Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : CRT or LCD monitor? (space is an issue)

Hey there folks...
Just wondering what the response would be to this question...
I'm getting a monitor to go with my new G5. Space is an issue. I know the CRT's are truest with color, but I've got so little space to work with that if I used one I'd be working with it a foot from my face all day long. Should I bite the bullet and deal with the proximity issue, or is there an LCD monitor out there that'll do the job? Please, if you respond, leave your monitor preferences as well. Thanks.

Most designers will tell you to stick with the CRT, but I have a ViewSonic LCD at home that suits me fine.

Well, I've just spent 600 on the Apple 17' flat studio display. I'm hoping to scrape up the extra 600 for the new 20' cinema display. Do you think the 17' will suffice, or is the 20' really everything I hear it's cracked up to be?
PS - thanks for the reply

While the 17' is definately workable, bigger is always better. If you can afford it I say go with 20'

I used to always say no to LCD's but they have come a long way. Color consistency on the apple LCD's are very good. Sometimes preferable over a CRT as long as you have good color calibration tools for output.
The 20' LCD is great. I use a 20' cinema display myself. Definition is great and the colors are consistent. You cannot avoid the slight metallic quality of some colors on LCD, but color accuracy is not as important as consistency. Apple displays have very little drift which makes them dependable for output.
A while ago, apple LCD's were way overpriced. But now they are much more competitive. Although the Apple LCD's may not have specs as good as some other brands like NEC, BenQ, Sony, etc, the color and quality control on the Apple's are much better.

Thanks for the advice folks. I think I'm going to stick with the 17' studio apple for now. I'm just starting out and don't have the cash for a bigger one right now; maybe after I get a job. I blew my wad beefing up the CPU (G5, dual 2.0G processors, 250G hard drive, 2 Gig RAM, radeon 9800xt 256mb card) so I'll have to be happy with that. It's not the fastest or most powerful computer on the planet, but it's the best one I've ever owned, so I'm psyched.

Sounds fun! I use dual Trinitron 17' CRT monitors and I love them but they take up lots-o-space.

grats... the only way someone could get mine is from my cold lifeless fingers. Even when it dies, hopefully 30+ years from now, I will still keep it as a momento. Maybe turn it into an ornament like I did with my Quadra AV /emoticons/smile.gif

I can't imagine a monitor that big. The biggest I've used is 15 inch. Right now I have a 15 inch LCD attached to my laptop.

the office manager here said no one can get an LCD monitor until they get all the bugs worked out. then he showed me the bug crawling around in his monitor. weird! it was like a little gnat or something...
