Please don't laugh, but I am using In Design for the first time (on my own with no help) and I can NOT figure out how to place an image. I have drawn an image box with the rectangle frame tool. Then file / place and browse to the image I want. When I double click on the image, it just fills the frame completely black. Its driving me nuts ... and I'm feeling stupid.

try not drawing the image box first.

Go place > browse and select, then click where you want the image to be placed, and ID should place the image with a properly sized box for you. You can resize (down but not up so as not to lose resolution) proportionally by holding "shift" while you resize.

Hi. Yes I do that ... but all I get is a completely black image or box. The image doesn't appear at all.

What type of file format are you trying to place?

Got to View: Overprint Preview.

What do you see now?

I'd guess the problem's most likely your display performance setting. It's under View -> Display Performance. If it's set to "Fast Display," then that's your problem. "Typical Display" will give you a low-res preview of your image, and "High QUality Display" will give you a full-res version. Which you want to use depends on how fast your computer is and how many images you're placing.

Does your image have black in it? Is it much larger than the bounding box you are creating? InDesign image boxes have two parts to them. The bounding box is basically like a mask in Illustrator. Your image gets placed within that bounding box you created at 100%. If you choose the open arrow and click on the box, you will see the image boundary outlined in a brown line. This is the actual image. InDesign always places the images at 100% so if it's large, it will only show a piece of it through the bounding box. You can resize the image by selecting it with the open arrow (brown outline). If you do skip drawing the box first and just go straight to place image, after selecting your image it will come back with page icon by the cursor. Click and it will place the image at 100% with a 100% bounding box the same size as the image.
