I don't get like this too often, but I am so irritated and pissed off. There is this one job I applied for which is not graphic design related but there are opportunity for doing flyers, postcards, etc., for this company. And that sounds great. The thing is I would be doing customer service in an ADULT STORE, where the pay is incredibly low but I would be getting health insurance without them taking money out of my pay every week. So, yes, I am still applying, searching and getting friggin pissed off.
I should be somewhat happy about this position because some of it is graphic design related where I could get some good pieces in it, but on the other hand, I don't want to be doing this for free labor either. WTF should I do, just do it for the pieces for the portfolio etc? Now, there is opportunity for raises, but I have to work there a total of 3 months before I get the raise and the health.
I am so beside myself and just had to vent. So, how is everyone doing?

Sarah... think of one thing. Can you actually show this stuff in your portfolio?
you have to think about that.

good point. i wasted almost a year with a company doing graphics that paid well, but would NOT get me another job... a wasted year in employability terms.

Ya! defjoe has a great point. You can work for the porn empire of the world but will you be willing to show that in your portfolio when you go to get that creative director position at Sears?

I don't know. I was educated by eastern europeans, and so my stuff was pretty racy, but I still had it in there. I also rotated it out when I interviewed at several conservative employers (i.e. large baptist church) Some of the more liberal employers got a kick out of it, and even though I wasn't hired they included in their follow up letter that I was great to interview and my work was smart and unique.

Personally, I've always hated snapping necks whether professionally or 'for Pleasure'. It makes a very ugly sound, makes one feel a little sick inside (even when it is for Uncle Sam) and is something that simply cannot be undone.
I recommend snapping one's own knuckles. It's mighty satisfying!
Plus, many's the interviewer is hoping for a glance of ankle in a portfolio. It's important to provide that outlet for office-bound voyeurs - Do them a favor and spice up those portfolios. You'll get noticed, respected for your daring and garner a lot more job offers!

even if you dont get portfolio pieces out of it, its a paycheck and expereince. If you can't fulfill those needs elsewhere at the moment, then like they say, love the one your with.
similar story: My friend is a really good flash designer. She works from home so certain options are limited. She has been doing alot of porn sites and getting paid very well to do it. She doesnt use them in her portfolio but she has made good money and also learned alot from it.
Doesnt really matter what other people think anyways. You're just a designer. Who do you think airbrushes all the nipples out of the sears catalog anyways?
p.s. send me samples!!! :P

Sarah, I think it would be dangerous for you to work at an adult store.
Nevermind the experience you'd get, that's like dangling fresh meat in
a pool full of sharks.
There are other jobs.

Sarah, been a while since we heard from you, though I don't think you'll like working in an adult store I just want for you to ask some questions of them (objectively.)
How serious are they for doing the brochures and flyers, are they going to pay you extra for them or just say its part of the job. That could mean designing for a rate thats laughable. your better than that, and yet I know the design jobs are few and far between, I was extremely lucky and happy to land this one at Vistaprint.
Also are they going to provide you with the software and hardware for this, or you doing the work at home (off the clock)
and finally, customer service sucks...retail sucks too. I've done both for 7 years, I think in an adult store it would make me feel even worse, for reasons that need not be said
- Everyday, all the time, without fail!
I agree with Keyare, your like baite for the sharks!

I'm with Key and Benjo on this one Sarah.
I think you already know what you want to do...so why don't you ever trust your first instinct??
I say forget the job...you can get flyer and postcard jobs just about anywhere! They are the easiest design jobs to find aside from biz cards.

I think it depends. I really don't see why you can't put something that is alittle risky in your portfolio. It would not be anything too too out there, but enough to just add alittle spice I guess.

Sarah...
as you have heard from many people in this forum... it is hard to get a job especially if your not as experienced. also we have talkede about how employers suck and how poeple suck. so you having something porn related in your portfolio might not turn you off to some potential employers (like me I see it as a plus) you do run a HIGH risk of not getting a job because of it. Why even take that chance?

I guess I am taking the risk because I am finding it quite difficult to get into the field, so whatever work I can get out of this would be some kind of experience. Now, I am still looking and applying, but I guess I am willing to take whatever I can get. I have been so tempted to apply to graphic design jobs as wanting to intern, and that just plan sucks but heard you get alot out of it. So, that might be my last resort.

Do both....be an intern and work at the porn place. If you like it, you and I can market the dildos that I make, and we can start our own company!
OR
You can work at the porn place, but to simulate the internship, you can work for sex instead of money!
F**k I'm awesome.
