I always love threads which titles such as this.
That sucks Jack. I was lucky to get my job right away, but I've really put off looking for a new one for exactly the reason you posted this thread.
Keep at it. And keep swearing it helps.

been there. Downsized twice in three years, and finally ended up having to sell my house. It's a sorry looking job market out there. :(

It makes you wish the whole world was transparent so that we can see the why's and how's of what's going on behind everything.
That way I can say with confidence, "Why was my application rejected? Oh. That's why. Snap."
Maybe I should put "good lay" in my resume...

Graphic design and prostitution. That's what I'll list my services as.

You'd have to add another set of references then. It might put your resume to two pages good or bad. Depends on your set of morals.
Jack's got a list of clients as long as my arm. :D
Just pick out the "important" ones for references, Jack.

Seriously, though, I'm dyin' over here. If any of y'all could stand to outsource something lately, let me know and I'll hook you up with a relevant portfolio.
What's your specialty, Jack?
Honestly, the only thing I outsource is Back-End stuff, or 3D, except on rare occassions.

My main specialty is photo editing. Been working with Photoshop for 10+ years and know how to do practically everything with it. Running CS2 right now. If I could do nothing but edit photos for a living, I'd be a happy boy, but I have yet to run across any such opportunity. I have a strong arts background, so I can offer a little more imagination than some photo editors for images that might require filling in blanks. I can turn a common person into a zombie, make granny more attractive than Britney Spears (God willing), yadda yadda.
My second specialty is a proficiency with Illustrator (CS2). I've gotten pretty good with it.
I've also got a working knowledge of InDesign, but could stand to learn a few things. So give me a rundown if it might require something unusual.
I should also mention I'm not too shabby at copywriting.
That's pretty much all that's worth mentioning. I'm also a decent illustrator, but I don't get a lot of call for that.
As business has been slow, I've been finding it a challenge to decide on what my core focus should be. It's been hard to identify where the money's at.

Jack, Move To California. I've been seeing TONS of jobs for photo editing specialists on the Bay Area Craigslist. Good luck man, sorry its getting tough on you, I know how that feels.
Well, I'm sorry, but I can't help you much there then, Jack, merely because these are all areas of expertise for me, so I can't send any work your way unless I get really overbooked. I can PM my email to you anyways, if you want to send a portfolio and contact.
Are you sure you don't want a list of johns? 'cause I can help you out there, y'know... :D

lol. Thanks, Ned.
I suppose I should check craigslist for a bunch of other cities and see if there's anything I could telecommute for. I'm afraid leaving Charleston's out of the question, for me. I like it too much here.

I'm sorry Jack :(
I hope things work out soon for you ((hugs))
You like it there, eh? I used to live in South Carolina, in a little place called "Mountain Rest", just up the mountain from Walhalla and Seneca. I loved the ride up and down the mountain every day, on my motorcycle, and I loved the woods. I had a large piece of land that I would camp at all the time, which was surrounded by National Forest, but was actually unowned county land, and therefore untouched (unlike the National Forest land, which is all half-logged.).
I don't blame you for loving the area, Jack. I was mostly happy in S.C., and I have very restless feet.
We raised animals there, grew Shitake Mushrooms, and I worked as an arborist around the Walhalla/Seneca area.
I also lived with the first black man to move into Mountain Rest, which you should know is entirely KKK region.

I feel for you Jack, I know jobs for us creatives can be few and far between in the south (I used to live in VERY rural areas of VA and NC) Even now, down here in Fla, its scanty sometimes. I only moved here cuz my parents are here and being a single parent, I need to be close to them. (they are terrific g-parents-my son thinks of my dad as HIS dad-they are both great). Now they are talking about moving to a small town on the coast of GA. But I have checked out work there and it looks bad. My boss just recently moved to the Fort worth area of TX and she says the GD jobs are crazy. I hear Pheonix is good too. But I know its hard to leave an area where you love. Good luck either way. Try not to get discouraged...Sometimes you can find opportunity in the least likely places. Keep looking!

*snicker* I actually enjoy the challenge of being a tree-hugging non-conformist in gun-toting, redneck klan-land. There's just not enough opportunity for true adventure left in this world. :)

*Pole* JaCkinbOx.I'd tell you to find a job in Africa, but finding a graphic design job here takes time and patience, plus the luck of a regulatory system in the industry makes it sh** to work freelance.Calif sounds like good option...All the best!I also lived with the first black man to move into Mountain Rest, which you should know is entirely KKK region.Yikes, brave man. I hear they can 'ang you by your thumbs.

Well you have a point there Ned. I could see how that would be a stimulating life....dodging bullets, avoiding lynch mobs. And I mean really a burning cross is quite an interesting visual.
