hi everyone.. im working on a band logo for my friend. name of band is soulcalist.
its a hip-hop/rock/soul band with 7 band members. their website is www.myspace.com/soulcalistmusic.
here are a few things i been working on throughout the day. the sound waves/bars contain 7 bars, and the stars have 7 points.
im trying to keep the logo as clean and simple as possible.
any and all feedback would be much appreciated.
thanks..

While I like the notion of the sound bars as a design element - I think they spread out your design across too great an area. You have to be careful with the gray "o" as it might be touch on some limited color applications and sometimes look like a "doughnut"?
I think your strongest designs are the two in the lower left. THey are simple and seem to have a personality of their own. These designs would produce well on shirts, stickers, posters, drum heads, etc. If you consider all of the possible applications of the design, along with the many different printing techniques - these designs would be easy to reproduce - consistently - by many vendors. - Keep experimenting - I think you're onto something.

The ones at the top made me think of this logo:

Any idea of the point of the name? Is it a take off of "vocalist", or something else? This may provide a direction...
the logo does not match the band, u need to feel the music and then design.
its look like a software logo or a speakers logo.
u should google for bands logos in the same category so u can see what im taloking about.
good luck !

funny, i thought it was a play on 'socialist'.
all you armchair psychological profilers have at it.

Being someone who works with local Fort Wayne area bands on a regular basis the logo has to portray the type of music or the vibe the band wants their audience to feel.
With a funk/hip hop/soul band the logo should flow, like you're bobbin your head... listen to some funk and hip hop while you're trying to design the logo.. it will help.
I saw socialist, too. Especially in the last 4 examples.

reminded me of CISCO:

One thing I would suggest is working with the name as one word, but dividing it visually into the two words by color, typography, or some other visual technique. When you print "soulcalist" I can see the play on words...whereas "soul calist" breaks the recognition and it takes a minute to figure it out, IMO.

Is there any reason you are so set in black and lime?

does anyone know of any good sources to view more funk/hip-hip/jazz type band logos?
i went to logopond and didnt find that much for this type of music.
i was going for a defjam/sony look. bold easy to read with a few music-hiphop/funk/jazz elements.
thank u all.

i don't really dig the arrow, & i think you have to many little things going on. (star, music notes, arrow guitar neck) try just the guitar neck & in black only. if you want to break the word with color reverse it out. try not to work in color untill you love the design. the last one is my favorite.

Have you tried a version where you remove all the bells and whistles?
Leave just the guitar neck on "soul", and the star on "calist".

Do ALL your #2's at work. Not only do you save on TP, but you're getting paid to do it!
very interesting concept... i like it... since i'm self employeed.... i pay myself to crap.

datswhutsup - The last logos you submitted, I find something almost "Goofy" to them... and not sure if the Guitar neck really gives it a hip hop feel. The only one that almost has me going is the last one where you have the fonts cut up a bit. Maybe add some grunge to it. And I'm not so wild on the star burst... reminds me too much of a penny saver ad...
Just my ideas... hope they help...

These latest versions are reading "silly, kiddie music, etc" to me, not "hip hop band". they're too fun and the arrows and music notes seem a little childish to me. Too many colors, also?

bottom one is looking good if you remove the arrows and music notes. Keep it up, so far the revisions are progressing well.

the 4th one just leave the guitar neck and the star. Take all the other stuff out and see how that looks..
