some of their advertising literature, and find almost the same garbage 4 doors down at the next 'wanna be' company.

Sometimes trends just annoy me. I'm not saying they are lacking in what we consider to be 'good' design...but it seems the GD catch phrase of 'think outside the box' just got put in a big box.

When you play ballhockey against a team that only had 1 sub, and is the worst team in the league, and you beat them like 13-0, but you didn't score one frigg'n goal, or get one darned assist.

I am so sick and tired of young ppl talking garbage instead of helping
someone out with their designs. I don't find it as much here but I
think that has to do with the age difference here. I am so sick of them
knocking someone down just to make themselves feel better. How the
heck is someone supposed to feel comfortable posting something when
they see how harsh ppl are and how much ppl verbally attach others?
Other forums seem to allow young kids to 'try' to critique someones work
and allow them to make harsh comments. Makes me wonder how the heck
they are ever going to make it in the real world being so rude and arrogant.
Guess I would like to see more forums like this and less forums with damn
kids on it telling ppl what they think. Don't get me wrong...there are some
talented kids out there. Ones that blow me away but that doesn't give
them the right to be arrogant. I guess ppl don't really understand the term...
'constructive'

Cat's eye I agree. I think a lot of it has to do with where we came from, as far as school goes. My professors and mentors were all from Eastern Europe, raised in the old school where things were harsh. My professors spoke of times when critiques were silent, they weren't told what was wrong, they just knew it, and they couldn't pass unless they fixed what was wrong (in their professor's eyes) without knowing what was wrong with it. Their upbringing made their teaching style really strict, and although I never underwent the silent critique, they were very verbally abusive at times, to the point that several of the beginning students had to leave school. Their criticism was very personal, and very harsh, ...just a very rigid environment to be brought up in. I don't know if that's the circumstance in which the people criticizing you were in, but that's the way it was for me. Maybe they realize they are being that way, and maybe they don't. I guess to some extent my professors thought they were preparing me for the real world, which can be very harsh. I wish too, that there were more forums like this. I like constructive criticism, and I like looking at other people's work and brainstorming with you all. If I ever come across as arrogant or harsh, please let me know, because I definately don't realize it.

LMFAO....there are a few others I could name.

It's just kid's attitudes in general these days. The only younger person I'm aware of that can't be distinguished from an adult is our own Ryan8720.

LOL, yleanna.
You know I'm wondering if ryaninwa is actually a girl pissed at being passed over for a job or promotion in favor of a guy in a Gucci suit...Could be Ryanin rather than the assumed Ryan. If so, just say so. I hate it when people are vague and you have to guess what they mean. Reminds me of my clients, sometimes.

well, ryaninwa said several times that the problem with the field is the people who only care about looks and money and popularity and not choking on their silver spoons. i was talking to brandon and donna about it when brenda and tiffany came over in their daddy's jag and said that we were late for trig. so i said, like, 'oh, gag me...' and then we went shopping, y'know?

don't know what gender that dude is, don't know what age, either. i DO have an inkling about how big the chip on his shoulder is. whatever the criticism was about the work that put it there, it sure must've stung. but we all know about being able to take criticism with a grain of salt, right?

like, totally. graphic design is sooooo highschool.

ROFLMFAO! I am ashamed to say I watched that in the younger days....UGH!

Ok...yeah..I'm with PD. they lost a chance at a job bc of a male..that's what I'm thinkin. Man I put up with BS ALL day bc I'm a chick, people saying I need a man to do this and that, but when it comes down to it and something is broke, who do they all come too...ME...yeah me. The other women can't fix it, the men can't fix it...apprently JUST me. Hell they can't even put toner in the fkn printer themselves. DUH!! DIRECTIONS PEOPLE!! They come in the box!

I also think that he/she has got to have some low self esteem to be going on and on about how all the beautiful ppl and rich ppl are getting all the jobs. FK...get over yourself!! I'm not a hot model and I grew up far from rich so suck it up and work to get what you want!!!!

ohhh ha...I didn't mean to rant but I guess I was a lil annoyed :o) It's all good! Thanks thread!!

LOL...some guy came in today...made a brochure in MS word....8000 run on the press. Tought to shoot with the camera because of the screens, and we couldn't easily go to image setter because our PC won't hook up to it. I don't have MS word on my mac on principle. The guy went on to tell me he took a course at a local highschool for it. I said 'wow, how's it feel to be a real designer now?'. I think the acid that dripped off those words put holes in the floor. At that point I walked back to my desk and sat down.

Magnus, I can't tell you how many times some 'mundane' has confided that they once met someone who told them about a book that a friend of theirs saw about a community course that their brother-in-law thought about taking in art or design that ushered them into the unique world of GD...

One woman at a corporation I once worked for would come in and watch me work and chime in at every move how she had taken a course that told her all about designers and our 'trade secrets' like - and I am not making this up - listening to music to stimulate our creativity. 'Yeah,' she'd say, 'I learned all about you guys... I know all that stuff now.'

Whew! Wish I'd have had the control to respond as you did M. Unfortunately, after the 23rd time of her incursion, I'm afraid I responded in a manner similar to D-F's sig...

Thanks thread,

BB
