Hey guys....i'm new to this and hoping i'll get a response :-/
Okies, question:
I have a master page in quark and want to use that page repeatedly to create a book, i.e invoice pad. though, i need to add page numbering to it.....
so without actually setting up 1000 master pages and adding numbering, does anyone know how to/or of you can, print the one page 1000 times and add page numbering to it???
Cheers me dears
nik :)
Sorry but I don't have quark on this machine and can't remember the short cut but the principle is as follows....
on your master page - create a text box type in 3 numbers to allow you format and set the text - now go the help menu and look up auto page numbering - it will be a simple options insert something or other. once in place delete the other three numbers.
Now when you create a new page it will number its self

You mean auto page numbering...be back in a jiff...
I dont know - I wouldn't have thought that the page numbers would change as they are printed - I understand what you want to do but I think you may have to create 1000 pages from the one master to get the page numbering to work.
Let me know if you work out a way of doing it - you may need to ask a professional printers how they do it.

cheers samakimoto........hmmm, well yeah, but i know how to do it if i have all the pages layed out. (so you can see them in the page layout window) but just dont really have much of a clue how to print the same page repeatedly and number it.....
I know there's some kind of book 'format' you can create, and when you save it the file icon looks like....i'll try to attach.......

How do I set up automatic page numbering?
You can set up text boxes that contain special characters on your master page to automatically number the pages in your document. Because automatic page numbers are updated as pages are moved around the document, automatically generating them ensures accuracy in your documents.
Display the appropriate master page.
Using the Text Box tool, draw a text box and position it on the master page where you want the page number to display on the document pages.
Click to place the Text Insertion bar in the text box and press Command+3 (Mac OS) or Ctrl+3 (Windows). The Current Text Box Page Number character, <#>, displays in the text box.
Use the formatting tools in the Style menu or apply the appropriate style sheet to format the page number. All document pages based on the master page will now include the correctly formatted page number with respect to section settings (Page > Section) and page position.
This came from
http://www.quark.com/service/desktop/support/techinfo/view.jsp?faq_id=219#number
I've done this before for book layouts. It should work just fine for you.
This is great cornfed - but I think the guy was after a way to set up a print run that updates the page numbers, so he could set just one page and print 1000 copies rather than having to create a large document with 1000 pages just to get the page numbers correct.

yeah that's right jam, though turns out you do use that method of numbering, but you type in the final number of how many pages you'd like (i.e 1000) in [menu bar>page>section], print out 1000 and hey presto.....they automatically number. :)
ps- I'm a Gal ;)
Thanks nikerbokerglory - does it work the same in InDesign?

ooopos, sorry, my bad, i mean, it automatically creates 1000, so all you need to do is print 1 copy :-/
inDesign, use to use it a fair bit......couldn't say tbh

To do automatic page numbering in InDesign,
Goto the Master page.
Create a text box.
Then right click (Ctrl-Click on Macs) and there will be a "Special Characters" option.
Auto Page Numbering is in there.
Hope that's what you were after.
