Why do they have to lie? I’m talking about the people up top of things, they dangle a carrot on a stick, then seemingly just take it away. It’s almost as if that carrot was never even there. This is how I’m feeling right now regarding reviews. They were half baked here, we got performance reviews, then compensation reviews were to be made ‘separately.’

Well it’s been nearly three months, and the trade show season “crunch time” is fast approaching. A review I formally requested on my 1yr anniversary 5 months ago is only half complete. I perform well, I know my crap and I’m above expectation in job performance.

So why am I getting screwed so bad.

Anyway I am quickly approaching 3 years in the field and have a portfolio that shows it. I get excited about design and do well with interviews. I have been loyal for nearly 18 months, but now I need to start looking at the market. I can enjoy the luxury of choosing the employer rather than grabbing the first offer that comes along. When your green, that’s sometimes your only option.

Like poor clients, there are also poor jobs, it’s up to the individual to fight through to their next level. Fire your poorer and low quality high cost clients when you can…do the same for your sucky job. You’ll know when you ready.

Anyway this rant turned into some sick twisted advice column…I still ask though.

Why do they have to lie?

I don't know. I've been searching for a new job for quite sometime... on another note: Why do people interview you and seem VERY interested in hiring you ASAP only to not call you back, not answer your calls or return your voicemails...?

People get paid to make you believe there's a carrot there, when in fact there isn't. That's their job.
Same with interviewers. They're paid to have all their applicants leave with a positive feel, so that they don't go apply elsewhere right away.
Human resources once you're hired is another one. They'll make you think that they'll look into your situation, but the whole time they're talking to you and making you believe that changes are coming, they're saying to themselves, "My hands are tied, and there's not thing one I can do about it.".

We don't have a HR department. I always laugh when people call and ask to speak to the HR department...

you are lucky ... HR is the work of the devil ... they are nothing more than a place to guard the boss against unwanted conversations ;)

I'll defend the HR department-- but only the decent ones.

When you think about it, the HR VP should be second in command to the CEO-- not the CFO. I think Jack Welch, former CEO of GE said this. The people who choose the team should be among your top lineup. You need HR staff who are very smart, very perceptive, and with lots of ($$$) experience to do the proper job of selecting the most important investment to your future growth as a company. And that's the problem-- it's too often an under-skilled, under-experienced, and underpaid department to work in.

Drorian,

Why are you getting screwed badly? Because you're human. And as such, we are incredibly susceptible to unrealistic expectations when it comes to the relationship between our value as workers and the value we put into our work. Sometimes, we reach a point where our eyes tell our brains-- look, it was a nice try, but let's face it. This isn't gonna work. When you REALLY accept that, it's kind of like... like a gift to yourself. It frees you up to see new possibilities. They're there, and you'll find them. I'm sure.

I guess it's more an issue of survival right now, it's not that I feel entitled to wealth, but it's like Bosch's the Hay Cart

we all want a fair share, or simply to be allowed a certain ability to measure up. Whether or not you mean I should see the job isn't working, or the career isn't working, well you maybe right, but I'm not ready for burnout just yet. I enjoy what I do...I just want to be able to afford to do it.

So why am I getting screwed...I think it's mainly cause I'm told one thing, and shown another. As much as I'd like to continue to stay in one place, too grow there, I can't see it as being financially viable.

Now finding new possibilities, thats something I am actively looking for, but I suppose I need to be happy I have my health.

Damn, that sucks Dro, I got the carrot stick routine for a while till I said I wouldn't be coming in tomorrow if my pay was still the same, fortunately I had the advantage and the advantage to do that.

Maybe I can make you feel better, or at least so you know you are not the only one who gets screwed, cause we all do.

I'm about to start work on 3 huge projects for my employer that will bring in over 20K... I'll probably be paid less than 1/10th of that after completing everything.

Feel better?

^^ Try working on an account that is pushing a mil while getting paid 1.50 less than regional average for START OUT pay. I've been here over three years. I feel faint from the loss of blood due to the severe reaming I receive on a daily basis.

Our HR dept is pretty damn useless, too. Staff development? What's that? Pay tuition for a class at community college? Hell, no.

They tell me I can take their Adult Education classes (GED), though!
