ok i'm taking a survey, just out of my own interest. what is everyone's favorite font out there? and let's not all say, "it depends what i'm using it for". just pick your favorite, or two if you must. although i suppose it would be good if you let us know what you primarily like it for, (ie print design, web design, logos, etc?) it would be really cool if you could post a sample too so we can all see, especially if it's not a common one. thanks.

I guess i'll get the ball rolling, i think my flavor of the month for some time has been futura medium. it's just so clean and pointy, with the nice round "o". i put it on a little background to spice it up a bit.

Well, since you already picked Futura, I'm going to have to go with Eurostile (http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/linotype/eurostile/). I've always had a soft spot for it. It's got this awesome futuristic feel to it, but it's still fairly readable. I mean, maybe not large blocks of text readable, but you can certainly get away with smaller blocks of text.

It is, without doubt, the font that the cyborgs will use when they take over the world.

(Microgramma, I suppose, is fine, but it's been sullied by its association with Star Trek...)

I've always loved the non-ITC version of Kabel (small x-height and large ascenders) and Berkeley Oldstyle.

urstwile, i was just down in san diego the week before last with some friends. we drove down from the city for the weekend. it was a really good time, some cool bars in PB area. and the zoo was amazing, my only complaint was that those moving walkways only went uphill instead of covering the entire zoo, so that i could see everything without walking. we were a little dissapointed because we were looking forward to chilling on the beaches a bit or some sort of fun in the sun since it was supposed to be in the high 70s low 80s there, a nice break from the 60's that we get in the bay this time of year, and there ended up being a cold snap that weekend and it wasn't really any warmer in san diego. we still had alot of fun though, i'll have to get some bar recommendations from you next time i head down that way.

Sure, let me know next time you're in the area.

Our rainy season hasn't kicked in either, it's been a weird San Diego winter. The last several months have been almost San Francisco like in temperature. It's supposed to rain again later this week. Odd for San Diego, the weather's been almost illegally irregular.

oh yeah, kabel is nice. i'd really like to create my own font in the vien of kabel or futura wide for use on my stuff, it's so classy and clean, it goes really well with a particular bold style that i've been working on. i haven't played with any font creation software, but back in the day i used to hand-letter custom fonts like a madman so i don't think i'd have too much trouble.

Glad to see I am in good company.

I love Futura, I'm a little over Eurostyle now because I went through a phase where I used it for everything. Kabel is used on all Budafist stationery :D I have a history of overusing fonts I think are wonderful (at the time).

The Rotis family is getting quite a bit of use these days by me.

Myriad, it's just nice and simple.

Its something you can make as boring as you want or as exciting as you want.

Worst font = comic sans :S

i'd be interested to see times new roman made super exciting. i guess there is something to be said for purism though. and yes comic sans is the bane of my existence. my ears bleed when clients come to me with things mocked up in word using comic sans. why not just make your logo as trite as possible, we'll write your company name in comic sans, underline it with swooshes, and put flames around it. tada! my older brother is a tatoo artist, and i liken it to when people come to him and ask for a butterfly or a fairy. he says everytime someone asks for a fairy he's tempted to just tatoo the words "UNORIGINAL" on their forehead and throw them out of the shop.

While I wouldn't call it exciting per se, I do use Times New Roman for one particular client. They're an upscale but fun clothing boutique; their logo is a rhodamide red hand-drawn-by-a-kid-with-a-crayon bee (sounds gross and horrifying, but it really does work for them) and having the font in black Times just really popped and created a particular look that really suits them.

I've never got a tatoo despite loving them because my tastes change so much over time that I know I'd end up covered head to toe. The only thing I have been genuinely tempted to do is have "Made in Great Britain" tatooed on the sole of my foot, but that must hurt like hell!

Franky, that would be a cool idea for a tatoo, especially if you got it done so that it looked like it was a stamp my brother has said that the bottom of your foot is one of the most painful places to get a tattoo. i never got one for the same reason, i don't want to be like one of those big tough guys that now has to live with a tattoo of yosimiti sam or the tazmanian devil in a biker helmet on their arm for the rest of their life. i've considered getting my family crest, or maybe a medicine wheel, i can't see how a family heritage thing would ever go out of style. mainly what stops me now is that my wife sort of wants a tattoo also, and her tastes change every few years, she used to want a dragon, now she wants something else, so i know if i get one she'd get something that she'd regret later- and i can't let that happen. if my brothers agreed to get matching one's i'd probably go ahead with the family crest anyway though.

perhaps this will inspire me to start a "what tattoo would you get" thread.

Any inhouse designers here ever thought of deleting every instance of Comic Sans on the computers in their company?

No one uses comic sans here. All the sales people don't do any of their own typesetting and the quoting software they have they can't choose fonts. That's the way it should be.

Then you get my dear mother who is very high up in a goverment agency using comic sans for her work email signature. I told her off though. Now she uses Trebuchet. I think she really saw the light!

I'm becoming quite fond of VAG Rounded... this font has a bit of history as it was designed as the corporate typeface for VW (used from the late 70's to early 90's. It's also what stares up at me everyday from my keyboard - Apple has used this font on all their keyboards over the last 10 years or so. It's got nice readable form that feels casual but not comical or childish.
