Hi all, I have a slightly annoying issue with Acrobat Distiller 7.0.
Whats happening is when I produce artwork all images being used are 300 dpi and the artwork is all set up for pre-press etc.

I create a PostScript file from Quark Xpress 6.52 with all Quark's output settings at 300dpi or above. As far as I can work out the .ps file is a high resolution PostScript. The problem starts when I distill the .ps file using Acrobats built in settings PDF/A-1b:2005 (CMYK) which is or high resolution PDFs. When I forwad on the artwork to whoever they're saying that the pictures inside PDF is low res at 150dpi? Any ideas what I can do or what I'm
doing wrong?

Cheers all!

Are they scaling the file (ie are you working at 1/2 size in Quark?)

No I always work at 100%.
I have to because they are adverts, and if i was to send out an advert at a reduced size the publication would run with it.

I would double check your settings in Distiller and make sure they are indeed set at 300dpi. Select the setting you need and go to the menu "Settings->Edit Adobe PDF Settings". Maybe your image settings got changed/corrupt somehow.

That was the first thing I checked, it does the same on 3 other macs too so I doubt they would be all corrupt would they?

I'm still thinking it has something to do with Quark.
Were the images scaled up in the document or are the images at 100% final size in photoshop before placeing in Quark?

No, if anything, they've been scaled down to about 75% just to be on the safe side. Maybe there's a website somewhere which has a list of ready-made distiller options but I'm not sure how different these are going to be from doing it your self or using the standard ones that come with distiller.
Maybe I've missed a check box somewhere or something?

Double check the resolution of the graphics by openning your pdf and select the "touch up object tool" in Acrobat. Select a problem graphic with the object tool and the graphic should open up in Photoshop. Check the resolution.

I've just tried that, and your absolutely right.
When the image opens up in Photoshop the dimension is correct although the dpi is way down to 125dpi, even though my original image is the same dimension but at 300dpi, any suggestions?

I've seen this same problem posted somewhere before and I'm trying to locate it.

Thanks. I've just found a check box in Quark under PRINT - OPTIONS under the pictures setting, a CHECK BOX which is labelled FULL RESOLUTION TIFF OUTPUT. I have just checked this and when I edit the PDF from Acrobat as you suggested before, it opens up in PHOTOSHOP and yup it displays it at 300dpi so I think we've nailed it. Do you think this is what was causing it to be lower resolution?
