Hey guys,
I'm new to the community but I was hoping to get some feedback on the logo that we purchased. A bit of background:
- We sell 1.5M+ Homes
- We are a new company
- We want to display quality and excellence in our logo
- We want to build a brand
I am of the opinion that the graphic design company that we used provided us with a sub par logo ... what do you think?
Please feel free to post your opinion and vote in the poll.
I want to share these comments with our Board of Directors so please, give me your God honest opinion. Cheers
Jayce

I like it.
It stands out, the 2 fonts contrast each other nicely. It will look great as 1, 2 or full colour. It looks like a brand name!
Were there any other versions or revisions, or did they give you just this?

This was everything they provided for the proof
Personal opinions aside, it's a good logo. Works well in black, it's a vector design and it captures the high end look.

I wouldn't have minded if they had shown 1 or 2 other alternatives for a first proof. Like explore a different colour scheme or even ask for your preferred colours.
But I think they took a confident stab, and it worked.
Are you allowed any revisions/changes? What don't you like about it?
Colours? Subtle layout change? Just remember when you show to the board of directors, that too many cooks spoil the broth!
Looking at it again, the two different fonts almost show both an old fashioned antiquity and new modern-style. Which relates to your industry.
What is your personal opinion?
I like it a lot.
I only said that because if some personally don't like it, it doesn't mean it's not a good logo. Personal opinion is very subjective while the technical requirements of a logo are for the most part set.

I'm not digging it whatsoever. Well I take that back - I like the color.
First and foremost, the lack of kerning on "homes" is making me sick to the stomach.
The Bellagio typeface, while trying to be elegant, comes off as sloppy to me, not up-scale. The adding of "HOMES" looks like an afterthought; rather than an integral part of the logo as it should be.
The business card is so-so. The horizontal emphasis (inherent in the typeface, but nonetheless) on the text, particularly on the title, "Managing Partner" looks slightly awkward. I personally feel like the top half of the card is too heavy - not digging the black bar.
All in all - it's not horrible. Whoever designed it has a great deal to learn about typography.

I like the wordmark. I am not 100% sold on the font used for "homes", but I do think it's a good logo overall.
The two fonts are a poor match. That's all I have to say for now...

I feel that the design is too flat ... too boring. It has no graphics and is simply two fonts thrown together. I also don't like how 'Homes' isn't aligned with Bellagio ... I had more of a graphical design in mind

a logo does not need a graphic to be effective... especially one that is trying to portray an "upscale" product. To me, a fine wordmark (when done properly)portrays an element of class. You don't want to put an image like a house in there, or it will likely be too literal and look clip-arty or cliche.

If this logo is important to your company (and of course I hope it is, but that is not always the bottom line case) they need to spend the money to develop an identity (much more than a logo and business card - building of a brand.)
If you're selling 1.5m and up homes, hopefully the company has the budget to hire a professional graphic design firm. This looks like the work of an undisciplined freelancer in my opinion.

I agree that the words should be aligned on the right. Did you tell your designer all this info (graphical/image based design) before they started?

I had nothing to do with the design process ... wish I did

I couldn't agree more. .
Did you show those samples to the designer BEFORE HE did the design? The design really isn't that horrible at all, not mind blowing but functional.
Two things here...
A. Either you have not communicated very well what you wanted to the designer
OR
B. Are cutting corners on $$$ on something you really shouldn't be, especially in your line of business.
Don't crap on the designer for it, go to a branding firm who specialize in this sort of thing.

I think its a good logo for what it is, and I agree with Kool and Mo.
however, i don't see what the big deal is with the kerning in "Homes" looks mighty spiffy to me, evenly spaced and everything. Probably not the best font choice, but like Kool said art is subjective, and everyone will have a different opinion on it.

... for what it's worth I like it. I think the colors are great and I like the fonts... nothing about the kerning popped out at me as being out of whack.

I think the Bellagio works, the home doesn't.

this logo is probabaly acceptable if you paid a freelancer or firm hourly, as those are two standard fonts and the logo likely took well under an hour to put together, even if they selected the fonts through trial and error. however, if you paid a standard logo flat fee and this is what they came back with, then i feel like they perhaps didn't provide all they could have creative service wise.
to me, simply using two fonts as your brand isn't the greatest way to make a logo, especially if they are fairly common and recognizable fonts. you can copyright that "logo" but you can't copyright the font, i'm not even sure you'll be able to stop someone from establishing a business with the same name and using the same font. personally, i tend to agree with you, the logo- and certainly the business card, do not make me think upscale homes.
i think screaming-trees is right. if you're selling upscale homes, then hopefully your business has the financial resources to take your identity design as seriously as it should. personally i'd lobby to pay the designer, thank them for their time, and do some research into another designer, perhaps someone who specializes in this type of thing. i agree with danger mouse as well to a point, there is a good chance that the vision for the logo was communicated poorly to the designer, but this doesn't strike me as the work of a truly professional designer, at least not the kind you should be hiring when you sell your product for millions of dollars at a time. It seems most likely that your company tried to cut some corners and let the cost of the designer influence their decision a little more than it should have.
overall i can't be too harsh on the design, i mean it functions and it isn't breaking any glaring design rules as far as that goes. it reminds me of something i might have done when i first started designing, i might have thought i was following all the guidelines and being a little clever in my design, but just didn't have the experience to know how to make something really unique and creative. some of the elements of good and interesting design are there, but the overall look just doesn't come together for me.
i would like to qualify my poll response though, in that i think the jumps between 2 and 3 are too big. if it were an option, my vote would have been 2.5 "i hope you didn't pay alot of money for that".
