Never posted here before, showcased this digital illo elsewhere and thought why not here as well? :D

Her name's Ember. Did this last night night as an avatar for another forum (that's why she's a static bust). I originally created her many moons ago when I was but a blossoming teen wayyyyy back when. ;) First time I ever rendered her digitally.
The joys of digital illustration. I literally was up all night and didn't even realize it, I was so engrossed.

I call that "being in the zone"... wish I could find my way there during NORMAL hours, but it's harder somehow. ;)
Very cute illo. I love her eyes.

My "zone" hours are normally anywhere between sundown to sunrise. I make sure I'm in bed before dawn. I think I'm part vampire. :p

Thankye kindly. Eyes are the windows to the soul, they say.

It's still amazes me when that happens ... one minute it's 8pm next it's 5:30am :D

Thankye. I'm weary but not nearly as tired as I should be. Maybe I'm still riding in "the zone" aftermath.

Will that be the point where I start sweating and developing the shakes, and start frantically doing a string of random projects in the middle of the night in the hopes that I can get another hit of "the zone" again? I wonder if I have to pay this time around...

You have good taste, apparently your into seacreatures? The zone is like always on for me, i still cant get it to stop. i just need a few pics to go off and i can do MAGIC wooo!

Wow..... that far ba-...? Er... nevermind, Seapony. :p
Great job! She's cute!
Cute! I want to take one home and it can live in my bathtub.
Heh... I'm nocturnal too. My most creative hours are after dark, but for some silly reason the boss expects me to be at work during the day time when the store is open.

My favorite part of illustrations that include living things are always the eyes and you nailed 'em, good job!

Haha, I just realized that. Well, technically she's a dragon (I think I pegged her as a "pygmy dragon" or some such invention at the time) but an easy pass for a sea dragon too. Funny that I didn't notice that sooner.

Y'know alot of folks feel that way in an LSD trip...or uh, so I've heard. *ahem*

Thanks. I really like when I nail that glassy look—seems to really pop out of the 2D plane whenever I apply it. I admit I'm something of a fusspot when it comes to eyes. I feel they're the most expressive feature that sometimes most emote the feelings you want to convey in your image.
Here's another little product of being in "the zone" that originally started as a goof for a friend. I dubbed him baby egghead. I mean, what else could he possible be? :D
http://home.earthlink.net/%7Earchetypeds/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/whychris.gif
This little obsession ended up consuming my afternoon. And because I must obey when "the zone" commands me, I ended up pulling an all-nighter just to meet a job deadline. And what landed me in "the zone" in the first place with this one? Fussing over those eyes. Well, naturally I had to finish the darn thing after gleefully nailing it. I'm almost positive I'm part masochist because of this. Maybe I should consider a twelve step "out of the zone" program to control my problem.
Hehe, we should start a thread about being in "the zone"...bet we'd get some doozy stories. Feel free to add your own tales and post up your "zone babies" here too, if'n ya like.

I would never ever crit on just a avatar, but as you have been so kind to comment elsewhere for myself, I will do a quickie...
Line weights need attention.
The face & body is flat but the hair & eyes aren't.
The horn is out of perspective, it looks odd.
Eyebrows are above and below hair.
+ I have to end with the old how-ism...
...where are your sketches? ;o)

Just re read my crit, and seems like I am being a bit of an arse, please be assured I am not, I just am really short on time and thought the remedies were pretty obvious, but wanted to give you come input what I would do to improve it.
I like her cheeky charm.
p.s. I am so much more productive after 12. Is it the quietness and calmness, or is just that the local has stopped serving Stella? I guess it is one of lifes mysteries...

Line weights need attention. Before replying, out of curiosity, where specifically?
The face & body is flat but the hair & eyes aren't. That was intentional. They served dual purposes, really:
1. It established the expressive eyes and layered hair as the dominant hierarchy of the piece, immediately alluring one's attention to those almost 3 dimensional features because...
2. It was late and I didn't really feel it necessary to detail the other features.;) Actually, developing her expression was my avatar's primary criteria, so mission accomplished. And considering that it was going to appear as a 100px wide format too much detail at that scale was unnecessary and likely imperceptible.
The horn is out of perspective, it looks odd.
Agreed, It's the base, it's too sharp of an angle, should've rounded it more and added some shading on the opposite side to denote more of a proper curvature.
Eyebrows are above and below hair.
Also intentional. It's a cartoon after all, so I can take some creative license here. Obscuring the eyebrows behind the hair would've made her less expressive. Again, it's final size was the main consideration.
Don't know if this'll work (taking this directly from the forum in question) but here's the avatar @ 100%:
http://www.thejapanesepage.com/images/avatars/ember100px1%5B14729%5D.gif
Different little critter at that size, no? I agree that at some point I do need to add some weight, heavier contrast and other minor tweaks to really pop it out more at that size. Just have to find the time.
+ I have to end with the old how-ism...

There were none. It's a "zone baby"...haven't you been reading? Silly.

Thanks Mitch,
I've done some thinking about your comments and you've made some good points. When I get a chance I'll try to address some of them, thanks for bringing it up.
I'm still going to leave her flat, as you can see she's just a wee little 100 px wide little thing, after all, but I will make some contrast changes to add some pop. Plus this did inspire me to create another piece, this time with her two sisters (didn't know she had sisters, didja?) So I'll put those up for a fun crit (why not, I could use the exercise). Heck if I'm feeling really masochistic I'll put it up in HOW as well so I can get a truly proper "CONCEPT...SKETCHES!!!" reaming, haha. Why oh why do I invite this on myself.
:D;)

As for addressing the problems, I thought you did that in one of your previous post... :op I remember. Came out great btw, I bet the client was quite happy. I used your "make it" logo as an example for another poster who was trying to create a similiar relationship between their graphic and letterforms. Don't remember what ultimately happened with that, though.

Yes she was cool with it, (the make it one). My web knowledge let me down on the site though.
The layout was a bit 1998. But they seemed happy.
Just working on another brief at the mo that is above yours on this forum, but I feel it is a little 'David Brent' office stylee (sorry don't know the american name of the boss in the TV show)...
But with not much budget, and shit images I am up a bit of a quandry to make it inspiring and feel I may have made it too fake with stock images and flourishes. Starting to thik I am not keeping real, as my house mate would say!

Alright Mitch, I'm gonna fix it up just because you told me to. ;) You've inspired me not to let it die. Or maybe it's that now that you've pointed out it's flaws I can't let it die...I hate being a nitpicky designer sometimes, hehe. I'll start another thread and "call you out" when I'm ready.
