Hey everyone, seriously i am in the worst procrastination slump of the year (granted we're not far into the year, but still.)
So, if you're checking out the off topic section, it probably means you're wasting time like me. If so, riddle me this: aside from being starving artsist and saving up for name brand mac n' cheese, what else are you saving up for?
I was saving up for a cintique, but I ended up buying a 67 Continental instead. Not exactly a business investment, but I've always wanted one and couldn't resist when I found a good deal. So now it may be awhile before I get a cintique, or maybe a cheaper tablet. Seems like it would save so much time. For now I'm still using pencil and a scanner.
What is everyone else saving their hard-earned dollars for?

you work on cars yourself? i wish i did, i'm something of a classic car enthusiast, but i don't know much about working on them. my wife had a 73 beetle that we sold recently, and we got a few offers from people wanting to buy it to turn into a dune buggy (it was in Michigan, so there's better dunes than decent beaches) but we refused to sell it to someone who was going to cut it up. it was my wifes car in high school so we had to many memories in it to see it chopped. i have always wanted a dune buggy myself though, my friend had one growing up and it was an absolute blast, although slightly deadly the way we drove it.

man i'm starting to regret starting this thread, you guys are making my life sound pretty lame. i'm just starting to learn to surf after moving to bay area, debating whether to get into surfing, or windsurfing or what. i'm thinking about surfyaking, which i guess is pretty new but looks cool www.surfyak.com . i'm into kayaking anyway so there'd be less of a learning curve. i also really like skiing, but i've only ever skiied (sp?) in michigan, which is pretty lame. I'm excited about skiing some of the mountains here in california, but we're waiting to go until my wife's latest basketball injury heals (torn acl). but i'm nowhere near good enough to go heli-skiing. you guys are saving up to dune buggy across france and jump out of helicopters and i'm like, "i'm going to buy some new pencils!"

i did stop procrastinating by the way, i finished up what i was working on just moments ago. it was a website interface design, which i hate doing, which is why i was procrastinating. wierd how everyone has their own thing they prefer, logos, websites, layout, etc. Someday I hope to have enough steady clients to just not accept web work, or maybe have some perminant subcontractors who handle it.

Costa Rica is amazing. I was there about 7 years ago. The food, scenery and people are simply phenomenal.
I'm saving up for a couple more trips to Texas (I kind of want to move to Ft. Worth)
I'm also headed to Kansas in April, Chicago in September and Nashville next fall.
I'm also saving up to put hardwood floors in my townhouse.

Most of my family's been there so I cant wait. Have you looked at your credit card statements lately? The interest rates are through the roof! I called them up a few months back ago to get them to drop my rate, A few weeks later they sent me a letter stating that i was approved for a rate drop. I looked at my most recent bill and it was at 18%!!! I have had the card for 7 years - never a late or missed payment - and have impeccable credit. I can only imagine what my rate was before the drop
I am saving for a new mac pro this year. I just read an article yesterday saying that both 10.5 and CS3 will be released simultaneously at the end of next month. As frankster would say "CHRIST ON A BIKE" Hopefully some big freelance checks clear in time :D

I went with a church right out of highschool. We had formed a band and played multiple gigs in and around San Jose to help raise funds for their local church.
I'd say try and befriend the locals (it's not too hard since they're such friendly people) and get them to show you around. You can go to downtown San Jose which is very touristy and americanized (malls with laser tag, dozens of gift shops, etc) but I'd try and get out and about. I turned 18 when I was down there (local drinking age) and they took my out to some place that was on the outskirts of the mountains for my first beer. It was an Imperial, it was ok, nothing spectacular, but it was fun having my first legal beer before I turned 21 ;o)
Don't let the guards in front of the banks freak you out. They have big guns and look scary but I guess that's just how they roll down there.
Also make sure to drink Coke down there, it is so much better than coke in the states.
You absolutely need to go up the mountain and try the white water rafting. That was an experience I won't forget.
I could go on and on about that trip, it was more amazing than I could describe.

We bought a house in November. Now we're saving for a new kitchen ceiling. That's our first order of business with the house. It has one of those awful suspended ceilings. I hear they're pretty easy to take down and replace. Here's hoping cause we'll be doing the work ourselves.

leftbrain, my brother vacationed in iraq for a year and didn't really like it, almost died twice. he says don't go. he paid for his vaca by being a field medic, i guess not much of a deal. they did give him his own hummer though to drive his injured buddies around in the back in. he didn't have a good time there so he came home, but he got invited on another vacation, this time to afghanistan. we're expecting him home inside of a month! stupid involuntary vacations.
so i want to get in on this costa rica conversation. i'm doing a simple website for a resort down there, and it's mostly in exchange for week's stay in their condos/resort. it's not as much of a resort as jackimalyn's family's resort, those were some impressive photos. but i figure most of what i'd really be wanting to do would be out a bit more in nature anyway, rafting or kayaking or mountain climbing or something anyway. although it never hurts to come home to a nice hot tub at the end of the day. colonel if you have anymore info on the rafting you did i'd definetly be interested to hear it, sound really cool. jacki, if you go anytime soon be sure to post your adventures on here, i probably won't be going until later this year so it'd be really cool to talk to you a bit about your trip before we go.

