looks good Kool.
Is there a specific layout/placement for the month or is that going to be part of the "up to you" formatting?

OK, one more thought. Since we are planning on reselling these, what are the guidelines on using stock photography or stock images? Is it allowed? I plan on doing something original but I thought it should be brought up.

That is a good point...I have no idea! Perhaps those using stock photography should contact that photographer and let them know this is charity project?
Thanks Kool for setting this up.

Not that I'm a professional photographer, but if someone is interested in using my picture(s) for this charity calender, feel free to contact me.
You can see some of my pictures here (http://foto.no/cgi-bin/bilder/vis_fotograf.cgi?brukerid=21885).
Another thing: wouldn't it be nice to have an Illustrator template so that there are no room for doing anything wrong?

I can create the templates, if people would like. Kat, I can do one for Photoshop as well.

Should there be crop marks on the templates?
urstwile
02-21-2007, 01:32 AM
Hmm, good question. I can easily put crop marks on for both file formats, as a separate layer, and then they can be deleted if they're not required.
How about a set of guide lines showing the Bleed and a set for the inner "background only" area. :)

Good idea, Kool. :)
What the heck is that called anyway, that 1/4 inch area inside the edge where your not supposed to put anything but background? Kind of the "anti bleed". I've been drawing a blank all day. I guess I've been out of pre press too long. :)

I call it safety area :)
urstwile
02-21-2007, 02:28 AM
I call it safety as well.
The templates are done, one in Illustrator and one in Photoshop.
To save on file size, the Photoshop version is in 72 dpi, RGB, so you'll need to change the resolution to CMYK and the dpi to 300. The Illustrator file is saved as version 10.
You can download them here: templates.zip (http://koolsplace.com/images/templates.zip).
Also, let me know if the templates are unclear in any way. Here's a screenshot of the Photoshop version, the Illustrator file is set up similarly.

The red is the bleed, the black is the trim and the blue is the safety area.

Should we stick with a consistent width on the dates on the right side?
Thanks for the template urst! You're da moon!

isn't the black the safety? The line between the black and red is the trim.

I figured that was the flexible part, as long as they're on the right hand side, so I didn't include the date positioning.

The guide that touches the black is the trim (1/8 inch in from the bleed, which is red). The guide that touches the blue is the safety (1/4 inch from the trim).
The document was set up to to the width and height of the bleed.
Nice, thanks urstwile. http://home.comcast.net/~rnick9/koolsmiley.gif

I always thought the bleed should be outside the canvas. Is that me being a complete moron?

When I worked pre-press I always preferred the bleed to be outside the canvas, it had to do with placing and centering in Quark. But it doesn't really matter as long as it's there. http://home.comcast.net/~rnick9/koolsmiley.gif

I work with bleed outside the canvas. I hate when people give me an A4 page with a business card in the middle. OK hate is a strong word...I don't like it when people give me an A4 page with a business card in the middle.

I've discovered that certain places actually put the bleed inside the canvas. For example Modern Postcard.
For a Photoshop file, the bleed needs to be included inside the canvas.
Inside outside, we'll make it work as long as it's there LOL.
Templates have been moved to a permanent home and I changed the links to reflect their new location. http://home.comcast.net/~rnick9/koolsmiley.gif

Sorry if we have already made a decision on this, but.... are we "signing" or putting a web site / e-mail address on our art? Position? Type size?

Damn, good question. I know we mentioned this but then it got forgotten. :p
How about:
Forum name, Real Name (if you wish), Website, E-mail (if you wish).
All on one line at the bottom just inside the safe area, in whatever font & size you wish but no larger than 12 pt.
I added this to the layout in the first post so you can see what I mean. http://home.comcast.net/~rnick9/koolsmiley.gif

True. I don't think it was as much as we hoped for.
We should start brainstorming for a new project, but maybe one that isn't so time/date critical. It would mean that not only that the deadline being easier, but people would buy the product throughout the year. People are not likely to buy a calender this time of year so that's where our sales are hurting.
Let's think of something that is cheap to reproduce and has a timeless value to it.
