I'd totally go with Porcelain. Buda's right, it's hot.
Man, if any one had warned me when I went into design that one day I'd find myself looking at a font and need a cold shower, well, I'd probably have done something else.

Gary, you might want to look at fonts that are in OpenType format, some of them have some fancy swashes that aren't in the default set, but make the swashes accessible to you if you select that as an option. For example, Bickham Pro, with swashes turned on (no pun intended):

Yeah, I really like them (of course, in context). What I love about OpenType is the whole contextual alternates and swash abilities, provided the font has that stuff built in.
Amazingly, Bickham comes with the Creative Suite, I think it's a lovely font, swash on and swash off. :)
ooooh, I do have bickham lol (I use 2 computers, only one has the suite installed). how do you do that swash thing now?

Choose Bickham Pro, then (depending on the program, in InDesign, it's in the character palette, I'm guessing it's in the same spot for the other two), choose the triangle flyout menu, OpenType options, and select swashes.
Mind you I'm on a Mac, so it might look different on your system in terms of the menus and options thingies.

Can't find the OpenType options on the flyout. Maybe I don't have the full version? Mine is called Bickham Script Pro Regular.

Just tried it. I have Bickham Script Pro Regular and it worked fine in Indesign CS2 (and, as I vaguely recall the options were the same on CS1). Are you sure you're looking in the right place?
Open the character palette (Window -> Type & Tables -> Character) and click the little arrow on the palette for the flyout menu. In the flyout menu is a submenu called "OpenType." From that, select swashes.

I focused too much on the how-to, so I didn't notice it was InDesign, and not Illustrator. Worked fine in InDesign. Looking good, very classy. Turning on Distcretionary Ligatures can make it even swoshier.

To really get the best flexibility out of Bickham in Indy, use the Glyphs palette. The very top of the list of the "Show" options is "Alternates for current selection." This is one I couldn't live without for fancy OpenType fonts, or even swashes in Garamond italics.
If you turn on swashes or contextual alternates in the OpenType menu, you get a kitchen sink approach that works fine for many situations, but in dealing with something like Bickham, where there are anywhere from three to more than a dozen alternates for any given character, upper or lower case, various ligatures, etc., the Glyphs palette is the only way to go.
For all you fellow fancy type freaks, the one I've been drooling over lately is this one:

Well, you can do it in Illy, too, but it's a slightly different process. You need to open the Window->Type->OpenType palette (or, if you already have the character palette open, it will be the third tab in that group). From the flyout menu of the opentype palette, click Swash.

02-22-2007, 07:43 PM
Further note: Illy also has the Glyphs palette, with the same Alternates for Current Selection option.
In both palettes, you have to scroll up to find this option. For obscure (or possibly hysterical) raisins, it's not visible when you first click the drop-down. It's only selectable when you have a character or valid character pair selected with the type tool.
WARNING: Use of the Glyphs palette can be highly addictive. Symptoms include red eyes, lack of sleep, weight loss, and sudden outbreaks of hysterical laughter at inappropriate moments.

Biggest problem I have from using the glyphs palette is that I seem to have developed this bizarre, obsessive need to look up all kinds of unlikely unicode characters, and find out exactly what they are.
Alan G
02-22-2007, 09:19 PM
Yep. Addictive. In only a few short weeks I went from social glyph hunting to finding excuses to look up glyphs to looking for new glyphs at home, at work, in Starbucks... I promised myself I would always practice safe glyph exchange, but it's been close, a few times. Still, I only have 49,873 unicode characters to go, so it won't last forever.

Nice, but not nice for my eyes and lack of sleep. But one thing is annoying me a little bit, the glyph-window is way to wide, I just want to have it as a pane in my apperance window at the right of the screen, but it drags the appearance menu right (outside of the screen) aswell, so some of the options are no longer visible until I drag the menu to the left again.

On the subject of Porcelain, have the rest of you checked out Misprinted type (http://www.misprintedtype.com/), the website of the guy who designed it? There are a bunch of free fonts (http://www.misprintedtype.com/v3/fonts.php) there - mostly grunge stuff.
Plus, it's just kinda cool.

Chopin-Script is a direct rip-off of Polonaise by URW.
http://www.myfonts.com/search?search%5Btext%5D=polonaise
I see it says "public domain" at DaFont now, but years ago I wrote whoever had put it on there and he sent me to Polonaise if I wanted to use it commercially.