cornfed, the suspended ceilings are easy to take down, so you're in luck there. replacing them can be another story though, putting drywall up on a ceiling isn't fun, but it's doable with a few people. you'll likely need more hands than just two of you, so here's hoping you have some friends who really like you. It's not too expensive of a process, but it'll take more time than you think, everything in construction always does. do you know what's underneath? are there horizontal floor joists from the floor above? i wonder why they put in a suspended ceiling. if you're in a one story and you're really lucky, maybe they put in a suspended ceiling because there are no horizontal joists, and you can just drywall the vaulted roof joists and have a really nice vaulted kitchen ceiling. of course if you do that you'll have to re-insulate, either with R30 fiberglass or spray foam.
I'm fixing a house up in michigan to hopefully sell. i haven't worked on it since october, i have to head back in a month or so to finish the thing up by spring. i did pretty much all the work myself, a complete tear out and remodel. i added vaulted ceilings among other things, it was alot of work but really worth it, it looks amazing. good luck with your kitchen. just be careful not to get the "might as well" disease, it can be pretty contageous. I worked in finished carpentry for about 5-6 years, primarily remodeling kitchens and baths, and i've seen alot of people get themselves carried away to replacing the whole kitchen just starting out fixing a cabinet door or something. i know i got it remodeling my house in MI, i ended up with a way bigger project than i expected. One little thing i would suggest adding to the project if you haven't thought of it, is recessed can lighting. it's fantastic in kitchens, you won't know how you ever lived without it.
good luck, and if you have a question when you get started, i'm not the world's most renouned remodel expert, but i've replaced a few ceilings in my day so maybe i can help.
cornfed
02-22-2007, 09:36 PM
It's actually got the drywall up already. It's a two story house and theres ductwork under the suspension. So we'll have to reroute the ductwork somehow and raise up the light fixtures. I think it was constructed this way. The house was built in 1974 and from what I understand a lot of houses had this at that time. It was supposed to be attractive. It's ugly as all get out. I really love the rest of the house, but the kitchen ceiling has got to go!! There's no way I'll get the "might as well" syndrome. I'm not looking to replace cabinets or anything for a while. I want to get settled in and then decide how I want to remodel things. Plus I have a kid going to college in 4 yrs and another going in 5 yrs. I won't do any major remodeling until they are off. Cause then my 4 year olds bedroom will become a sitting room for my room and she'll move upstairs!! No point in doing all that until some of the kids have moved.

colonel if you have anymore info on the rafting you did i'd definetly be interested to hear it, sound really cool.
There's at least one company if not a handful that have these trips where you take a bus from the city up the mountains to the rain forest. You stop at a small resort/restaurant area for some breakfast and instructions. You then take the bus to the starting point. You have options on how intense of rapids you want to do. They have the beginner deal where you essentially head down some level 1 and 2 and maybe 3 rapids. You have a guide in your boat that helps to steer but its really up to your group to stay afloat.
If you want to you can go to the more intense level 3 rapids and level 4 and 5 rapids but what we did is stop right before that at a clearing and have lunch and then the bus takes you back down the mountain.
If you go, wear sunscreen ultra to the max. I loaded up my arms, face and neck with waterprood SPF 15 and I still got absolutely fried. The sun must be extra intense up in the mountains.

No his vacations were more involuntary. I mean he joined the army voluntarily during peacetime, so i guess it's not like he was drafted, but he certainly doesn't want to be in afganistan right now. he doesn't complain at all though, he just says it's his job and not much else about it. after he came home from iraq he got enrolled in college fulltime and got engaged, and he was called back up to go to trashcanistan and had to pull out of school mid-semester and lose his credits, and postpone his wedding, so I know he wasn't super thrilled. we'll be glad to have him home, and he'll be over his contract limit of deployment time in a 5 year period, so hopefully he won't be getting called back soon. who knows though, it certainly wouldn't be the first time i've heard of the military breaking their end of a contract.
so i'll let you know how costa rica goes. what is the zipline tour? do you seriously just go down a series of ziplines through the rainforest? that sounds pretty damn cool.

We are attempting to save up enough to
1. Get a car to replace the junker out front which won't start
2. Fix the car that I ran off the road into a post (very narrow road, and a 7-up truck)
3. Replace the front door which has a 1 inch gap at the bottom
4. Replace the shingles on the roof, two are missing (blew off in high wind)
5. Replace the surround and probably the dry wall behind the tub which is nasty.
6. Replace the carpets in the house with hardwood
7. Replace the linoleum tiles which slide ever so slowly (the moron who installed them must not have swept the baseboard before slapping them down)
8. Replace the AC unit with a central HEAT AND Air unit (currently the house has baseboard heat, and 2 of 6 units are dead)
9. General aesthetic home improvements
10. Ski trip to anywhere, even Indiana. (I haven't gotten to Ski for 6 years and it's very sad to me, I used to ski every Friday in the winter with my family)
Maybe we should just sell the house. :)

you could water ski on lake michigan... but its quite rare for it to freeze over. They could also ski on a hill... we do have those up here. By me, all of lake michigan thats frozen is the marina and its pretty much all water beyond the break wall. There were some massive waves the other day with the storm that came through... you could have skipped the skiis and surfed!

boyne isn't too terrible in michigan, and there's a few halfway decent manmade slopes in northern michigan. actually if you're near boyne this st. patrick's day you should definetly go ski there- they have a huge st. patty's party where they lax up their policies on alcohol on the hills. you can have anything that's not glass bottles. sooo, we usually make two handles of homemade vodka glee wine, take a few thermos's of irish coffee, and some flasks of whisky. people are skiing down the hills with cases of beer under their arm, some people usually end up skiing down the hill naked or in bikinis by the end of the day. they used to give out free beer at the beer tent they have set up atop one of the hills, and they give out free hot wine at the bottom. anyway, it's a ridiculous good time, but you have to go early cause they close the hill at around 6 i think to make sure no one dies.
