I need to know how to make a gradation go all the way through a group of text. I am trying to do a black to blue on a website name, but every time I apply the gradation, it applies to each letter instead of the entirename so to speak. Im sure this is totally simple and im brain farting on it, but can someone help me out. http://graphicdesignforum.com/emoticons/frusty.gif

One way is to outline your text, copy it to another layer (below your first text layer), make a box under the copied text and fill it with your gradient. Then use the copied text on the lower layer to make a clipping mask over the gradient box. Make sure there is no fill on the original text (a stroke is okay). I just had that problem the other day. There is probably a better way.... but it works in a pinch.

Dfrag, do you text then create outlines, do you gradient and then use the gradient tool to drag the gradient across all of the letters. That will give you a smoothe gradient from the first letter to the last!
Thats it.

nope, non of the stuff I am doing is working, and it is making me mad, sometimes my illustrator will do wierd stuff when I open mac files, and im pretty sure this is the case here. I just tried, clipping mask...wont work. Tried the gradient tool....wont work. Im gonna try and copy paste everything, or just start a new doc and see if that fixes it.

Can't you just make text to outlines, select all then go under object>compound path>Make.
Your outlines will disappear but you can fill across with gradient.
