We have to move from the US to the UK fairly sharpish due to the company my husband works for going under. We have approx two weeks to get our asses and all of our crap back to the UK and find new jobs. If there is anyone from the UK on this board that can offer sound advice for GD job searching in Britain then I would be very grateful. I'm a jack of all trades. Although I have website construction under my belt I do prefer print work and the only thing that I really don't like the idea of is prepress (fixing other peoples files isn't the slightest bit appealing), but not having much choice I would still rather that than wait tables. Thanks for listening peeps. Right, I'd better get packing

Wow that's very sudden. All the best. I think things like this happen for a reason though. Hope the move is a good one.
Do you know how long you are going to be there for? Indefinately?

That's awful.
Good luck, and I hope it works out okay.

It sucks like the Dyson robo-whore 3000, but as long as the family is healthy and well I have an insane amount of confidence that we can cope. We came to the US three years ago with two suitcases and no money and we've done ok, despite two surprise babies. I'll just have to learn to deal with an 8 hr time difference with most of you lot now :D
edit: 12hrs with Budda and Hewligan though ;)

did the two surprise babies sneak over in your two suitcases? they really should have caught that at the airport.
i wish you the best of luck on your new job hunt and hope you find something that really suits you, but just in case don't totally overlook the possibility of going into business for yourself. sounds like you have the experience and skill. it's a scary road, i won't lie, but really rewarding.
good luck with the move, and i hope you don't find any more surprise babies in your luggage.

It's not too bad living with a time difference to everyone else. It just means I have an awful lot to read in the morning, and tend to get a lot of work done in the afternoon ;)

Is your family all in the UK? If they are, that could be a good thing right? With you babies and all.

Yep, the fam is in the UK. Both sets of grandparents and one set of great grandparents for the kids, plus a lot of close mates, so that is the good part of the move. We struck out on an adventure three years ago not knowing that we'd soon be a family, so it'll be wonderful to have the kids around all those people that are so important to us.
It's just a bit crazy to have no savings and no safety net and nearly no time to up and relocate and get going again. I was just remarking to the husband last week how nice it was to not be moving house this year (we have moved house february every year since 2003!) Luckily the kids are so young that it shouldn't upset them badly.
Thanks for all the kind words m'dears

Yes, I really hope you can get comfy and settled soon after. That's a big move, especially with two kids in tow. Good luck, Frank!

Good luck! Moving does suck. I'm rootin' for you! You guys must be pretty resourceful though to have come this far! I'm sure you'll do fine. It's great that you guys have family and friends already established.

whereabouts in the uk are you coming to?

Initially we'll be going back to North Wales to get over Jet lag and see our extended family, then there's the possibility that my husband can scrape together a few months work in his feild in Manchester (where we spent 8 years and have lots of close mates) then it's just going to be down to where the work is. We're pretty flexible and feel we can make a go of things anywhere from Dundee to St Ives, we just have to be doing something we like.
