Haha every post on this forum is about font identification.
The forum should probably be renamed, because I don't see any typography conversation.
So I guess I should start things off if I'm going to complain, right?
The attached image is a foundations study assignment called "Klingon," in which we were told to take a single typeface (futura bold example here) and dissect the typeface without transforming the proportions of each element. The more limited your "toolbox" of working elements, typically the better results. We tried to limit ourselves from 5-10 elements I believe. The decision to include numerals is a possibility as well, although it can cause some problems if not handled properly.
The "toolbox" consists of the elements used, and I believe in all of these I did not repeat the element more than once in each character's composition.
The sketches were some of the itterations I came up with, choosing the 9 which best unify the typeface and help express some of the formal qualities contained in the original typeface. The results naturally end up looking alien, thus the name "Klingon."
This experiment is a very fun thing to try on your own time, and can produce some elegant / beautiful results, particularly with serif faces such as caslon & bodini.
