Haha every post on this forum is about font identification.

The forum should probably be renamed, because I don't see any typography conversation.

So I guess I should start things off if I'm going to complain, right?

The attached image is a foundations study assignment called "Klingon," in which we were told to take a single typeface (futura bold example here) and dissect the typeface without transforming the proportions of each element. The more limited your "toolbox" of working elements, typically the better results. We tried to limit ourselves from 5-10 elements I believe. The decision to include numerals is a possibility as well, although it can cause some problems if not handled properly.

The "toolbox" consists of the elements used, and I believe in all of these I did not repeat the element more than once in each character's composition.

The sketches were some of the itterations I came up with, choosing the 9 which best unify the typeface and help express some of the formal qualities contained in the original typeface. The results naturally end up looking alien, thus the name "Klingon."

This experiment is a very fun thing to try on your own time, and can produce some elegant / beautiful results, particularly with serif faces such as caslon & bodini.

I'm that quick. :D

Nifty, although it doesn't look like actual Klingon. (Maybe somebody else can verify that... the only fictitious language I speak is Quenya.) ;)

Where's Ned? He might be able to verify...

It looks real cool though. :)

Heh it's not supposed to look like actual klingon - it's just named that for the "alien" results that occur for nearly all of the typefaces.

Bodini, Caslon, and more classic serif faces usually end up looking like some arabic inspired face. I'll try to grab some examples from my friend that took the foundations course with me that quarter - i think he used caslon.

One project I had in school was to come up with three new letters for the English alphabet. They had to look like they fit in with the original 26 letters. It was tougher than it sounds...

The only characters I remember coming up with was a combination of: T and H (to finally come up with a "th" kind of thing) and a capital-G-lower-case-y thing that looked kinda French.
