Yesterday I posted one of my "zone" babies in the Showcase, which led (somehow) into the topic of actually being "in the zone." You know, when you're so happily engrossed in a particular design project that you slipped into some pocket time warp, only to emerge dazed, confused yet oddly satisfied on the other side at the end result?

I posted two such samples here (http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=24793) and a little further along here (http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/showpost.php?p=356609&postcount=17) to give you an idea of what I'm talking about. I'd love to see some of your "zone babies" posted...maybe along with a little backstory on their creation?

C'mon, I know you've got 'em. There isn't a designer alive without a few illegitimate "zone babies" running around. Paintings, doodles, sculptures, favorite client projects, logos, digital imagery, you name it, all zone babies welcome!

:D

Just to get the proverbial ball rolling, I'll repost the illo images here (you can read their creation stories in the other thread links).

Zone Baby fun fact: I spent all night creating this but not alone. My 3 year old woke up around 2am. I could have eventually put her back to sleep but that would've meant *gasp* turning off the computer and joining her...smack in the middle of the zone!! Needless to say we both hit the hay together around 5:30am. She slept in (of course) and I still had to get up early (of course). When you're a slave to the zone...

Baby Egghead:

Zone Baby Fun fact: This was originally supposed to be a very simplefied example on applying shading and highlight techniques in illustrator for a friend. I went a bit crazy.

I suspect you'll get a lot more responses to this thread once Monday comes around, Seapony. Starting a new thread is always a challenge on the weekend, in my experience.

I'll make sure to try to bump it if I remember to on Monday.

Being more of a production person than a designer, I have to say that my zone babies would be hard to reproduce in this thread. :)

Oh come now, no special side projects even? They don't have to be work, per se (although I've always been a sucker for a well register spot and process layout job, m'self). ;) At the very least you can share some zone baby stories.

I figured as much about the response time since it's the weekend but inspiration hit me that moment. Considering my deplorable memory retention, I thought I should just do it now and get it over with.

Yeah, it's a good idea for a thread. I'll try to rack my brain for something, I know I do tend to get obsessed with things and the notion of time becomes a thing of the past (pun intended). ;)

Not too long ago- mid last year- Danger Mouse strated a thread like this, where he/she posted doodles from random sketches...

Mine are not as finished as yours Seapony, they're pencil or biro sketches in a pile of A4 printer paper bound together along one edge...

Seapony, you really have a talent for drawing eyes. The detail is lovely.

I'd love to see them all the same. Not like it's a contest. I'll post up a Wonder Woman doodle in a zone moment that I did on bristol board, too. Trust me it's exactly as advertised. ;)

I sort of remember that thread in one of my lurking moments, but couldn't find it to revive it in a search.

Thankye kindly. Refining those eyes are what led to those "zone babies" in the first place which were sort of happy accidents in and of themselves. I think it's pretty safe to say I've got the hang of the technique now. It's funny how these things evolve.

You have any zone babies of your own to contribute?

:)

you had to go setting the bar high for this one, dintcha? ;)

I find that when I'm "in the zone" it's almost like having an out-of-body experience, or like being possessed. Whenever I find the zone, I usually sit down and start writing, instead of doodling... but I s'pose I can share one of these. They're not spectacular (or finished, just an initial pencil sketch, pardon the smudges), but I sure do lose track of time when I really get into one.

Oh, and the "doodles" thread is here:

WOW.

"Not spectacular?" I sorely beg to differ. That is incredible work. And I do so love symmetrical designs, that is awesome. I can only imagine what that'll look when that's "finished."

Thanks for finding the doodle thread for me. I tried a search with sketches, I should have tried "doodle", how utterly "d'uh" of me.

Morea was kind enough to dig up the doodle thread and I posted my WW sketch there. (http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/showpost.php?p=357200&postcount=113) That little "zone baby" fun fact: I did it while on an "important" phone call that dragged on longer than my ADD allowed.

Morea, that is hot.

I've been the zones many times in the past. Unfortunately, it hardly ever happens now that I stopped smoking pot. I'll dig up some J-influenced pics later though!

lol you guys! My zoning out usually comes from being seriously overtired or having a tad bit too much wine. It really helps me to write better somehow.

Thanks bunches, buda! I am glad you liked it. :o
