Week numbers in the first column of each month (Wno). Just put down the week number you want to do. First in first served. Any left overs will are subject for a second round.

Nice Buda, I'll take week #41.

You're gonna need to cross off the weeks taken somehow so people can see what's still available. http://home.comcast.net/~rnick9/koolsmiley.gif

Good point Kool. I'll try and update the calendar with names at least once a day.

Not to be picky, Buda, but for those weeks that span two months, you should block out the week on both ends. :D

Well, while I'm at it I might as well rename a couple of the other months. Nedruary, Nedpril, Ned, Nedly, Nedgust, Nedtober, Nedvember....You get the picture...

Mind you guys, there's nothing stopping you from renaming your month on your own page!

Nothing, except morals, of course... :D

... oh, which does bring me to another question... Are we going to have a template for the dates area, so that it remains consistent throughout the calendar?

I would say no, but they would need to be on there fairly visible. :D

Ned
02-06-2007, 04:46 AM
We don't need no steeenkin' dates! ;D

budafist
02-06-2007, 05:28 AM
I think with something this big it is a good idea to have a general template for the dates. If it were only a 12 page calendar, it would be fine to have individuals design their own date design, but say you want to find a date quickly, by flicking through, it would be a pain in the A** to have to decipher each page. I want to scan dates quickly y'know?

Sometimes people get all tricky with their dates going diagonally across the page, or in a spiral into the middle etc. Perhaps we have a thread where people vote in the general layout. example. dates across the top of the page. The rest of the page is free reign of the designer. Same place on the page for dates, but the fonts are up to you.

If your design screams to burst out of this format, then I think it is ok to have a few that break out. In my head I'm imagining an old fashioned phone dial as the weekly calendar....

Ned
02-06-2007, 05:38 AM
I think at least the overall dimensions of the date section vs. the image section should be consistent, even though we decorate it however we please...

As you say, for functionality... I'm sure they'll all come out looking drastically different and creative, nonetheless, but still perfectly useable...

Just fearing for the worse - last year's calendar we had in our office, 2 of the months (it was a 6 page calendar) had the dates scattered in no particular order on the page! Totally useless for figuring out deadlines and dates etc. Pretty, but useless!

here is a list of bizarre, oddball holidays for 2007 - note - many of the ones near the end of the year were unavailable when I looked them up... they should be added to the list soon.

SO since we're doing the calendar for 2008, not 2007, I'd recommend you google the name of the holiday and see if you can find the date it falls on in 2008.

But it's a starting point, anyway.

Jan 29 - Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day

Feb 2 - Wear Red Day
Feb 15 - Burger Lovers Day
Feb 28 - International Pancake Day

March 7 - Learn What Your Name Means Day
March 9 - Nametag Day

April 6 - Tartan Day
April 8 - trading card for grownups day

May 1 - Lei Day
May 16 - National Sea Monkey Day
May 24 - Tiara Day

May 25th - Towel Day: Towel Day celebrates the life and work of Douglas Adams, who championed the many uses of the towel in his book series/movie/radio series/movie/tv movie/breakfast cereal, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Carry your towel proudly. For more information, search Google or stop by this handy Towel Day site or even the Wikipedia entry.

June 21 - First Day of Summer

July 13 - Embrace Your Geekness Day

Aug 8 - National Underwear Day

Sept 19 - Yarrr

Oct 9 is - Leif Erickson Day

Nov 18 - Mickey Mouse Day

Dec 15 - Cat Herders Day

Fredrick - "National Pancake Day" is also known as "Shrove Tuesday", and here is the actual information from wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrove_Tuesday

The reason it gets so many giggles here on GDF is because when the boards first started, "pancake" is the word that was automatically substituted by our old forum software in place of a certain versatile four-letter swearword (that rhymes with "duck", if you know what I mean.

It is still used today (although it has to be typed in manually) to keep the tradition alive. People will say things like "what the pancake?"

Actually, there are lots of odd "inside jokes" that have developed here over the years... and most of them are explained in this thread: so, can someone explain... (http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=20842)

No deadline on choosing firsts.

Should we have a gallery of entries as we go? Or should it be a suprise only to be unvielled at the end?

Maybe we aim to finish our firsts in 1 month's time - say March 15. If you finish your first design before then, you can start on your second of course!

There are 23 of us entered now. Perhaps some of us want to do another week or perhaps some of us don't and some new people enter. If we get 2 designs each done by end of April I think it should be ok for print after that etc.

Didn't want to pressure anyone into too short deadlines - this is supposed to be fun! Sometimes it's hard to be creative under deadlines too tight. 1 month means you have a week to think about it, a week to procrastinate, a week to bang it out and a week to showcase it for crit (if you want) and revisions.

Thank crap for that! I'd have had to back out, cos we're packing up the computer I use for design in the next few days and it'll be in shipping for 5 weeks or so. I'll have access to an older version of photoshop on my mates computer when we get back to the UK though, so seeing as you're ok with 300dpi raster images I can still get my page done. Grrrr, visas suck!

Kool, I'm confused...Buda's calendar showed week #33 as being the 11th thru the 17th, but your list says wk 33 is the 10-16, my bday falls on the 17th and that's why I chose that week...?

I figured it was some kind of "what day does the week start on" confusion! Ahhh and I didn 't even notice the absence of one! No one's picked new yrs week? no one wants to do a week full of champagne and party hats and resolutions??? oh and that one night of praying to the porcelain god?

Well, me neither, buda, in fact, I've spent the last 7 new years at home with my little boy, but I remember that's how I used to spend new years! Ah, life before kids... this past year Liam (my son) and I made hats out of construction paper and toasted to kool aid (mine did have a spike of vodka, though!) and danced around the living room to his favorite cd... (the all american rejects-which I've only listened to like 40,000 times! ) we fell asleep about 10 mins after the ball dropped... At least I can honestly say I have remembered the last 7 new years!

Pick a week cap'n (there's a graphic some where with who's doing what) We're only picking one week for now, eventually if there's some left over we will double up.

Basically, just read through the threads in this section and you'll learn all the magic and wonder that is a calendar.

I don't get the logic in that. Monday is the first work day of the week. Sunday is mostly a resting day.

Can someone that starts their calendar week on a Sunday please enlighten us? All my calendars and diaries start on Monday. :D
I guess we're just accustomed to the Sunday-starting week, to the point that it does so in virtually all contexts. Nearly all our calendars start the week on Sunday. I don't know how it started or why, that's just how it is for some reason. The only things I ever see that start the week on Monday are weekly planners, where you write out all your appointments and meetings and deadlines - all that craptacular stuff.I'm basically visually trained on the Sunday starting week. A monthly calendar that started the week on Monday would really screw me up. If I had to quickly figure out what day of the week June 20th is or the exact date of the third Tuesday of August, I'd probably screw it up. If my eye sees seven boxes across a page and someone mentions Tuesday, my eye will automatically go to the third box.Frankly, I think the week should start on Monday. Monday marks the beginning of a specific unit of time in your life. You wake up on Monday morning to start the work week. Then after working for a few days, you have a couple days off to relax before starting it all over again... on Monday.Out of curiosity, is the US the only place that starts the week on Sunday? Just like we're the only ones who call football "soccer"? And the only ones not using the metric system? And the only ones who misspell "colorize" and "license"?
